Who: Kelan and Open
Where: Station, heading towards the food court
What: New arrival
When: today
Open: Yes

It was the quiet that woke Kelan.

Normally, the shelter had something going on, someone yelling or a child crying or a fight, and the Factory was always loud. Absolute silence like this was unknown to him, and his ears rang to try and make up for the sudden lack of sound. It would be impossible for him to get back to sleep now, and he carefully opened his eyes to see what was going on. What he saw startled a yell out of him, and he sat up so quickly that the wounds on his back tore yet again. But he couldn't think about that right now as he stared all round him at the chapel he found himself in, one devoted to his Gods.

His hand flew to the necklace he wore as prayers tumbled from his lips, and he carefully got to his feet as he grabbed at his blanket with his free hand. This was like no other chapel he'd ever been in, all sleek lines and beautiful imagery, but given that the last time he'd been in one he'd been a small child, that didn't really mean much. Five walls surrounded him, and in the center of the room there was an altar, also five-sided. The walls came to a point above the center of the altar, and the low lighting created flickers of runes and half-glimpsed faces as he slowly made his way round the altar. A prayer for each God and a request for their blessings (and an apology for having no offerings for them yet again) was muttered as he faced each side of the altar. He managed all the prayers before he had to stop and cough, a hacking wet cough that made his ribs ache and did his back no favors either.

[I don't know where I am,] he said softly once he had his breath back, addressing all five of his Gods, [but I woke in Your house, wherever this is. I would ask for Your protection and Your guidance no matter what happens after this, and I thank You for this wonderful moment of peace.] Stepping close to the altar, he let his hand rest on it like he vaguely remembered his father doing, and then backed away towards the small door behind him.

The door opened into another room, which lay empty. The chairs were a mess, though; some of them were broken, others lay in piles on the floor, and there were small piles of broken glass everywhere. Kelan pulled his blanket tightly round himself as he walked through the room and out into the corridor. He stopped to lean on the wall and catch his breath after another coughing fit, and wondered where he was.

There were signs on the walls telling him what level he was on, and where the stores were and one wall was giving directions to a processing plant and explaining what to do in case of emergencies, and all sorts of information. This was all well and good, but... where were the people? He walked a bit further, letting his hand trail along the wall, and stopped when he saw the sign for all the canteens and restaurants. Maybe he could eat? His stomach growled at the idea, and he quickly decided to head in that direction. Hopefully, the food supplies would be there even if there were no people.

His breathing was starting to get really loud as he continued to walk, wheezing in his chest, and it seemed magnified in the quietness that surrounded him. He had so many questions about what had happened, but he deliberately clamped down on his thoughts as he slowly made his way towards the potential food. It wouldn't do to get excited at the thought of food to eat and maybe a shower or even a bath (Kelan was more than aware of how filthy he must look against the clean walls of wherever he was) only to discover that all the supplies were gone and he was trapped. He'd see what the food supply was like, and then he'd allow himself to think about what he was going to do.

Ashley continued to clean what she could. She wasn't sure if she was ready to give a full sponge bath. After the water turned brown, she went to get some clean water.

Henry sighed again as he saw the state of Kelan's back. He needed to get the shirt off but was afraid of hurting him. It was obvious the material was sticking to the wounds.

"Kelan, I am going to cut your shirt." He made a scissor motion with his fingers and pulled on his own shirt. "I need to get to your back." He lightly touched a spot on Kelan's back that wasn't hurt. "Okay?"

Looking round at the sound of his name, Kelan watched what the doctor was miming. Working it out quickly, he replied with a quick "Okay," and then screwed his eyes shut tight as he braced himself. The doctors in the Factory were not gentle.

Henry got a pair of scissors and as carefully as he could cut the shirt around Kelan's wounds. When he was done he pulled away the part that wasn't stuck so that he could concentrate on getting the rest off.

When Ashley came back with a fresh bowl of water, he looked at her. "I need to get something from the medicine supplies."

"Okay." Ashley smiled. She continued to wash Kelan carefully. "Henry is a very good doctor." She was pretty sure she already said that but it bore repeating.

Henry came back with a large bottle of a green liquid. "This is going to sting a bit." He put on some gloves and then gently poured the antiseptic over Kelan's back in the Hope's of loosening the shirt.

Kelan didn't move or make a sound despite the pain. His breathing was loud and wheezy and too quick to be normal, but it was the only indicator that there might be something wrong. He knew better than to react otherwise.

Henry used the entire bottle to sufficiently soak the fabric. He heard the change in Kelan's breathing and silently muttered an apology.

Ashley stopped what she was doing and took one of Kelan's hands, squeezing gently. "You can squeeze my hand if it hurts, okay?" She offered him a smile.

Okay, that was different. He risked actually taking hold of Ashlee's hand, before his lips started moving as he silently ran through a prayer of healing and protection. Perhaps he wouldn't be punished after all.

Ashley reached up with her other hand and gently smoothed his hair. She wanted to help him be as calm as possible. "You're safe here." She smiled again.

Henry looked up at Ashley. "I need you to hold him still while I take this off." He sighed and when Ashley nodded, he started to very carefully try to peel the fabric away from the cuts.

Some of the fabric came away easily, the liquid having soaked in and softened the scabs and wounds enough that they gave easily. There were a few points where the fabric refused to budge without the doctor pulling hard, though. Kelan continued to run through his prayer and again, the only indication of anything bothering him was when his breathing hitched or sped up.

The wheezing didn't help his lungs, though, and he ended up coughing hard just as the doctor was trying to work at one of the more stubborn parts of the fabric. The scab broke as the fabric pulled free, and fresh blood seeped down Kelan's back and onto the clothing below him.

Ashley kept a hold on Kelan's hand and started humming softly, trying to help.

As soon as the fabric was completely off, Henry looked at the cuts. They were definitely infected. "This is going to take a bit more work than I thought."

"What's wrong?" Ashley tried to lean over to look.

"I'm going to have to remove some infected tissue." He sighed.

Kelan didn't know what was being said, but he knew enough to listen to how the words were being said. And he already knew his back was bad, since he could feel the bleeding. So this couldn't be good news, not really.

"Ashlee?" he asked, before clearing his throat. "Okay?"

Ashley smiled again but this time it didn't reach her eyes. There was worry there instead. She nodded, though, and kept hold of his hand. "You're okay."

Henry went to another station and grabbed a small vial and a syringe. "I'm going to give him a local anesthetic to help. I can't risk putting him completely under with his lungs in that condition."

Ashley nodded again. "Doctor helps." She said to Kelan, hoping he understood that at least.

"Doctor helps," he repeated, and nodded to himself. He vaguely remembered 'help' from the words Sookie and Tom had taught him. He flinched a little at the small pin-pricks on his back, but soon enough he felt nothing. There was the odd tug or gentle push, but other than that, nothing.

He didn't even bother trying to listen to whatever the doctor or Ashlee were talking about, he just enjoyed the lack of pain from his back. This was the first time in months that it didn't hurt.

Occasionally during the process, Ashley would have to help Henry a bit. It wasn't as bad as she thought and she started to consider maybe being a nurse.

Henry had to irrigate the wounds a bit, but once he was satisfied the infection was cleared out, he stitched the ones that needed it and then bandaged them up. The tricky part was going to be explaining the after care to someone who didn't speak English.

Henry and Ashley talked for a few moments and then Ashley looked at Kelan. "The doctor is going to give you medicine, okay?" She prayed he understood medicine.

Kelan understood the important parts. "Midsin, okay," he said with a nod, and then coughed. Maybe there would be something to help with his cough.

When the coughing had stopped, and he had his breath back, he slumped further down into the bed he was lying on. Even though he was lying on his clothes, the bed was the most comfortable thing he'd ever lain down on. "Ashlee, doctor," he murmured, "thank."

He really needed to learn more of this language.

Henry got an IV that was meant to help with dehydration. He also gathered some antibiotics as well as medicine to help with the cough. He came around and took one of Kelan's arms.

Ashley stepped out of the way but stayed so Kelan could see her.

Henry miraculously found a vein and taped the needle in place, the injected the medicine into the tube from the IV bag.

"This is going to help you get better. It'll help with your cough." Henry touched his chest and then mimicked a cough. "Ashley is going to clean you up while I get some clean blankets." He started to reach for Kelan's dirty blanket.

Kelan let the doctor do whatever he needed to do without a fuss. This was the 'midsin', after all.

Of course, then the doctor reached for his blanket. Kelan frowned at that. [What do you want this for? It's filthy,] he pointed out, even though he knew nobody understood. He pushed himself up on one elbow and looked all round. This room was so clean, like everything else in it. Except for him and his blanket and his ruined clothes. And Ashlee was trying to clean him... [Are you going to clean this? You'd be better off getting rid of it,] he added, and then started moving carefully so that he could get the blanket and his overcoat out from underneath him. He didn't want to get tangled up in the 'midsin' tube.

Kelan obviously didn't understand wh as t was going on so Ashley went and got a new blanket. It was gray and very soft and she held it out to him. "You can have this one." She smiled.

Henry was glad that he seemed to be willingly giving everything over. He wanted to get Kelan out of the dirty clothes.

He'd finally gotten his legs free of the blanket and coat when Ashlee held something out towards him. He waited until her smile before hesitantly reaching for it. He couldn't help but brush his fingers over it. It was one of the softest things he'd ever touched, and he smiled back as he took it from Ashlee. [Is this for me?] he asked, then pointed at the blanket before pointing at himself.

Ashley nodded, then pointed to the blanket and pointed to Kelan. They would need to get him some new clothes but that could wait.

Henry came over with a hospital gown and set it on the bed beside Kelan.

Ashley grabbed another one and showed him how to put it on before pointing to the gown and pointing to Kelan agsin.

This piece of clothing was strange, but he did as he was shown once he'd sat up carefully. The Midsin tube got in the way a bit, but Kelan didn't much care.

[This is strange,] he said as he looked down at the gown and ran his fingers along it. [Do many peo-] he began, before having to stop and cough yet again. He'd been lying down long enough that things had shifted about in his lungs and now that he was sitting upright, he was having to deal with everything moving once more. It was an extremely productive (and nasty-sounding) cough.

Ashley frowned when he started coughing. Her instinct was to rub his back but she remembered the wounds and instead grabbed a glass of water. "Here." She wasn't sure if it would help at all.

His old dirty blanket was still beside him on the bed, so he grabbed at it and got rid of as much of the gunk as possible. Once the coughing fit was over, he seemed to slump in on himself. When he reached for the glass, his hand was shaking slightly. He should apologize, that had to have been disgusting to watch. What was the word Sookie had said?

"I... I am... am sor?" Something like that. Was it right?

"Sorry." Ashley corrected. "You don't have to be sorry. You're sick." She patted his shoulder. She did take the dirty blanket this time, throwing it in a nearby bin. She fully intended to incinerate it later. She grabbed a box of tissues and a small trashcan and put them within reach of the bed.

"Use these." She took one of the tissues and pretended to cough into it, then wadded it up and put it in the trash can.

"Sorry," he repeated, then watched where she went and what she lifted while wrapping his new blanket round himself.

He reached over to the box, and copied what Ashlee had done, using the little squares to catch the gunk. This was a lot better than using his old blanket, which looked to be gone for good now. He looked over at his coat after that. It was dirty and bloodstained right now, and patched together in a lot of places, but he didn't want to get rid of it just yet. [I'd like to keep this,] he said, putting his hand down on it.

Ashley smiled when he used the tissue. That would be a lot easier to get rid of. She didn't understand his question but she could understand body language. Ashley nodded.

"I can clean it for you. Wash it." They really needed some way to communicate.
