Who: Kelan and Open
Where: Station, heading towards the food court
What: New arrival
When: today
Open: Yes

It was the quiet that woke Kelan.

Normally, the shelter had something going on, someone yelling or a child crying or a fight, and the Factory was always loud. Absolute silence like this was unknown to him, and his ears rang to try and make up for the sudden lack of sound. It would be impossible for him to get back to sleep now, and he carefully opened his eyes to see what was going on. What he saw startled a yell out of him, and he sat up so quickly that the wounds on his back tore yet again. But he couldn't think about that right now as he stared all round him at the chapel he found himself in, one devoted to his Gods.

His hand flew to the necklace he wore as prayers tumbled from his lips, and he carefully got to his feet as he grabbed at his blanket with his free hand. This was like no other chapel he'd ever been in, all sleek lines and beautiful imagery, but given that the last time he'd been in one he'd been a small child, that didn't really mean much. Five walls surrounded him, and in the center of the room there was an altar, also five-sided. The walls came to a point above the center of the altar, and the low lighting created flickers of runes and half-glimpsed faces as he slowly made his way round the altar. A prayer for each God and a request for their blessings (and an apology for having no offerings for them yet again) was muttered as he faced each side of the altar. He managed all the prayers before he had to stop and cough, a hacking wet cough that made his ribs ache and did his back no favors either.

[I don't know where I am,] he said softly once he had his breath back, addressing all five of his Gods, [but I woke in Your house, wherever this is. I would ask for Your protection and Your guidance no matter what happens after this, and I thank You for this wonderful moment of peace.] Stepping close to the altar, he let his hand rest on it like he vaguely remembered his father doing, and then backed away towards the small door behind him.

The door opened into another room, which lay empty. The chairs were a mess, though; some of them were broken, others lay in piles on the floor, and there were small piles of broken glass everywhere. Kelan pulled his blanket tightly round himself as he walked through the room and out into the corridor. He stopped to lean on the wall and catch his breath after another coughing fit, and wondered where he was.

There were signs on the walls telling him what level he was on, and where the stores were and one wall was giving directions to a processing plant and explaining what to do in case of emergencies, and all sorts of information. This was all well and good, but... where were the people? He walked a bit further, letting his hand trail along the wall, and stopped when he saw the sign for all the canteens and restaurants. Maybe he could eat? His stomach growled at the idea, and he quickly decided to head in that direction. Hopefully, the food supplies would be there even if there were no people.

His breathing was starting to get really loud as he continued to walk, wheezing in his chest, and it seemed magnified in the quietness that surrounded him. He had so many questions about what had happened, but he deliberately clamped down on his thoughts as he slowly made his way towards the potential food. It wouldn't do to get excited at the thought of food to eat and maybe a shower or even a bath (Kelan was more than aware of how filthy he must look against the clean walls of wherever he was) only to discover that all the supplies were gone and he was trapped. He'd see what the food supply was like, and then he'd allow himself to think about what he was going to do.

"Not just Sullys. Lots of people." She nodded. She went over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "You worked in the factory?" She sighed a little. She'd have to ask about that. Ashley put a hand on his chest.

"We need to take you to the doctor."

He couldn't help but flinch when she touched him. A new habit he'd picked up thanks to the overseer's displeasure with his behavior of late. His heart thudded in his chest as he backed into the wall and braced for... nothing. Huh. His panic made him try to take deeper breaths in case he needed to run, but that just set off his wheezing even more, and then he coughed. And coughed, and couldn't stop for a minute or so. His chest ached, he'd pulled at his back again, and his head was spinning, but he knew what Ashlee was offering. 'Doctor' was one of the first words Sookie and Tom had asked for because of Izzy carrying her little ones.

"Doctor," he breathed out, and then slumped forward.

Ashley quickly slipped an arm around Kenal, offering her shoulder for support. At least he wasn't against going to the medbay. "Can you walk?" She asked, using her free hand to mimic walking with her fingers.

Spots swam in front of Kelan's eyes as he struggled to stay aware and mostly awake. Ashlee's arm across his back was sore, yes, but at least it gave him something to focus on.

"...walk," he repeated, and fought to draw breath while he watched Ashlee's fingers until he realized what she was asking. "Walk doctor." His legs felt like there were weights hanging off them, and he had no idea where to go, but he took a step forward.

It was going to be a very slow walk to the medbay, Ashley realized after just a few steps. There had to be a faster way. Fortunately the lift wasn't that far so she was able to get him there.

"Henry will get you all fixed up, okay?"

Kelan didn't reply. His awareness was gradually narrowing down to the ground immediately in front of his feet, and every breath was a struggle. He knew the signs, he knew he was about to pass out, but he had to let Ashlee know somehow.

As soon as they seemed to have stopped moving, he pulled all his remaining energy together. "Ashlee..." he managed, his voice barely louder than his wheezing, "...sleeps" and then he slumped against her once more, but this time he was unconscious.

"Sleeps?" She asked and her question was immediately answered with him passing out. "Shit." She nearly dropped him but managed to keep him up. "Great. Okay..." She knew she was talking to herself. Ashley suddenly wished they had an AI on the station so she could just let the medbay know she was coming without needing her phone.

While she was fit, she'd never had to carry an unconscious person before so getting to the medbay was going to be interesting. When the lift stopped, she slowly dragged Kelan along, carrying him as best she could.

He had no sense of moving while he was out cold. No idea that Ashlee was moving him towards this doctor person. He was simply dead weight for a number of minutes.

His hearing was the first thing to come back, as always. Not that the noises meant anything to him just yet, and he was nowhere near being able to react.

Ashley actually managed to get him in the medbay door and over to a chair before she couldn't hold him anymore.

Henry practically ran over to the two of them and started checking his pulse. The rattle in his chest was very evident.

Ashley ran her fingers through her hair. "I don't know what's wrong. He was coughing pretty bad when I came across him. He speaks very little English. I know his name is Kelan." She started to pace.

Henry nodded as she spoke. "Help me get him on the gurney." He rolled a bed over and the two of them got Kelan onto the gurney, rolling him over to get his vitals. "Lucas, I need a full scan."

"Right away, Henry." The AI said.

He heard his name, just as he started to be aware of hands touching him and moving him around. Not like he was used to, though. These were careful hands, not trying to hurt him or simply get him out of the way. He blinked, but wasn't up to looking round him just yet so his eyes stayed shut after the first blink.

This was very different to most of the other times he came round, he thought absently, and then he remembered what was going on; the chapel, the clean place that must have been the Sully clan's home, and Ashlee, helping him to the doctor.

[Is this the doctor?] he muttered, before opening his eyes and turning his head a little to look for Ashlee. Then he remembered that he needed to speak Sookie's language. "Doctor?" he asked, and then coughed.

Henry sighed heavily when he looked over the read outside after the scan. Kelan was going to need a lot of work. "Ashley, I am officially recruiting you as nurse." He then started to look over the readouts more thoroughly.

Ashley nodded and smiled a little when she heard Kelan speak. "Yes, this is the doctor. His name is Henry. He's going to take care of you."

Kelan was too tired to try and work out all that Ashlee had said. But this was the doctor, and he was lying on something comfortable, so that was all good. His eyes slid shut, but from tiredness this time rather than going unconscious.

"Thank," he said after a moment.

Henry nodded and started gathering up supplies. The first thing he did was get a bowl with some water and a cloth. He brought it over to Ashley.

"I need you to clean him up as much as possible, okay?" He handed everything over and she nodded.

"I can do that." Ashley nodded and started to clean off what she could without actually undressing Kelan. "What's wrong with him?" She asked.

"A variety of things. He's dehydrated, malnourished, has an infection and has what we used to affectionately call the black lung." He shook his head. "He's going to be here for quite some time."

At the first touch of something wet against his skin, Kelan's eyes flew open and he pulled back. But then he realized what Ashlee was trying to do. [Do you want me to sit up?] he asked, before slowly trying to push himself up into a sitting position anyway. His head still spun, but he was used to getting back up and going straight back to work after his collapses. Sitting on a bed was easy.

It was his first time getting a look at the doctor. Kelan watched him as he shrugged off his blanket, and then while he took off his overcoat. His undershirt was just as grimy as the rest of his clothes, and it was stuck to the wounds on his back. "Doctor," he said, still watching the man.

Ashley didn't understand what he was asking until he started to sit up. "It's okay." She said as she gently pushed for him to lie back down. "We'll worry about that in a moment. Just relax."

Kelan knew the word 'okay', but nothing else made sense because he was still watching the doctor. He looked round as Ashlee pushed him back down. Twisting round as he lay back down, he lay on his side. Now that his overcoat was off, there was very little protection for his back.

Ashley continued to clean what she could. She wasn't sure if she was ready to give a full sponge bath. After the water turned brown, she went to get some clean water.

Henry sighed again as he saw the state of Kelan's back. He needed to get the shirt off but was afraid of hurting him. It was obvious the material was sticking to the wounds.

"Kelan, I am going to cut your shirt." He made a scissor motion with his fingers and pulled on his own shirt. "I need to get to your back." He lightly touched a spot on Kelan's back that wasn't hurt. "Okay?"

Looking round at the sound of his name, Kelan watched what the doctor was miming. Working it out quickly, he replied with a quick "Okay," and then screwed his eyes shut tight as he braced himself. The doctors in the Factory were not gentle.

Henry got a pair of scissors and as carefully as he could cut the shirt around Kelan's wounds. When he was done he pulled away the part that wasn't stuck so that he could concentrate on getting the rest off.

When Ashley came back with a fresh bowl of water, he looked at her. "I need to get something from the medicine supplies."

"Okay." Ashley smiled. She continued to wash Kelan carefully. "Henry is a very good doctor." She was pretty sure she already said that but it bore repeating.

Henry came back with a large bottle of a green liquid. "This is going to sting a bit." He put on some gloves and then gently poured the antiseptic over Kelan's back in the Hope's of loosening the shirt.

Kelan didn't move or make a sound despite the pain. His breathing was loud and wheezy and too quick to be normal, but it was the only indicator that there might be something wrong. He knew better than to react otherwise.

Henry used the entire bottle to sufficiently soak the fabric. He heard the change in Kelan's breathing and silently muttered an apology.

Ashley stopped what she was doing and took one of Kelan's hands, squeezing gently. "You can squeeze my hand if it hurts, okay?" She offered him a smile.

Okay, that was different. He risked actually taking hold of Ashlee's hand, before his lips started moving as he silently ran through a prayer of healing and protection. Perhaps he wouldn't be punished after all.

Ashley reached up with her other hand and gently smoothed his hair. She wanted to help him be as calm as possible. "You're safe here." She smiled again.

Henry looked up at Ashley. "I need you to hold him still while I take this off." He sighed and when Ashley nodded, he started to very carefully try to peel the fabric away from the cuts.

Some of the fabric came away easily, the liquid having soaked in and softened the scabs and wounds enough that they gave easily. There were a few points where the fabric refused to budge without the doctor pulling hard, though. Kelan continued to run through his prayer and again, the only indication of anything bothering him was when his breathing hitched or sped up.

The wheezing didn't help his lungs, though, and he ended up coughing hard just as the doctor was trying to work at one of the more stubborn parts of the fabric. The scab broke as the fabric pulled free, and fresh blood seeped down Kelan's back and onto the clothing below him.

Ashley kept a hold on Kelan's hand and started humming softly, trying to help.

As soon as the fabric was completely off, Henry looked at the cuts. They were definitely infected. "This is going to take a bit more work than I thought."

"What's wrong?" Ashley tried to lean over to look.

"I'm going to have to remove some infected tissue." He sighed.
