Uh oh.

We're not supposed to be on Earth. How did we even get here?

Mr. Tony said this wasn't really Earth. So, how is a part of Earth?

Yeah, it's... kind of complicated. It's like a little area all by itself, so even if we had a boat or a plane we couldn't get anywhere else on Earth.

How come? Is it like the Ark? You're not supposed to spacewalk. You can, but you're not supposed to unless something is broken.

Sort of like that, yeah. Like if there was another small station on the outside of the Ark and you could only get to it by spacewalking, but we don't have any spacesuits. All the air's different so it's not radioactive.

So, if this was the space station then we couldn't spacewalk. Okay! At least the air is okay. We can't go to Earth because of the radiation.

Do you know Mr. Tony?

Exactly. You're pretty smart.

Yeah, he's a really good friend of mine. I'm Dr Sam.

I'm Raven!

What kind of doctor are you?

A doctor for sick people, but I also study ways to make people's bodies work better with little machines, like if someone had an accident and their arm didn't work properly anymore or had to get taken off.

I like machines!

You have some that make bodies work better? That's cool.

Very, very small ones that can talk to your brain.

They talk to your brain? How did you make them talk?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Well, the brain has billions of tiny little cells called neurons that take messages around the body. When you think about moving your hand, it starts in your brain where you make the decision, and then some neurons travel through your shoulder and arm to your hand to tell the muscles what to do. Instead of using words they use a kind of electricity, so if machines use the same kind of electricity they can trick the brain into thinking they're neurons too. So if the paths that normal neurons use to travel are broken and they can't get across, we can program the machines to get through instead.

So the machines talk to your brain and make your brain think they're part of the body. Like they were always a part of the body. Right? It can't hurt you or anything because the body thinks it's always been there, so doesn't reject it.

Exactly. Normally if you put something in your body it would try to get rid of it.

How do you keep the body from rejecting it, though?

That's one of the hard parts. It took people a long time to figure out good ways to stop that happening, you have to make sure nothing gets on the machines that could upset your immune system. I used to keep them in a sort of fluid that kept them clean and protected them.

But couldn't your body still attack them?

Sometimes, yeah. A lot of things can go wrong. Most science is like that.

Not good with science. Just machines.
