Who: Tony and Maria Stark
Where: Maria's apartment
What: Tony needs to talk
When: Sunday afternoon
Rating: TBD
Open: No
Status: Ongoing
Tony had never been so thankful to have his mother around as he was at that moment. He needed to talk to somebody that wasn't just going to tell him to suck it up and deal with it, while at the same time wasn't going to coddle him and tell him that everything would be okay. He knew that his mom would be honest about her feelings, and in regard to what he needed to do.

He'd actually managed to avoid any anxiety attacks while on the island. Though they were something new. He remembered his time here, but he also remembered things from home that he hadn't known about when he came. And being younger as well, was really confusing him.

He left the tower and made his way to his mother's apartment, not even bothering with enough layers to cover up the reactor's glow since it was no longer there. He knocked on her door and shoved his hands in his pockets, rocking back and forth from heel to toe as he waited for her to answer.

"The suits need it, yeah, but I can find a way to power them without it actually being in my chest." He smiled. "Just build it into them."

"That's good." Maria beamed at him before turning around and heading back to the kitchen. "I'm glad you don't have to wear that thing in your chest anymore, I hated it."

"I was just about to mix up the cocoa. It might be a little silly, but I know I have a sweet tooth and I'm pretty sure you inherited it."

"Hot chocolate isn't silly." He chuckled and followed her into the kitchen. "Even when it's warm I still like it sometimes." He shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets again. It wasn't a stance he held often.

"So, how's your day been?" He smiled. While he did want to talk to her, he wanted to lead up to it, but he also knew his mother and she would probably get the subject back on him very shortly.

"My day's been nothing special. I worked a shift at the hospital and kept an eye on the few patients we had, other than that I haven't done much. I got home about a half hour before your email turned up, so that's all the news that's fit to print."

Tony laughed and shook his head. "I haven't heard anybody say that in a long time." He smiled and scratched at his chin. "Not since...." He bit his lip, clearing his throat. "A long time."

Maria tilted her head and looked at him curiously as she stirred the cocoa. "What, don't they have newspapers in the future?"

"They do but most of them are online." He shrugged. "And most people don't say anything about news being fit to print. Unless they're....you know....old." He grinned.

"I guess your dear old mother, who is younger than you," that was something she still had trouble wrapping her head around some days, but today was a good day "is just old fashioned."

He chuckled and smiled. "You are kind of old fashioned but it's nice." He nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. "And at least I'm only 7 years older than you now instead of 17, right?" He grinned. "And I'm only 17 years older than AJ instead of 27." He shook his head. "Lots of sevens."

"Seventeen is definitely better than twenty seven." Maria agreed. Now Tony was just barely old enough to be AJ's father instead of squarely in the bracket. It helped ease her own misgivings about their relationship somewhat, not that she would ever say anything to either part of the couple.

It wasn't her place, and she didn't have the decades of life behind her to give the moral authority it would have needed to make any impact.

She handed a mug of cocoa to her son and faced him squarely. "Ready to talk yet?"

Tony took the cocoa and took a sip, sighing a little. "Yeah, I think I can talk now." He nodded. "Knew it wouldn't stick to small talk for long." He chuckled and kissed her cheek.

"I've never been one to beat around the bush when someone I care about is in trouble." Maria corrected, taking a sip of her cocoa after accepting the kiss. She patted his cheek affectionately and leaned against the counter. "Why don't you tell me what's wrong sweetheart?"

He sipped his cocoa and sighed, looking into it for a few minutes. "I've been....having these....anxiety attacks." He cleared his throat. "Panic attacks that just come on....I mean there are some trigger words but lately it's just been happening whenever." He sipped the cocoa again.

Maria frowned. "Do you know what caused it? You were fine before you got younger." Fine being a relative term, still needing the 'nightlight' to survive notwithstanding.

He scratched the back of his neck, sighing a little. "It....some things happened in...well, you know that place where I grew up." He bit his lip. He couldn't even say the word New York without it triggering an attack.

"What sort of things Tony?" She noticed his reluctance to mention the name of the city but she knew perfectly well where he was talking about.

"I nearly died." He moved over to the table and took a seat. "There was....this....these aliens and they came through a wormhole and they tried to take over and ....there was a bomb...." He took slow, deep breaths trying to stay calm.
