Nandita had been busy the last few days leaving heavy foot traffic in and out of the apartment as she went to uncover the various food sources on the ship. It had become a madness within her when she got it in her head to try and cook something for Kai to bring him the warmth and pleasures of home. In every other way since their marriage she had failed as his wife. As a fae she hardly wanted to care about it. She was whimsy and playful; commitments were not her strong suit. Yet she was incredibly loyal and in such a place as this she had only Kai until she truly got out to meet anyone else. She knew she should have gone to be social but she was struck by an idea that kept her busy. It was not that she was Kai's wife that kept her driven but the matter that they had been wed for his survival. His life depended on her own and she was not going to let her light and magic dwindle to depression so he could fade away without followers. Happiness, she believed, as a core feeling within all religions. If you were happy with yourself and your beliefs you were more likely to remain.
So she would make Kai happy.
It was a round about thought, no doubt, but Nandita's heart was surely in the right place. Finally, after four days of scouring the internet for recipes and searching high and low on the space ship for materials she woke up and promptly told Kai to get out. "Good morning, my love! I hope you have a fantastic day--go swim. Do not come back until dinner. Here is a breakfast and lunch so you don't starve." She held up a pair of carefully prepared bags full of meals and await his leaving before turning to fly off into the kitchen and cook.
The day was long and tiring. She wasn't sure if she had succeeded or not. The meal tasted fine. It was not fantastic nor was it horrific; it just was. Nandita couldn't say she was done learning, that she was completely satisfied with the product, but she wanted to believe she came fairly close to what it should have tasted like. You try making proper seafood without anything from a proper sea! She had taste-tested everything from the spices to the vegetable and greenery sides to the meat. It had taken her all day and two attempts before this was her best result. Knowing she could improve, but also knowing the clock was ticking with Kai to return no doubt at any moment, she set the table.
Somewhere she had found candles and lit them in decorative groups of three around the dining space with two paired at the center of the table. She had picked up far more impressive plates and silverware on her journey to find supplies, as well, so their table had shining blue and white plates that she hoped would remind him of the ocean in a fond way with scrubbed clean silverware set carefully over a navy blue cloth napkin. Her presentation for the meal, regardless of it's final taste, was impeccable. Nandita understood half of eating was the eye appeal and devouring it in one's mind, the flavor imagined before it even touched the tongue. Setting the lights to the home low to allow the candles to flicker and provide ambiance the fairy swept herself into the room to change.
Nandita dressed in her most appropriate sari, an elegant draping of silk and chiffon in shades of blues and teals highlighted with gold. She draped herself in sapphires and golden jewels, rings, bracelets, and earrings. A part of her paused to consider Kai would feel under dressed after having been out all day compared to her luxurious, date-night worthy attire, but he could always change before the meal if he desired. She wanted to stun and surprise him and while she had come to understand he appreciated her without the miles of fabric and pounds of gold she simply couldn't help herself. She had dressed this way for centuries and it was part of her culture; but she did try to apply slightly less makeup. A bit on the eyes, a dab of color on her lips, her bindi dot she wore with pride.
Checking on her meal, covered under an aluminum lid on the kitchen counter she smiled and nodded. Perfect. All she needed was Kai.
