Rey’s mind was more than a little blown. She’d found that the thing that Ren had used to try and gain access to her memories had also allowed her to ‘hear’ the other Force users in the temple. And she’d nearly come apart at the seams when she’d ‘heard’ Obi Wan Kenobi. A brief and very tiring telepathic conversation had resulted in organising a training session with someone she’d hardly believed existed before she came here.

While Rey got herself settled, Obi-Wan decided on what they would do. Quickly filtering through what he knew of the young girl, he edited his usual lesson plans that worked for younger children and adapted them to fit a young woman who'd been surviving on her own for any number of years.

"We will start with the basics," he began. "Meditation is not about clearing your mind of clutter. Your ship's got a broken motivator, Jawas have discovered your previously well-hidden salvage spot and have stripped it almost bare, the cost of food has gone up again, so many different thoughts all competing for space in your mind. And they are all important. Sweeping them out of the way will do you no good, as they will still be waiting for you when you're finished meditating. That's what's happened before, yes?"

"Yes," Rey replied. "I worry I won't be good enough to be a Jedi, to be anything more than I ever was. I didn't protect Finn...and Han. I should be avenging him, not hiding."

"I guarantee you, every Master in this Temple has had those same worries." Obi-Wan gave her a small smile, despite the twinge of worry her words regarding avenging gave him. "I could tell you about a young boy who spent many weeks of sleepless nights in the initiates dormitory, utterly convinced that he would not be chosen as a Padawan by his thirteenth birthday, and that he would be sent out to one or other of the various Corps. His birthday came and went, and he was not chosen, so he was assigned to Agricorps, on a planet called Bandomeer. But the Force moves in ways we will never understand, and there was a Jedi Master on the same transport as the young initiate. To cut a rather long story short, Master Qui-Gon saw something in me that he liked, and decided to take me as his Padawan."

Ben's memories flared up in the back of his mind as he spoke, memories of a life where Qui-Gon had decided that no, he would not take young Obi-Wan Kenobi as his Padawan, but Obi-Wan knew to focus on his memories for the time being. This was not one of his meditation sessions with Kytana, after all.

"Everyone worries that they are not good enough. Everyone dwells on things they should have done, or done differently. They are more than understandable. Meditation will help you to work with your worries. As I said, it is not about clearing your mind of clutter. It is about being able to move past the clutter to reach a calm point, to reach your centre. It can be difficult at first, but I will show you what to do, and soon you will be able to centre yourself in moments."

"But I'm actually not good enough, not even my family wanted me...only Finn's ever really worried about me...and BB8." Rey smiled fondly at the thought of the little droid, as one might a pet. "I'd like to learn how to be better. I want to be a good Jedi, I need to deserve it."

"You are not responsible for your family's actions, Rey," he replied, "and since you wish to learn, I suggest we start now."

Once he was certain Rey was comfortable, he began to ask a few questions. "Before you arrived here, can you tell me about the times you know that you have used the Force, or that you have felt its presence. As I said before, I know that you have used the Force but I would like to know how you were feeling when you did so."

"Really when I got off the ship, when I fought Ren with my mind, and got the stormtrooper to let me go," Rey replied. "I think."

Nodding, Obi-Wan paid attention to the flow of the Force around the girl as she spoke, and then picked one of the moments she mentioned as the Force nudged at him to ask about it. "I would like to ask about when you fought Ren, if you don't mind. Could you tell me what was happening? How did you know how to fight back? What was it that you did?"

"I don't know how I knew. I just knew that if he got what he wanted people I cared about would get hurt and I had to try and block him when he got into my mind, I figured I'd die, but I had people who needed me to be stronger than him." Rey replied.

"I see. So, he was in your mind first." Obi-Wan thought quickly, and then decided to try something that would seem to be on a complete tangent to their current discussion.

"Watch me carefully, please. Use all your senses, not just your sight." There was a small pile of stones just off to the side of where they were, and Obi-Wan reached out with his hand. Using very deliberate moves both within the Force and with his hand, he gestured towards one of the bigger stones and lifted it in the air, perhaps a foot off the ground. Then he slowly lowered his hand and the stone gradually came to rest on the grass below it. "Copy what you saw me do."

Rey tried to repeat his actions while she watched the stones, but failed, sweat standing on her forehead.

She thought back, remembering the feelings that had triggered her and shut her eyes, bringing thoughts of Finn to the front of her mind. The stone moved, but was nowhere near as controlled as Obi Wan.

"Very good," he congratulated her, no matter that it had taken her some time.

"You blocked Ren but only once you knew what he was doing in the first place. You copied my actions when I asked you to, but I'm wondering if it's because you saw what I was doing within the Force. If I show you how I meditate, can you copy that as well?" he said, thinking out loud for Rey's benefit, before calling the stone to his hand.

"I think so...I'm not clever enough am I? i'm a battler and a scavenger, not a thinker," Rey replied.

"Stop running yourself down, Rey," Obi-Wan said, speaking firmly. "You have survived for how long on your own? Learning all manner of things about all different types of ships and droids. How many languages do you speak? Finn tells me you're an excellent pilot, and I can tell you now, people who aren't clever enough do not become excellent pilots, or work out how to shoot ships out of the sky when their guns are jammed. You are capable, you are intelligent, you clearly know how to think on your feet, and you need to start believing in yourself. Finn does. I'm sure Poe does. I wouldn't have offered to train you if I didn't believe in you. Most importantly, the Force itself believes in you. And yet you have repeatedly told me in the space of less than half an hour that you're not clever enough, you're not good enough and even your own family didn't want you."

He reached over and put his hand on her knee as he spoke. "A very wise Jedi once said that there are no accidents. We are where we are because the Force wills it. You are here because the Force decided it. The Force thinks you are clever enough, you are good enough, and if you could only see the potential you carry within you, you would understand why the Force wants you. Stop doubting yourself and take your first steps on the path to becoming the Jedi you are destined to become."

"I'll do whatever it takes. Ren used The Force against people, but I don't believe that's what it's for. I hope something in Keylo Ren has changed, because he's here, and he hasn't come looking for me," Rey replied.

"I don't want to hurt anyone. I do want to be able protect people if I need to and to learn. And five and half years. And three languages well, two passable and one I can just swear in," Rey replied.

"I love to fly, I'm good enough in a fight and I had to think on my feet to live. I really want you to train me, Master."
