Entry tags:blank, brynhild, jacob frye, scarlet, shepard, sophia peletier (oe), suzume

Who: OPEN
Where: Bryn's club
When: Evening, May 11th
What: Surprise party for Sophia!
Open: Yes
Rating: TBD

When Sophia first arrived at the club, she would find only Rawdon sitting with two champagne glasses and a bottle. She might notice the party decorations, but Rawdon would have left the lights off everywhere except just at the area he was occupying.

After initial greetings of 'happy birthday' and so on, Rawdon popped the cork on the champagne - and everyone else knew that that was their cue to leap out of their hiding places, for the club lights to switch on, the music to start, and everyone to shout "SURPRISE!"

"I tend to consider myself rather fetching most of the time." He said at her comment on his looks, still amused as he looked down over his outfit. He was clearly pleased with himself and her estimation of him, he'd liked the green for his Rooks and for bringing out the green in his eyes. Kenway had stared at him, trying to decide if he was impressed or annoyed by Jacob's manner and attire. Jacob had assured him that it was understandable that he be impressed, which he knew made up the other assassin's mind on how to feel about him and his fashion. He'd been more understanding when he had opened said coat to show him where his weapons could so easily be hidden, but it still didn't seem as if he appreciated Jacob's hats.

"I think I am not the only one here who can say that." He nodded to her dress. "Though I will admit when first we met I was shaking off the night before and was also confronted with all of this," he waved his gloved hand to indicate the station as a whole. "Perhaps I wasn't at my best then, but some sleep and a fine meal or two can improve even the hardest of adjustments. And, of course, your kindness has gone a very long way in making me and the captain feel incredibly welcome and comfortable, so thank you for that once again." He raised his glass to her before taking a drink.

Bryn glanced down at herself. "It is not my most flashy dress, but I didn't want to draw attention." She said with a shrug. Of course she knew she looked good, otherwise she wouldn't know that she could draw the eye. "But I will put your fretting to rest, I was distracted." She teased with a quirk to her lips. "Which is why I didn't notice just how lovely you are." It was her way of apologizing for how forward she might had seemed toward his companion.

But she offered him an honest smile, no cheek to be seen in the curve of her lips, when he thanked her. "You're quite welcome. I wish I could set you at ease about being in space, but to be honest I'm not that at ease with being here. Usually I spend as much time through doors as possible." But the current one... She didn't feel worthy of it. "Feet on the ground and what have you. Fortunately most doors are to different versions of Earth. Or Earth like places." It's where most of her 'skills' came to use.

"Ah, distracted. Yes, I believe you were very distracted. I am carrying my handkerchief should that distraction decide to join us and you find you need it." He lightly teased. He and Edward had discussed it, her and her interest, and he'd made a few suggestions that made the pirate smile but he'd left it to him to decide what he wanted to do in that situation. He was pleased to hear he wasn't just an also-ran, or that she was at least trying to be nice to him about not visibly drooling when he walked into a room. His pride hadn't been damaged enough by it yet that he had to prove anything, of course, if it continued...

Jacob nodded, "I have been avoiding windows since I arrived, space is still a bit too much for me. Kenway may have to find another first mate if he truly intends to sail off into space, given the option I think I would be happier on the station. I cannot begin to imagine how one would carry out space piracy and I would rather not find out in person." He pictured someone trying to swing from one ship to the other, only to die when exposed to space. That wasn't the way Jacob wanted to go. "But he and I have been through this door, if we're speaking of the same door. It certainly felt like being on Earth, at least physically. The ground felt as it should, the air even cleaner than it was back in Crawley. And more beautiful than any place I've ever seen, it was only knowing that we might miss this party and the chance to see you again that called us back to the station, otherwise we might have stayed much longer."

She had been told she had a type, not long ago, and she couldn't deny that was true when she was drool at first sight with Captain Kenway. Blonde men. They didn't have to be large, and overly muscled, as she would have thought. Considering the man she had married. And Edward was blonde man number three. Bryn snickered at his teasing.

Sliding closer she placed a hand on his shoulder. "I do not envy you. You would have to be sober for any trip he decided to take." Why admit that the pirate had managed to talk her into doing something she didn't think she'd ever do? "I have not been through the door yet. I will have to eventually, I know, because my daughter is getting married in Asgard, but it's hard to get over the feeling of being not worthy. And... most of the brew is made for men that are much heavier than you, or Edward. Probably even if you were both combined. I know Thor, for instance, weighed close to seven hundred pounds. And he is not overweight."

The look he gave her was more than a little incredulous but he didn't mind her touch at all. "It is strange, you grow up and have to sit through terribly dull lessons with tutors old enough to have been old men when your nan was a nipper but you come away from it with hopefully some understanding of what certain words mean. Then you are flung nearly a hundred and fifty years into the future and you discover that words don't mean what you thought any more. Like the word daughter, I always took that to mean one's female child, looking at you now I would have to guess she wasn't biologically yours as you seem far too young for any child of yours to be of marrying age. And of course, there is overweight, which I would say can be applied to anyone who happened to weigh that much. That doesn't even seem possible."

Said the master assassin of London, leader of a steer gang and now inhabitant of the future. He knew he didn't really have a leg to stand on but he was fairly sure he was entitled so some kind of shock.

"Also, don't say that to Edward, he would take that as a personal challenge and the man is already leaning toward dipsomania without trying to make a real effort." He did care about the wellbeing of his fellow assassin, but he mostly didn't want to be the one looking after him when he decided to drink too much."

"Lets address the easy issue first. With your tutors I'm going to assume you know something about density and mass and all that good science. His density is more due to the fact that Asgard's gravity pull is more than Earth's it's not noticeable just being there a few hours, but I imagine that if you stayed there an extended amount of time you would notice a soreness about your muscles." Of course that was just theory. "Or the station does something about the doors, or us for us to not notice differences like that. You'd have to ask one of the scientists, because I only read, I only know theory." Because when you lived as long as she had, you had to fill your time with something. "But I assure you, I won't tell Edward. Having his stomach pumped because of alcohol poisoning doesn't sound like a good time." For anyone involved.

Bryn took a deep breath. The flirtation and teasing gone from her tone, and her face. "Two of my daughters here are birthed from me. I have only one here now that has been adopted." With that said, she looked Jacob dead in the eye. "What do you know about... After life? Like the creatures and the like."

Jacob nodded a little at her explanation of Thor's weight, giving her an expression that seemed to say 'fair enough'. He hadn't considered all of that, though if he were being honest he would have to admit that he'd never had to consider any of that beyond the moment that his lessons had ended. And he'd never been a very good student to begin with, but he was at the very least proud of himself for understanding most of what she was saying.

And then there was the slightly stranger talk and he had to force himself not to roll his eyes, he kept them glued to hers to show that he was doing his best to take her seriously. "Charlie, Charles Dickens, inducted my sister and me into his little Ghost Club. We were supposedly looking for ghosts and other supernatural phenomena but we never found anything that would suggest that someone living wasn't responsible. Personally, I don't put much stock into myths and legends, of monsters and ghosts and all that, but it seems that people here would disagree with me. Someone has already told me about gods and angels and other beings here but it is hard for me to believe."

"Then I guess you don't have to sit down then?" She knew she probably shouldn't have put it like that. "First I want your word that you will not tell Captain Kenway. I want to tell him myself. Most things are not believable until you witness something that will force you to acknowledge it's true." She cut her gaze over at the little spectre standing at the bar, in her southern finest. But she wasn't just referring to Scarlet, she was referring to herself as well.

"Do I have your word?" She held her hand out to him, fully intent on a handshake. A man's word was his bond.

"I told you before, I'm your man, Madam. Even if that means keeping your secrets and not breathing a word to my roommate. What you do with or say to Kenway is your business and I do not go where I am not invited. You have my word and my silence. You may even have a secret in return if you want one in trade though mine are much more mundane and likely less interesting." Jacob said, taking her hand without hesitation. It was firm, as if reflecting the strength of his word without trying to make a show of whatever strength he had. It was considerable but he was still just a man.

He leaned in almost conspiratorially. He may not have believed in the supernatural but he loved a good story and he could sense that whatever she was about to tell him would be fascinating. His tone was playful at least, not at all mocking as she had been more than good to him and he honestly didn't wish to annoy her. "Go on then, you're secretly Venus in disguise, that would not surprise me one bit."

Bryn chuckled softly. It was hard to be so very serious with a man that oozed charm. She was content that he would stay quiet. "Well, it's hardly that. You have the wrong gods." She still wasn't quite sure how he would take what she had to say. After all, he had never witnessed anything paranormal, yet.

"I am a vampire. I was born human in the late eighth century, I lived twenty six years, before my Master made me. I was dying on a battlefield when I was given the choice, to live or to die a swifter death than I was. Everyone here knows, except my birthed daughters, Brenna, and Astrid. I am not sure what my grandson knows." Because she could not handle that sort of rejection, her daughters had been there years, without knowing what she truly was. "Do you need proof?"

He wasn't certain what he was actually expecting but this wasn't it at all. He leaned back just a little to look her up and down, like something about her would give away if she was simply playing with him or not. It did occur to him that all he really had to go on was the stories nan's friends used to tell to frighten him back in Crawley. And there was Varney the Vampire, he'd often gotten himself caught reading that instead of the Assassin histories and biographies. His father would get cross and take the book from him, only for Evie to slip it back to him the next night. Varney, while fictional, hadn't really been so bad, perhaps she was the same?

"You look incredible for a corpse. And the drooling is starting to make a little more sense." Was the first thing out of his mouth before he continued. "I spoke with Brenna on the network, she certainly writes like someone from around that time." He leaned back in again. "You don't seem mad so I am willing to believe you. But I may have to be very cross and change my mind about my word if I discover you have nefarious plans for Edward beyond the obvious. Have him, drink him, whatever he is comfortable with but please do not kill him. I would be obliged to seek justice for him should something happen to shorten his life, one of our rules, I'm certain you can understand."

She smiled at his reaction. It was far better than she'd hoped, at worst she could see him and Kenway as possible hunters. The definitely had the physic for it. Possibly the scars too. "I give you my word, as you have given yours, that my plans for Edward are not nefarious. I would not even drink from him if he did not want it. The drooling was... More from the smell of him. He smells of the sea, and the sun." And the look of him wasn't bad either. "In fact I would offer to lengthen his life if he should want it. But..." It wasn't something she advised. "Only if things were dire, and something else shortened his life."

But she would do the same for him. "I have to be honest, you're reaction is better than I had hoped. Do you have any questions? I am an open book." She gave him a little bit of a bow.

Jacob's eyes went distant for a moment. He didn't remember much of what Evie had gone on and on about when it came to the pirate, he did remember the story of his death though. It was odd enough to have the man's job over a hundred years later the man's time and having to see him every morning, but knowing how he died and what had become of his family. Jacob really wished he didn't, it was a secret he didn't like keeping but it was one he knew he had to.

Edward didn't need it in his head, every second of his fourteen remaining years would drive him mad. After all, if it truly was 2020 like they said, Jacob himself had likely been dead a long time and he didn't want to know how or why.

As quickly as his mind had wandered, Jacob was back again and he gave her an amused smile, "I have had to accept several insane things in the last few days, things wilder to me than a case of vampirism, at least that's something I've heard of. Just throw it on the pile. Why not? I knew something had to be different about you when you picked the Welshman. A Welshman, make sure that if there are any sheep aboard that they are locked up and well guarded." He shook his head lightly, clearly teasing. "I think my sense of reason may be broken, just a little. If it helps I may be shocked later when it really sinks in." He shrugged and took a drink before speaking again, "How do you stave off the boredom? Please tell me that it is more than smelling strange men."

Bryn was tempted to ask him where he went, but he hadn't drawn in on himself long at all. If she hadn't been paying attention she might have missed that distant gaze. The only thing that gave her away that she might have noticed was the concerned quirk of her eyebrows. But it was only the slightest movement.

She chuckled softly. "That wasn't jealousy I heard, was it?" The tease was easy. Simpler than delving into the deep stuff. They didn't know each other very well, yet. "If you're shocked later, you're welcome to send me any questions your shocked mind comes up with." She tugged her phone out of a little hidden pocket in the floof of the skirt, and wiggled it, before putting it back. "Well, I read a lot. I've been trying to teach myself how to understand the alien language, or how to speak it, but it... without having anyone here that knows it, knows what the words sound like spoken it's very difficult. I also work with wood." She said with a little cheeky grin. Let his mind stir that around a little bit.

"Why would I be jealous? I can have his attention whenever I want it, and I don't just mean when I'm lobbing oranges at his head to prevent the scurvy." Jacob made a face then gave her a wink. Maybe he was a little jealous, but he knew himself well enough that it was more about the attention rather than who was giving or not giving it. He'd perhaps gotten too used to being the boss in London, to having men tip their hats and ladies shoot him flirtatious glances when he passed. Relative anonymity might be good for him, might deflate his ego a little.

What a horrible thought.

"Clearly you've got your eye on some driftwood now it seems." His mind didn't need much stirring, it always went to the lowest places first. "I take it your condition explains why the smell of sun and sea are much more appealing than the smell of London and," he paused to consider himself a moment. If he smelled of the work he did she likely would have mentioned it, so much blood would have been strong in her nose. Everything else he came up with either wasn't pleasant or came back to blood. "Whatever else might be clinging to me. We all want what we can't have."

What could she say, she was amused by pervy humor. "Well, I was a shieldmaiden. We traveled by ship to most places we wanted to free of their riches. Does that not sound a little familiar?" She knew what it sounded like. "But I don't dislike your smell, I made my home in London for a little while. There is just a little heartache that goes with that, is all." And broken promises. "But I can go out in the sun, now, thanks to this little trinket." She held up her arm, and on it lay a simple bracelet.

"But I meant actual woodwork. Would you like to see? My apartment is just there." She pointed to the pair of doors just a few feet. They would have to be quiet, because there was an infant inside, but she didn't have a problem showing him.

"London certainly is the city of heartache, I wouldn't argue with you on that one." He'd been so light and naive when he first went to London and while the city had torn at his heart until it broke more than once he'd somehow managed to retain that light. Maybe some of that naivety too, though he liked to think it more assuming the best of people. He hadn't been wrong every time. "And that's quite the nifty little trinket then. If one of the doors allows it we'll have to get you and Kenway out on a boat."

Better on the water than in space, no matter what the Pirate tried to tell himself, even Jacob would know it wasn't the same.

He finished his drink before he answered, "Actual woodwork? Honestly, I'm intruged. If you can promise me we won't be gone so long as for me to miss my chance to pay my respects to the birthday girl, I would be honored to see what you've made."

"I have hopes that there will be another door. There was one to Tortuga, but it was a while ago. I did do a little bit of pirating. But I will say, going out on the ocean, and going out into space are two different things." Bryn actually shuddered. "The rapscallion has talked me into flying with him. I haven't ever taken an airplane, and I'm going to be getting in a spaceship." Because of promised stories. And gods knew what else.

Bryn stepped back and placed her hand against the pad that would open the doors. "Actual woodwork. What did you think I'd use a line like that to have you sneak off with me so that I could have my way with you?" She could hardly help the tease. "I would try to be a little more subtle than 'come into my apartment' I promise." She winked at him as she backed her way in through the doors.

As soon as he would walk in he'd find the area looking more like a Viking longhouse instead of an apartment on a space station. Down to the 'thatched roof' over head. There were modern aminaties too of course, she was spoiled by them after all. The room was one great room, with the kitchen exposed to the sitting area, with a couch made of wood, and furs, a chair that was much the same. The kitchen would only look like it was made of stone.

Jacob's brows went up at the notion of her flying with Edward, "Better you than I, I refuse and I will continue to refuse. If you see him carrying me off to a ship one day I would hope you would do the kind thing and put one or the other of us out of our misery."

He put his glass down where he could and then followed after her, "How kind of you. And while I may flirt and be the most charming man in this area of space, I promise you it takes more than a simple invitation to one's rooms to get into my trousers." Which wasn't truly a joke when it came to Jacob. He liked to flirt and for the most part, he was good at it until he wasn't, it made most assume that he was a little freer with himself than he actually was. It hadn't always been like that but having to keep a part of himself hidden away from everyone, even his twin, had taken a toll. "A man would have to be a fool not to be disappointed with that not being on the table though."

Any other words that might have come slowly faded away as he took a step inside and was struck by the interior. Not only was she a vampire with a hunger for pirates and excellent taste in brandy, but she was also a witch of some description. Or it was the technology. In any case, it was incredible and Jacob found himself staring slack-jawed. "Bloody hell."

"I don't know if I could do that, when one of you could woo me onto a ship with the line 'I have stories of Anne Bonny' and the other... well..." Bryn gave him a long once over. His shoulders were broad enough to fill out that coat, and she was sure that there was more to it than just the frill. "I think I like you too much for that. Besides if you do get coaxed on, and I took you out of your misery, who would I complain about charming driftwood to?" She was also sure that he could take her out, if he had the want. There weren't a whole lot of people she had that sense for.

She smiled at him though, and came up and patted his shoulder lightly, and with a slight chuckle. "Now would you like to change that? Or are you not quite impressed enough that I couldn't whisper in your ear..." She leaned in closer and whispered, "It's not completely off the table." Though she wasn't serious at all. If she felt that his flirty nature was more than just flirty, perhaps she would think it over more seriously.

"I am weak where capable women are concerned." He admitted quietly, feeling gooseflesh start to rise, and a pleasant chill race down his spine. He told himself it was because of what she was. She was a creature of legend that could kill him if she got a little too hungry, and they always went for the neck, didn't they? That was very Jacob though, facing down a whole city of templars and Blighters made him excited with not even a drop of fear, a woman like Bryn though, there came his nerves.

He felt like he did an admirable job of hiding them as he screwed a smirk on his lips and tried to keep himself looking confident, "Madam, if I wasn't certain that I wouldn't just be an aperitif, something to keep you warm for the man you intend to have later, I might take your closeness a little more seriously. You're welcome to my throat if it pleases you, anything more than that? Well, it's all a little too intimate for me just to be thrown over for Kenway in the morning."

"I was only teasing you. But I do thank you for the offer. I don't take from the throat though, that's dangerous. And me being as old as I am, I don't have to feed that often. And I did so just the week before you and Edward showed up. For reasons I don't understand, because I'm no scientist, the blood of enhanced humans can sustain me for a month, maybe longer." It had shocked her to the core that he'd offered to feed her. He was not only a flirt, but kind too. That in itself rang something deep inside her.

Bryn lightly bumped his shoulder with hers. "I would not throw you over for Kenway. But you deserve far better than me." Most did, that didn't mean she didn't want though. But before things could get to serious she grinned at him, before pulling away to a respectable distance. "And anyway, I said I would do more than invite you into my room if I wanted to seduce you. You are a man of London, you would be wined, and dined before I asked you to remove your trousers. I just didn't expect you to be that impressed with my craftsmanship. The only thing here that would be difficult for your average human to do is the thatch work." She pointed toward the ceiling.

The notion of different sorts of blood doing different things for her probably shouldn't have surprised him yet he found himself fascinated by the idea. If this place brought all sorts of people together she could likely have her pick of the best blood for her, she could be quite the gourmand and take different blood for different occasions. It was a wild thought and he would have to ask her about what she could do when he got his thoughts about it in order.

"I've said those words often enough myself," he admitted with a more genuine smile as he watched her move. "I have yet to find someone who actually listens. Maybe nobody wants what they actually deserve? No, that's too close to deep thought and that is to be avoided like the plague. And while I may have come from London I was not there long enough to completely blow the Crawley dirt off me, I promise I am not nearly as fancy as my taste in brandy suggests." He glanced down at his coat briefly then back up to the ceiling, "Alright, so perhaps I like fancy. Call it being appreciative of craftsmanship, it sounds better and it explains away why I might be so impressed by what you've been able to do with this place. I'd call it magic but I don't want to be disrespectful to the obvious skill and care that went into it."

"Oh, so when I do decide to seduce you, it doesn't all have to be all caviar and fine cuts of meat?" The teasing was to fun, especially since deep thoughts had threatened to darken things. Why not drag them back in the gutter, where it was light and teasingly flirty.

Bryn was tickled at the complement though. "Well, my services are free, if you want to change the inside of your apartment, or you want to learn, I can teach you. It takes time. But..." She shrugged. What else did she have if not time? "I did the inside of the little unnamed club too. Will do this one to, but I have to have a large amount of lumber that I like, because I want it to look like a Grand Hall." Like it had that one Halloween... That had been fun.

"I intend to make you work for it if you do, I was knighted by Queen Victoria herself. I ought to be a little harder to get, don't you think? Not very many of us left kicking around, I'm a limited edition." he teased right back. "As much as I like nice things, I am not so easily bought. It will take more than a nice meal, I can promise you that at least." Not that he would admit these days, but there were a few ways that were relatively quick shortcuts to his heart and body. It had taken him a long time not to wear them on his sleeve for all to see.

He finally looked back to her with a shake of his head, "I'm too impatient to learn, and practice isn't something I've concerned myself with for a very long time. But engaging you to make something that would make my space a little more like home isn't out of the realm of possibility. Though I would feel wrong to ask you to do any sort of work like that for me without recompense. Sadly, most of my skills are much more destructive than constructive."
