Mrs Reynolds had done a fantastic job in getting everything set up in such a short time. The ballroom had been decorated with whatever flowers she could find. Most of them coming from the estate itself. The new Mrs Darcy had been rather okay with whatever Mrs Reynolds could find, rather than fussing over specific things. It was refreshing.

There was a full orchestra off in one corner. Mr Darcy had insisted on sneaking them in so that it could be a surprise for Ashley, but that hadn't been easy to do. They'd managed it, though, and everyone was getting set up while Mrs Reynolds put the finishing touches on the room. There were chairs everywhere in case someone wanted to sit while they ate. There were buffet tables all around the room as well with various meats and pies and pastries. Anything that anyone could want. As well as a few with punch and glasses to drink from. And Mrs Walker had done a lovely job on the wedding cake with all the sugar flowers and decorating. It was just lovely.

Mrs Reynolds had to dab at her eyes a bit as she moved around the room to make sure everything was perfect. She was so happy that Mr Darcy found someone that made him smile the way he used to before his father died. It was lovely to see that light in him again. And it was obvious to her that this wasn't just a marriage of convenience. They really did love each other. Once everything was ready, she opened the ballroom doors wide and propped them open for the guests. One of the maids commented about wondering where the happy couple had gotten off to rather than being there to greet the guests as they entered and Mrs Reynolds just smirked and sent the girl back to her tasks. Definitely not a marriage of convenience.

She wanted to kiss him but she knew that wasn't acceptable in public, even now that they were married. So instead she settled for squeezing his arm. It really was wonderful. Everything had come together perfectly and she even loved the cake. She'd given Isabel a little free reign on the design.

"So, Mr Darcy, whom shall we speak to first?" She chuckled. She'd spotted her mother in the lovely dress that she'd picked for her. It was a good color and Ashley was thankful to see a good fit. She needed a little time to muster up some courage before going over, though. There was a lot to apologize for.

Darcy looked about the room, smiling a little at the crowd of familiar faces. Such short notice, and yet they had a lovely turn out.

“That depends. Do you want to start with someone you already know, or dive straight into introductions?” he asked her.

Ashley thought about it for a moment. "Let's dive straight into introductions. I want to meet your family." She smiled and squeezed his arm again.

Darcy smiled and gave her arm a squeeze in return before he started pointing people out to her. There weren’t too many members of his family present - he was very aware for a moment that his parents were gone. And then there was Lady Catherine and Cousin Anne who hadn’t even been invited. But the people he truly cared for had turned up.

“... Colonel Fitzwilliam is there talking with Rawdon Crawley, in their matching jackets,” he teased lightly. His cousin rarely took the damn thing off, but he supposed a little pride wasn’t a bad thing. “And his brother is over there, and... well, that is their father seated there, in the blue jacket,” he explained. He was surprised the Earl had made it, and he did look rather old and a little tired.

Ashley nodded as he pointed people out. She giggled at his joke about the matching jackets though she had to admit it was a nice look on both men.

"And the Earl is your uncle?" She tried to remember. She hadn't really been paying that much attention to that part of the book.

“Yes, that’s right,” Darcy gave her a nod. “He’s my mother’s brother, and he is the Earl of Matlock. He’s always referred to as such, even by his family, at least in public,” he explained softly, a crash course in peerage titles for the American. “You should call him ‘my lord’ rather than ‘sir’ in conversation,” he explained. He was sure his uncle would forgive a slip up, but he knew she would want to get it right. “He’s really not so scary as that might sound,” he chuckled.

Ashley nodded again. My Lord, she could handle that. Easy. She looked up at her husband, a little worried she might mess it up.

"He's nice? Nothing like his sister?" She was, of course, referring to Lady Catherine. And she knew the titles still mattered but she didn't want to embarrass him.

“Oh, yes, he’s a nice man,” Darcy nodded, giving her a smile and another reassuring squeeze of her arm. “Do not look so worried, my love. I will introduce you, give him a little curtsy and say ‘pleased to meet you,my lord” or something like that,” he explained.

Ashley blushed a little and smiled at him. The people that were here were the people that he liked. Normally she wouldn't care what anyone thought but tonight was a bit different. She wanted to make a good impression.

"I can do that." She nodded.

“Of course you can,” he nodded. She wanted to do her best for him, she was eager to get it right and be respectful, and he appreciated that. He could easily forgive a faux pas when he knew that she actually cared.

With her arm on his, he walked with her across to where the Earl was sitting. His children had clearly positioned him well so that he could observe the dance floor as well as having easy access to food and drinks. Darcy knew that the walking stick leaning by his chair was not just for show.

“Hello, uncle,” Darcy started, and the old man’s expression softened into a smile as he looked up. “May I introduce my wife, Mrs Ashley Darcy,” he started, feeling a bit of a thrill as he said it for the first time to someone else. “Mrs Darcy, this is my uncle, the Earl of Matlock.”

It was amazing, the feeling she got from being introduced as his wife. The smile on her face was nothing but genuine. She gave a little curtsey.

"Pleased to meet you, my lord." She wasn't quite as nervous as before walking over. Of course having her husband by her side was helping a great deal.

"Ah, I think in this case, the pleasure is all mine, Mrs Darcy," the Earl responded, and Darcy placed a hand on his shoulder as he moved to try to get up and greet them properly.

"Please, do not trouble yourself, my lord," he said gently, not wanting him to struggle on their behalf. "We are so glad that you could make it, I know that it was terribly short notice."

"I wouldn't have missed it for the world," his uncle said to the pair of them.

"You're too kind, my lord." Ashley curtsied again. She was mentally cursing her pale skin for showing the slight blush that appeared on her cheeks. "And if there is anything that you need, please don't hesitate to let us know."

Darcy couldn't help but beam with pride at his new wife. He knew that it was such an alien environment for her, and she'd really taken everything in her stride. And the Earl had definitely noticed the blushes and smiles and how they were every bit the newlyweds. This definitely wasn't a money and status thing, and he was glad for his nephew.

"I'm very nicely set up here, thank you. It is pleasant to see this old ballroom so full of life," he commented, thinking of his younger years when his sister had been alive. "Your mother would have loved to see it," he added after a moment, and Darcy was quite surprised at the rush of emotion he felt at such a simple remark. It often worried him, given his aunt's remarks.

"Will you be staying with us, my lord?" Ashley asked. "The staff have prepared a few rooms for those that might not wish to travel so late." She squeezed Darcy's arm a bit. She was trying to help.

Once again he was grateful to her, and he could only hope that she felt he was half as good for her as he knew she was for him.

"That is very kind of you both, and perhaps I might. I would not wish to have my boys rush off early on my account, and I'm sure to tire long before them," he admitted with a smile.

"Well, you are very welcome," Darcy gave him a little bow, not missing the way the older man was just beaming with pride at the pair of them now. They could definitely could that as a success. "We should continue on our introductions, but I'm sure we will speak again before you retire."

Ashley gave another curtsey. "We will most definitely speak to you again. I look forward to any stories you might have of my dear husband as a child." She grinned, giving Darcy a wink.

The Earl gave a low chuckle and nodded at her. “Oh, I certainly have plenty of those,” he told her, giving Darcy a mischievous look. “Go, mingle, enjoy yourselves. Welcome to the family, my dear,” he told Ashley.

Darcy guided her her away, and then picked up a couple of glasses of white wine off a tray held by a passing server. He figured she wouldn’t want to risk red in her nice dress.

“See, you’re wonderful. I’m thankful this is not really the other way around, I crumble under the pressure,” he only half joked as he passed her a glass.

"Thank you, my lord." She smiled at him. As they walked away she relaxed a bit more. Taking the glass of wine, she took a drink and chuckled.

"I'm just much better at hiding it, my love." She sighed.

“Ah, then perhaps one day you will be able to teach me,” he smiled fondly, taking a sip of wine himself. “But you’ll be glad to hear that you’ve survived the most tricky interaction already,” he told her. There were just the cousins, and a couple of untitled people from his father’s side.

"I will do my best." She smiled. She really wanted to kiss him but that would have to wait. Ashley looked around the room for a moment.

"That's good. Smooth sailing from here, huh?" She sipped her wine and looked up at him, speaking softly. "Though perhaps before we make any more introductions we could...find reason to duck out just for a moment?"

"Yes, I should say so," he nodded. He couldn't necessarily say the same about her side of the family, but so far so good on that front. He'd been beyond relieved to see that Shepard really had made it through.

"I'm sure we could, yes... there must be some lat minute thing we simply forgot to communicate to the kitchen. How forgetful of us," he joked.

Ashley nodded and downed the rest of her wine. "And it's a very important detail. Must be communicated right away." She cleared her throat.
