Who: Ashley and Mark
Where: Medbay
What: an interesting discovery
When: Tuesday morning
Rating: maybe some language
Open: to Fitz and Georgie (ALL THE DARCYS)
Status: Ongoing
Ashley decided to go into the medbay a little earlier than she usually did. She made sure to have breakfast ready before she went so that Fitz could eat when he wanted. She needed to make some notes on his file about the reaggravation of his back injury.

She wasn't at all surprised when she arrived and found Mark sitting in the office Henry set up for him. All of the patient files were in a cabinet along one wall and he had a desk with access to the medbay computer. Even though Lucas could have easily kept track of everything, Henry still liked the paper files. Because of this, there was always something that needed to be entered into the computer.

“Good morning, Mark.” Ashley said with a smile as she went over to the file cabinet. “How are you this fine morning?”

Ashley laughed softly. "Your secret is safe with me." She took the mug and went over to refill it, getting one for herself and coming back. She set his mug beside him.

"I'm afraid you're going to have some more notes to enter. My darling husband strained his back over the weekend." She sipped her coffee and went over to the patient file cabinet.

Mark laughed softly with her, and then got back to his typing as she went to sort them out with coffee. The clink of the mug against the desk prompted him to say an automatic 'thank you' without even looking at first.

Then she mentioned her husband, and he stopped for a second to glance over at her. "Oh. I'm sorry to hear that," he said with some sincerity. "Nothing too serious, I hope?" he asked, picking up the mug and taking a sip.

Ashley shook her head. "Not too bad, no. He's a bit sore but he's still mobile." She was thankful he hadn't made himself bedridden again.

"How's Bridget doing?" She asked as she searched through the files for her husband's.

"That's good," he nodded. "Bridget's well, thanks. Very well, actually," he responded. "Now she's past the sickness stage and into the 'oh my god why am I so fat?' stage," he joked a little, and the scrunched up his nose. "Not sure that's a pregnancy thing, or just a typical meltdown though, to be honest," he admitted, although there was definitely a fondness in his tone rather than a criticism.

Ashley chuckled. "It might be a Bridget thing." She didn't remember complaints like that from any of her family members. A quick glance at the cabinet and she pulled the file out. "Is she planning to have a baby shower?" She started to look through the file so she could add her notes and then frowned. The injury should have been in there.

"Yes, I think it might be," he laughed softly, and then took another sip of coffee as Ashley flicked through a file.

"Hmm. I don't know... I don't think so," he admitted. Shit, was he meant to be organising that? "She doesn't really know very many people here, so I'm not sure who would attend," he explained.

"I don't remember a lot of baby showers so I think it's okay if she doesn't have one. Nobody's expecting it, if that helps." Her tone was a little distracted as she looked through the file and then she giggled.

"Oh wow. I completely forgot that you're a Darcy too. I think I grabbed your file." She blushed as she started to close it and then stopped. "Your middle name is Fitzwilliam?"

"I'll ask her," he decided. "Just in case she is secretly hoping for one and not saying anything." It wouldn't surprise him if she did, but perhaps it would just make her miss all her friends from home.

"Oh. Yes, I'm a Darcy, too," he nodded. Hard to forget when Bridget so often called him by his full name, and not just Mark. He took a drink, and then nodded when she asked about the middle name. She always tended to refer to her husband either as 'my husband' or Mr Darcy, so he didn't really think about why she was asking beyond it being a bit of an odd middle name.

"Mmm, yes. Mark Fitzwilliam Darcy," he nodded. God, it was so bloody Etonian, Bridget was right. "Old family name that should've died a death a long time ago, but my father was excessively proud that he could trace the line all the way back to a Edgar Fitzwilliam who was the Duke of Matlock way back in the late 1700s," he explained casually. "It's somewhere in the Peak District," he added. Probably way more information that she really was interested in.

Ashley could handle his name being Fitzwilliam. It wasn't common but it wasn't super rare either. And then he explained where the name came from and she was sure a rather undignified noise came from her before she cleared her throat.

"Do you...um...do you know much about your family tree?" She slowly put the file back into the cabinet.

Mark quirked an eyebrow and gave her a curious sort of look at the sound. Literally no one outside his own family had ever found that remotely impressive. It was too many ‘greats’ to really mean anything.

“Yeah, a bit. My dad was into it for a while, especially after... Well they had this TV show back home where’re celebrities would trace their family history, and they’d find out they were related to... I don’t know, Shakespeare or something,” he explained. “So he watched that, and then became the libraries most dreaded customer I should imagine?” he joked a little, still not realising that she was actually interested in his own family tree.

Ashley nodded. "Yeah, the US copied that fir like 6 episodes but nobody cared." She cleared her throat again.

"But um...do you know names as far back as Edgar? Or was it just a few generations back?" Oh god how was she going to being this up? She realized she'd never used her husband's first name around Mark.

“Ah. Too much finding out they were all slave owners or something? It’s always awkward when it goes that way instead,” he grimaced a little. There was always a risk in looking back.

“Well, it was the Duke’s daughter who married a Darcy, I don’t remember her name, but I do remember that they squashed their two names together and named their first kid Fitzwilliam Darcy. And so it trickles down until I end up in the 21st Century with a slightly odd middle name.”

"Something like that." She nodded and cleared her throat again. This time she let out a little squeak before putting her hand over her mouth. This was all too strange.

"Um...Anne. Her name was Anne. And her husband's name was George." She picked up her coffee which was now thankfully cooled off enough that she could down the rest of the mug.

Again with the surprised noises. “You are the first person who ever been even vaguely interested, including my own mother,” he told her with a bit of a chuckle.

But then she said the strangest thing, and he frowned. “What? How on earth would you know that?”

Ashley cleared her throat once again. She took a deep breath and let it out so that she would talk rather than squeak.

"My husband is Fitzwilliam Darcy. Anne and George were his parents." She closed her eyes for a second before looking at Mark again. "I um....I guess this makes me your grandmother...."

“Is he? That’s funny,” Mark chuckled, not understanding what she meant at first. It just seemed too ridiculous when they were both clearly alive at the same time, and her husband was presumably younger than him.

And then she clarified. “What? Is he from the 1800s though?” he pointed out.

Ashley pulled out her phone and sent two texts very quickly before nodding in answer to Mark's question. "He was born in 1784." She bit her lip. This was actually insane.

Mark was looking at her like she was slightly mad, his mind working into overdrive as he tried to catch up with all of this new information. This place was so crazy that when people mentioned the timelines, or that they were fictional characters, he rather smiled and nodded and stored it in the 'crazy bag of crap' section of his brain. The bag was burst open.

"Wait, sorry, you mean the Mr Darcy who is The Mr Darcy?" he asked. He hadn't even clicked that his name was Fitzwilliam, it wasn't a book he had ever read cover to cover. Bridget had made him endure the 100 hour Colin Firth marathon, but he clearly hadn't been paying enough attention. "Pride and Prejudice exists in my world, so I don't think that can be possible," he told her.

"Yes. The Mr Darcy." Ashley started to pace and chew on her thumbnail. She would answer the occasional text as she did.

"But all the names match up...and the timeline..." She answered one more text and then looked at Mark. "There's a really quick way to solve this. Miguel can just run a DNA test. He can tell if my husband is your whatever number of greats grandfather." She put her phone away. "It would kind if make sense, though. I mean you look so much alike..."

While she was texting her husband, Mark was occasionally texting Bridget about it all, and it was through explaining it to her that he realised something.

"Ah. Yeah, now I think about it, that's probably because I'm also fictional in at least one world that I know of, too," he explained, and then laughed a little at how bloody weird that sounded.

It didn't take him long to consider the DNA test, and he quickly gave her a nod of consent. "Yes, sure, that could be interesting if nothing else," he agreed - but then he was frowning. "Do we? Look alike?" he asked. He hadn't actually met the man, but he'd never pictured them as looking alike. For one thing, her Darcy was some sort of romantic hero. He was... not.

Ashley went over to another file cabinet and pulled out a few forms. "You'll need to fill these out so Miguel has permission to take the samples and stuff." She ran her fingers through her hair. This was really weird.

Ashley pulled out her phone and had to scroll through until she found a picture of her husband that she could actually show someone else before handing her phone to Mark.
