Some days there's this weird bittersweet feeling, like science is so cool, and I really wish everyone could have stuck with using it to make people's lives better instead of finding new and better ways of killing each other.

Which I recognise is possibly a little ironic from someone who got a damn good reputation for getting things done in the Special Forces, but I guess that's the eternal contradiction of humanity (and also capitalism).

Science is a double edged sword. It depends on the hands.

Some people are pretty damn determined to use the wrong one. And even if you're not it can be easy to get carried away.

Preaching to the choir, friend.

I've found myself thinking the same, though not specifically with magic. Then again there are spells that were purposely designed to kill.

I think that's one of the reasons why I enjoy being a Healer so much, and why I garden.

People can be both the best and the worst.

That's true.

Hard not to dwell on the worst sometimes, isn't it?

Science can be interesting, in the long run. But Tony's not wrong. It depends on whose hands it's in.

"Tony's not wrong." I'm framing this.

I don't know who that is. Either way, don't let it get to your head. Don't mess with a girl who knows her own science.

Yeah. And the crappy thing is, dwelling on that too much can lead you down some pretty dark paths itself.

It can. Which is why no one is allowed to do it. Much less those I care about.

Between you and Tony talking about people I don't know.

Either way, you and him have become people I care about. So, no going down paths you shouldn't.

Steve or the Dark Paths(tm)? There were just a lot of the latter at home. So, you know, they're familiar. I got good night vision.

Science in the hands of one person is never a good thing.

They go to far and no one ever checks them.

There are plenty of people I've killed, plenty of people I wish I could save, but that power is too much for any people to have.

My timeline was basically a long series of perfect examples. There's a lot of work I deliberately didn't explore or kept to myself because of how it would have been used.

I don't know if 'keeping it to yourself' is a great acomplishment here if you were doing unsavory work.

I grew up with a man who bought children, and used science as a crutch to do what he pleased to them under the guise of experiments.

Mad Scientist types can fuck off.

A lot of it was medical. My thesis was on restoring functionality to paralysed limbs. Problem is the government was sort of obsessed with creating human weapons so there was a whole balancing act between finding ways to fix people and finding ways to enhance them. I had family members in living memory who were sacrificed for the latter.

More people did than didn't. A lot of them assumed I was just a theoreticist. A good one, just not necessarily capable of turning theory into practice.
