[Batfamily + Tommy]

Tell me this isn’t happening.

[Freddy]

I need you to promise me that you and your friends are not going to talk to the clown. Under any circumstances.

I always assumed. It's not the sort of thing Alfred would pick out. Someone had to choose those books. I don't know if Bruce's parents were the kind to feed him that sort of crap, but if they were, a lot would make sense.

Maybe we stick to the Brontes for now, instead of taking a stroll down traumatizing childhood literature lane.

It’s not really the book I’m talking about, though. I meant that all of this was predestined like that line said. How many ‘coincidences’ had to happen for this to end up where it did? It never really mattered what choice was made along the way, because it would always end up coming out to the same thing.

I don't really believe in destiny. But that's not to say I don't believe in curses and maybe the cape is just cursed. We've all worn it, we've all suffered for it, it's the one thing we all have in common.

I made it to draw attention - the costume. Like an animal's warning colors. I made it draw focus, to draw fire, to keep an eye on me so Batman could do what Batman did. And hell if it didn't work. A little too well. I just passed the curse down to the rest of you and I can't take that back. You wouldn't have even been with Bruce in the first place if I didn't threaten him. Not that you would have been any better off if I had raised you instead cause God knows I don't know what the hell I'm doing any more than he does.

But it happened before we ever put on the cape. Everything had to fall into place perfectly to make that happen, too. How many times did my father sell without getting caught? How many times did my mother shoot up before then? How many times had I been down that alley? Christ, Dick. What about Natalia? I still ended up with him. You never could have stopped it.

And what about you? How does anything that happened between you and him make any more sense than that? There was no reason he should have been there that night. He shouldn’t have even been able to take you home with him like he did. And you shouldn’t have ended up back in his house after the first time that you were out of it. Both of us got out and then both of us were pulled back.

I can’t seem to shake the feeling that it's by design.

For years I told myself he was just keeping an eye on Zucco and followed him there. That Zucco brought him there, not me. And that would be a Bruce thing to do. Sit back and watch someone commit some horrific crime because he still wasn't intervening until he had evidence before then. But then he felt bad. Because he didn't intervene. I made it make sense in my 10-year-old head and I just haven't moved on past that despite all evidence to the contrary.

And you know what kept me coming back. I didn't have to be Robin or Nightwing to go crawling back for that. I just had to be a complete idiot.
