Ernest Hemingway ([info]papahemingway) wrote in [info]spinningcompass,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who? Ernest & Isabel (and/or Charlie)
Where? His apartment to start.
When? Shortly after Abi's reappearance.
What? Not having a breakdown.
Rating? TBD
Open? Ask first.

Charlie had done a damn good job of getting rid of all the booze. There was one half bottle of whiskey stashed on top of a tall cabinet in the study that he hadn't managed to find, but after a couple of straight mouthfuls, Ernest had decided to put it back where it was. An emergency supply of sorts.

People were being nice to him about it, and he was running the gamut of emotions. Angry to miserable to apathetic seemed to be the top contenders at the moment. He didn't want their pity, but at the same time he really didn't want to be left alone with himself.

Isabel. There had been an immediate pang of guilt when her message came through. He was going insane over the woman he'd loved over ten years earlier, and he had a perfectly good woman who knew who he was and for some reason still wanted him. How could she want to help him? It felt cruel to ask her for her help, but apparently he was in a cruel mood.

Ernest let himself get lost in the kiss for a moment, letting it wipe away all the concerns and anxieties for now. He knew that it couldn't be as easy as this, but for now he was willing to just go with it.

"Yeah? I should hope so," he grinned, giving her a playful nudge. "It would be really awkward if you weren't enjoying it."

She smiled and kissed his cheek. "I'd definitely let you know if I weren't." She reached up to touch his cheek. Isabel just looked into his eyes for a moment. She knew this had to be bothering him more than he was showing but she didn't push. Rather than saying anything she kissed him again.

"Oh, I believe it. You're not shy about letting me know what you want," he smiled, giving her a little wink. "I like that about you," he added incase she thought he meant it otherwise.

And then her lips were on him again, and of course he was aware that there was a hell of a lot more going on under the surface. But he appreciated that she was willing to go at his pace with it all.

She let the kiss go on as long as she could, finally moving back a little. Her hand stayed on his cheek and she touched her forehead to his. After a moment of silence she chuckled softly. "You've got a song stick in my head."

Ernest gave her a curious look, a small smile playing on his lips. "Oh yeah? What song's that then?"

She kept her hand on his cheek, moving just enough to look him in the eye before she started singing softly.

"Just for this moment
As long as you're mine
Come be how you want to
And see how bright we shine
Borrow the moonlight
Until it is through
And know I'll be here
Holding you
As long as you're mine"

When she actually started singing instead of just saying the name of the song, it took him very much by surprise. Not that he would have known it by name anyway, he didn't recognise the song in the slightest. He gave her a bit of a wide-eyed look until she stopped.

After a moment's silence, he realised that he really, really didn't have a good response to that, so instead he opted for just pulling her into another kiss.

She kissed back and just held onto him. She hadn't been sure how he'd react when she started singing. She didn't want to let go. She just wanted to hold him.

Ernest knew that they couldn't just go on hugging and kissing and not properly talking forever, but he was content enough for the moment to let her show him sweetness and affection.

After another few moments, Isabel broke the kiss once again. She held him close, resting her head on his shoulder.

"Normally I would be the girl that steps aside. That makes sure everybody else is happy regardless of my feelings." She sat up a little and looked at him. "I don't want to be that girl this time. I want to be selfish and keep you all to myself."

Ernest tilted his head, listening to her curiously as she decided on her stance on it all, and as usual, he quickly tried to formulate the 'right' thing to say, for this woman, this situation, to this this particular person stay and love him.

"Isabel..." he sighed, deciding not to go down that path yet again. "You should... withhold judgment, until you know me better. You might change your mind on that," he told her. "I'm not a nice person. I don't want to fool you into thinking that I am."

Isabel sighed softly. She took his hands in hers and just held them, looking down at their hands this time. "It's bravery stemming from the fact that she doesn't remember you." She shrugged. "I can say it now. And...I do mean it. I want to be with you." She brought his hands to her lips and kissed his knuckles. "All of that could change tomorrow."

Ernest worried his brow, watching her expression and trying his best not to feel incredibly guilty over the situation. He knew that it was just circumstances, and if anything was to blame it was the damn station, but he couldn't help but curse the timing of it. If they were further down the line, they'd have a better idea what they actually wanted.

"For today? Okay. I can get on board with that," he nodded, smiling affectionately as she kissed his knuckles. "Selfishly I kind of hope not, but... yeah, we'll go with for now."

Isabel sighed again. She wanted everything to be the way it was just two days ago. The two of them having fun and not worrying about much. Of course they would have things to worry about if Abi hadn't shown up but it wouldn't be this.

"All we can do is take it one day at a time." She wanted to make plans. To talk about next month, even next week, but that wasn't possible anymore. Everything could change in a flash. It was a really good thing she couldn't grant her own wishes.

That was the thing - he'd been miserable for years, and it felt like the moment he'd actually let go and tried to have something good, the universe just had to throw him another curveball. And he was sick of being miserable.

"Yeah, I guess so," he responded with a heavy sigh. It wasn't what he wanted to do, but they didn't have much of a choice. "All right, so I'm really fucking bored of moping my life away, so what do you want to do? For this one day of time."

"That, Mr Hemingway, is a very good question." She chuckled softly. Isabel looked around for a moment and finally really looked at where they were. "How about a swim?" She indicated the lake.
