Tony Stark: Earth's Best Defender ([info]allaboutego) wrote in [info]snapthread,

WHO: The Genius Club (13, Strange, Stark)
WHAT: The first meeting AKA Tony’s coffee date with two doctors.
WHERE: COFFEE.
WHEN: Sunday, April 28
RATING: Low? There might be a few Endgame spoilers in here because Natasha said stuff and Tony’s really thinking about it.

Tony would be the first to admit that if this was a meet that had already happened regularly or even once before now, he might very well have called it off just because with the appearance of Natasha, he had an awful lot on his mind that didn’t just have to do with the concepts of time and dimensional travel.

Like a lot. The kind of stuff that wasn’t intellectual so much as existential.

But in the end, he decided that bouncing ideas and concepts off the walls with like minded people (with different areas of expertise than him, even) would be a wonderful distraction. About as good as one could be, actually.

So he texted Stephen (which, weird, but there it was) and then The Doctor about when they ought to meet and made his way over earlier than all that in order to get a chat in with his two favorite Avenger Baristas to see how they were doing and to apologize ahead of time for what would most likely be a good deal of yelling. And to tell them to just keep the coffee flowing, and in return offered to build them whatever it was they wanted next for their shop.

It worked out for everyone, really.

After that, all he had to do was set up shop by pulling out some pencil and paper (ugh, how archaic) and the new tablet that he’d been working on building lately (less archaic, but not completely up to his speed either. He’d get there, once he found the right parts).

Right yeah, that'd almost practically met before. At Pancho's. Except at the time, Tony had been drunk and acting a little idiotically by talking to only people who wanted to have nothing to do with him. It'd been a thing. Apparently geniuses were stupid sometimes, too. "Face to face is better," Tony agreed, and then pushed his tablet a little closer to her, snapping his fingers over the top of it to wake it up. Frankly, it was all about working in 3D or nothing, because Tony really didn't want to have to understand how screens worked anymore. "Just a thing I've been working --"

He paused when Stephen entered the shop, all lights and fingers movements and great hair but bad style and he couldn't help but heave out a sigh that was so incredibly put upon that it might have been a wonder to others that Tony'd only really known this version of him for a few days and another version of him for -- well. Just about as long. Only a handful of days total.

"You're such a showboat, Strange," he said flatly, even as he poured another cup of coffee from a carafe and then pushed it across the table near the man. "But thanks for coming. Doctor. This is Dr. Stephen Strange. Strange, this is the Doctor. I think we've got a lot to talk about."

She was grinning with excitement at Tony's gadget, wanting to explore it and absorbed in how it worked when the other doctor entered. She had to do a quick double take at the symbols in front of him as he maneuvered his way over, cocking her head to the side and grinning.

"Can I ask?" She glanced at Tony, hoping he would give her permission because she was going to have a lot of questions for the poor other man.

"Yes! The Doctor. Pleasure to meet you. Now...what is that? What is it for? Are you human, and can I scan you??"

Yes. Shew as full of questions and hard-pressed to stay on topic. Glancing at Tony she asked. "Sorry....too much? I've been told I can sometimes be too much."

"Oh, the Doctor," Strange replied, good-humored behind his oh-so-tired eyes. He sat down and took the cup of coffee, giving it a sniff before pulling back a gulp. "I think you'll find, whew, that name is going to be hard to trademark. And I'm sure many superheroes have tried. You know, this actually reminds me of bodega drip. Specifically when you go in at seven at night and the same pot's been sitting there all day. Definitely familiar."

Another gulp. Apparently he didn't mind. Or he was that desperate. One hand stayed anchored on the coffee cup, the other steadily in his pocket.

"I am human, that was a spell, and what it is doing is performing an MRI of the magical and psychic resonance of this dimension. Took me all night to write the script for it, I wish I had my books, but we'll see what it reveals. Particularly if that resonance ties back to any Principalities. Might help with the 'who' of this science experiment. And now," another gulp, followed by the sound of him sucking the liquid off his teeth, "you've just subjected me to one examination, so I think a scan is wholly unnecessary."

Strange gave her a wink to show that he was (still) good humored, not insulted, by the line of questioning. If anything, her excitement was a little thrilling.

"I see why you said to leave Banner out of it, Tony." The briefest of snorts, again into his coffee cup. "Looks like he's been replaced."

The shit-eating grin on his face practically stretched the width of Manhattan.

This was going to be terrible and amazing in even quantities, Tony decided when the Doctor went off on a tangent of questions and Strange responded in kind, but with more snark than was wholly necessary. And that was saying a lot because Tony had that stuff in spades himself.

"Way too much. You should definitely keep it up though," Tony said, pouring out refills of coffee even while he looked overly smug. Because, jesus, if the three of them weren't the smartest people in town, and it was pretty damned clear by Strange's smile that he knew it too. "Banner's good for work on gamma radiation and most biologies," he said, lifting a shoulder. It'd be nice to see his friend, but -- "I'm not sure how nice it would be if the Hulk decided to show up in this little town. But Doctor here has extensive knowledge in time and space travel and knows how to build something that might help us steer this place. How long does your--" he gestured vaguely with his hand, like he was trying to emulate light and nonsense with wiggling digits. "spell take to turn up some results?"

She'd heard that joke before. A few dozen times, actually, and it was written on her face just how many times she'd heard it. But she was smirking, too, because she sensed the humor behind this man who was addicted to coffee and claimed to do magic- perhaps it was magic. Nothing about this place made sense, at the same time, she was starting to realize that perhaps it wasn't so impossible for magic to exist in other universes, even if it did not exist in her own. Right? She'd be a fool to dismiss the idea entirely. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to get to the bottom of how it worked. Eventually. Maybe.

"Fascinating." Her single word answer might have told them everything. She definitely wanted to know more about how it worked. Maybe later.

"You're sure? Might be able to tell us a bit more about you and how you work- well, maybe just me and how you work. But if you're not comfortable by it, I won't." She didn't look super happy by it, but she clearly was alright with letting the subject drop for now.

"Who's Banner?" Her attention turned back to Tony with a raised eyebrow. An expert on gamma radiation. Sounded like a smart man (for a human).

"Yes! Whatever you read, please share. I haven't been able to find anything abnormal about this place aside from the doors and that in itself is suspicious. I mean...other than the whole being trapped here thing, there usually is some kind of abnormality somewhere. This place is perfect. Which means it's far from it."

"So, just so our CV's are on the proverbial table," Strange said while Tony poured more coffee (he watched him do it, watched the liquid fill all the way up. Wow. Glorious). "The Doctor's space and time, Tony's physics and engineering, and I'm magic and transdimensional energies." He pointed to each of them in turn with the index finger of the hand that remained gripped around his sacred chalice of black caffeine. Then he added, as an afterthought, "Well, I also have medicine. And technically Tony has capitalism. But neither are applicable right now so they don't count." He mouthed at Tony in so much faux seriousness 'it doesn't count.'

Another hit of coffee. After so much caffeine he could practically see through time at this point.

"If you want to know more about me and how I work, Doctor, I can be wooed with conversation. I'm partial to a rich Montepulciano. Although my time abroad made me quite the fan of a quality hookah. But I'm not big on sharing. The germs."

"You might be surprised to hear, Tony, although honestly this is a good preface for both of you since I see we're looking at things through a specific bias," Stephen swiveled in his chair, his posture lackadaisical and slouched, "magic is not an exact science."

And pause for two seconds while the joke landed.

"I don't know how broad this dimension is, how deep it is, if it has dragon lines or leylines or heart lines or is conterminous with other realities and that's why we all got plucked or a thousand other possible compounding variables. I'm casting a wide net here to try and see what details it drags back to shore. Then I can get more specific. But what do you mean steer the place?"

Wildly glorious. The pot would be empty sooner rather than later because Strange was on top of it, and every time he refilled a cup for him, Tony did one for himself too (it only made sense). He tended to do most everything in excess when giving a proper excuse, and this was a damn great one by most measures. "Physics and engineering and literally anything else if I read up on if for a few hours," Tony corrected, because he felt like he was being a little short changed in comparison to time and space and magic. He rose an eyebrow at the mouthed words, and shook his head slowly. No. Capitalism always counted, thanks.

"Magic is bullshit," Tony countered, because he couldn't help himself. Frankly, he'd probably get himself worked up about it but it was infuriating because he didn't know how it worked. And Tony? Tony was someone who could figure anything out if he put his mind to it for long enough. But then came a guy with a floaty cape and third eye powers or something and Tony about lost his mind about it whenever he considered it too hard.

More coffee, then.

"Banner is -- he's a friend. Maybe mutual friend." Look, he didn't know what Stephen was about beyond hobo grunge and flirting. "He's good with some pretty specific sciences. Also turns into a giant rage monster. Good guy, though. And what we mean by steering is just that. The Doctor here apparently has a ship that travels space and time and we thought if we could rebuild the controls -- well." He leaned forward, waved his hand through the air in a way that cut, because he was making a point here, okay. He didn't even need to finish his sentence, he was sitting with people who could infer just fine.

"Well, space, time, physics, philosophy- I've had 2000 or so years to study up." She smiled and nodded to Tony as he explained he knew more than physics. But if Strange was going to be a killjoy, she wasn't going to push it. Not now, anyway. Not worth it. Well, maybe a little worth it. Later, though.

She had noticed how much coffee they were consuming but hadn't commented yet. Her eyes went from the pot to each man as they explained their positions on magic. "Magic is science. Or at least, it seems to follow similar rules, doesn't it?? Not that I've any experience with it myself, but you even explained that there are techniques to it and a certain level of skill and studying the craft. That seems much like science that just hasn't been quantified." She shrugged. "But that's just me. Do they biscuits here?" She was looking to the counter in curiosity. "Oooo, or tea! I could use a cuppa tea."

Anyway, Banner! Right. That made sense. She'd ask questions about the green guy thing later, but for now, there was the matter at hand. "Well, we need to find a source first. Where a mainframe or...brain of this thing might be. We can't just build anywhere. And we'll need a continuous source of power. The TARDIS is tricky, almost alive. She's really, really a beautiful thing to behold. I hope you can see her one day." The Doctor sounded a little disappointed at the notion, seeing as her TARDIS had been missing for so long.

"Okay, great. Like I said, let's get our CV's on the table." Because it was better that they knew what areas of expertise they all had, he reckoned. But it seemed like that was getting misinterpreted.

"Magic isn't science, in the same way that rectangles are squares but squares aren't rectangles. But it is very common for science folks to say that magic is bullshit or to try and pidgeon hole it into 'misunderstood science.' Sure, I get it, I used to be that way, too. Or they decide to eradicate anyone who thinks differently and kill every witch and wizard on the planet." Loud slurp. "That's always a fun debate. Except it's not really ever a debate because sorcerers don't try and tell scientists that something like biology or physics is actually magic and they're just misunderstanding it."

The cup hit the table and he slid it away from him. Stephen had lost count of how many times people had lectured to him, and he wondered how many times the Ancient One had deflected the question. He remembered the answer he'd been given-- magic can be whatever your mind needs it to be, and that's okay, because magic isn't threatened by the limits of your understanding.

"I think the productive conversation is your plan. So are you saying that you could build this thing and then you could drive us all home on the transdimensional interstate?"

While Tony hadn't gotten lectured by Strange before on this topic, it still sort of ended up being exactly what he'd imagined it would be like, a sort of titchy pointing out of the facts. Magic wasn't science. Yeah, he knew that. It was the reason he didn't like it. Because it felt like something he couldn't uncover or learn just by watching long enough.

Mostly he'd made peace with that idea, but it was kind of fun riling Stephen up.

He leaned back in his seat, glancing over at Clint behind the counter, and frankly, Tony was fairly certain that he was napping. "I think you'd be better off searching for the tea on your own," he pointed out. "But yes I'm saying that I could build this thing and then I could put the proverbial pedal to the metal. Potentially." Probably. He wasn't sure. But he liked to think he could manage it because Tony was used to being able to manage most anything if it came to building it. If the Doctor's notes about the TARDIS were clear enough, he had some hope for it though. It'd be easier to see the ship in question, but that seemed like a no-go.

"So my first big guess on where the 'brain'," and yes, he was absolutely using air quotes for that, "might be is probably the most obvious spot. But how could it not be that House?"

As Strange seemed to get a little defensive, the Doctor made one of her very Doctor faces but realized there wasn't a point in arguing. Perhaps in his dimension magic existed, but in her dimension, it certainly did not (at least she would have expected to run into it at some point in her travels if it did). So she stayed mum on the subject. Though she did give Tony a bit of a is he for real look, but who's to say what that look met, anyway?

"That's what I was thinking." The Doctor nodded and considered. "It would make the most sense, especially with the energy readings I was gettin' there earlier. Perhaps even behind one of the doors. I have a theory regarding their frequencies. They vary depending on each location. If we could map the locations and their frequencies, maybe we could find a pattern? And maybe that pattern can help us open the doors to whatever the center of this place is." She sat back, probably sounding crazy.

"Or we can just look really, really hard around the place? I don't know. My theories sometimes don't pan out. I mean, they usually do, but there have been times I've been wrong." Humble. Sort of. She looked at Strange. "You said you're scanning this place. Maybe you can also look around for those frequencies? I mean, if you're not already. Or maybe one of you has a better plan? I'm not opposed to a better plan."

"I agree that the House seems like the key to understanding this place." Stephen rubbed his tired eyes and put his hand back into his pocket. It felt like his veins were vibrating.

"We know that a pocket dimension exists inside the Soul Stone, and if we operate under the theory that this place is the result of a flaw in the conjunction of the Infinity Stones one could hypothesize that this space is something similar. If we extrapolate on that theory, the doors might be symptomatic of the Space Stone, but instead of just tearing open doors into space, the Reality Stone is taking that one step further and opening doors to other realities. The influence of the Time Stone seems clear, there are people here from all different times."

He squinted, staring at...who could say.

"I'll let you both know what my spell, or, sorry, program reveals. I'll be on the lookout for Doc's frequencies. I'm guessing people are organizing expeditions into the doors to get survival goods in the meantime?"

"Have we checked under the floorboards?" Tony asked, because it was never too late or untimely to reference Poe, particularly when sitting across from a probably retired goth hobo wizard.

He picked up his cup again but didn't drink from it quite yet -- opting instead to nudge his tablet and paper both in the Doctor's direction. Notes were needed for him to even begin imagining what kind of build he was going to have to work on.

The rundown on the Stones left Tony with a few questions -- more based on what they were capable of singularly and perhaps if there were any differences between the stones in his universe and Stephen's. It seemed more like a later conversation though, admittedly. Still, he smiled a little crookedly over program instead of spell.

"Yeah, people are going on --" Tony raised his free hand like he was searching for a word to grab out of the air. "Field trips," he decided on finally. "But scavenging for things we all need seems to be going...fine. It might be better if we sorted it all out and wrote down a list of things we absolutely need. Everything's new and shiny now, but the second someone gets sick or hurt, we're up shit's creek."

She was happy to start drawing as they talked, working on the schematics and listening- sort of. "You're gonna have to explain to me about these Infinity Stones of yours. What are they? How many are there and what do they do? And what do they have to do with this place?" There she went again with all the questions.

The Doctor smirked at the mention or programs, too. She said nothing else of it, knowing better. Field trips? Was that what they were calling it?

"Definitely need to list out what we need- you should do that." She nodded to Tony as she drew. "I mean, you're their leader, right? Our leader, I guess. That's weird. " She cocked her head and inspected the first bits of her drawing. "I'm a better artist than I was before. Huh!"

As she wrote some notes, quickly scratching out the Gallifreyan symbols and switching to English, she went. on. "You need a hospital. And perhaps assign someone to be on the lookout? People are good right now, but wha' happens when someone isn't? Not sayin' it will happen, but probably need something of a plan for that, right?

"Not to mention makin' sure everyone has food and water. How're we doin' that?" She finished the first bit and slid it over to Tony. It was...complex. And just the start. A ventilation unit for what she hoped would be the equivalent of a small nuclear reactor core. She trusted him to be as good as he said he was.

Stephen took it upon himself to explain the Infinity Stones, complete with magical images and Celestials and explosions to simulate the Big Bang. Power, Mind, Space, Time, Reality, Soul. Six crystals that represent one of the cornerstones of reality, the apex of possibility without channeling extradimensional energy, challenged only by cosmic powers of a similar scale.

"The Infinity Stones are fraught with conflict, always sought by those who would wield them for their own agenda. We have prevented their union on multiple occasions. Their completion, obviously," Stephen gestured around them, "leads to cataclysm."

He banished the magical powerpoint presentation and returned his hands to his pockets.

"Food, water, generating power, medicine..." Stephen sat back down on the edge of his seat, like he wasn't going to get comfortable, "I know a lot of us are used to a lot of comforts and easy living. We need to strategize for survival now. Agricultural infrastructure, a power grid. These things take time but if we're anticipating to play the long game-- they're worth the investment. I'm a medical doctor, but we're going to need the basics like Penicillin if we encounter something more than the common cold."

Tony had to sit back a little and think about that - about the title that the Doctor was putting on him. He hadn't really considered it before, he'd just jumped in headfirst to help however he could, but he hadn't thought that had made him anyone's leader. Particularly since someone like Steve was here, too. "Maybe," he said, because it seemed like a stupid thing to question. It was best to just... take charge. He owed it to a lot of people to try his hardest.

He peeked at the Doctor's sketch even while Strange showed off with another light show. Turned out, yeah, not much was different at all about the Stones from one dimension to another. Maybe they were just a constant. Things that deserved to be put into black holes. Tony rubbed his hand over his face, sighed a little. "I'm so fucking tired of these stones," he admitted.

"Water's no problem, but I'll get people to bring back the bottled sort if they find it from now on," he said, checking a mental box. "Food is a work in progress - scavenging only does so much, I agree. So who knows anything about growing things, because I'm not that guy." The power grid he'd already taken care of. "You get me a list of the basics, Strange. You know my usual method for injury is waiting for death to make a point."

He drained his coffee cup. "And we should meet up every so often. To keep updated."

Brilliant. These stones were definitely intriguing and if they were as powerful as Strange said, they were something she'd wish to study. At a later date. If they were as dangerous as he said, then it was probably better they were hidden or kept apart. "Alright. Soooo supernatural powered stones with infinite and very dangerous potential. Understood."

Turning to Tony, she nodded. "Yes. Dr. Strange is correct about comforts. It's nice, but people are going to rely on each other to keep this place running and save. Especially as we have more and more newcomers." Though it was brilliant to see people already taking over in some regards. "Maybe we could ask others to start up gardens- I saw one already, but we'll need more. Oh! Farm-animals. Can we get farm animals?? Should we? There are benefits to veganism- I'm not a fan, but there are. I'm told."

She bit the tip of the pen and nodded to the plans. "They make sense to you? If not, I can add notes. Also should note that's just the start."

"We are fortunate enough that we haven't had to deal with threats yet, but we should be prepared. There are interdimensional entities that prey on isolated dimensions like this." Doctor Strange clucked his tongue and moved to stand. "Including the realm inside of the Soul Stone. The Sorcerer Supreme exists to defend his world from these kinds of threats. Investigating and bulwarking this place may be the best use of my particular training and talents."

"Agriculture is a baseline must for everyone. Finding a place to plant crops. Solar energy. Perhaps using the water in the pond to generate energy in some kind of high-tech water wheel? That seems to be in your wheelhouse, the both of you. We have no need for transportation, thank goodness. The town is small enough."

Strange pressed a hand against his temple, trying to think. It was getting more difficult. He was so bloody tired.

"And a dedicated medical facility. At least preparing a sterile space to receive patients and let them convalesce and receive treatment, whether magical or scientific."

"I'm already working on solar energy, what kind of amateur do you think I am, Strange?" He was a doctor too, thank you. But was apparently the only one at the table who didn't need to be reminded of the fact every few minutes. "Don't worry about the power. I've got that handled. I'll get the rest handled too. You just work on studying up on that House and hoping you don't have to do any kind of medical things." Strange was getting a little repetitive and Tony didn't miss how tired he looked, or how pressure to the temple sometimes helped. He knew the signs of not sleeping when he saw them because he lived it most always. It was best to be a little firm and then send the guy on his way for a nap. Or meditation. Or whatever it was Sorcerer Supremes did.

As for The Doctor? Well, she was perfect in every way and had clearly done nothing wrong, obviously. "Add some notes. But I think we can work on it together so maybe not to many notes. Also I'm not killing Betsy the cow for a hamburger no matter how much I wish I had one. That's not a decision I'm making."

The Doctor was still pretty bad at reading people, but she was already sending a bit of irritation from both of them, staring between them as she listened. Tony seemed on top of the basics, which was good. Strange had his things handled. She was just trying to think if she could help and how.

"Will do", she nodded, staring at the plans and sort of glad Tony had said he wouldn't go there. Yet. Twelve wouldn't have hesitated. Of course, he was far more a pragmatist than she was. Tony would have probably liked Twelve.

She had noticed how irritable Dr. Strange seemed, but the way he was drinking coffee spoke volumes. Lots and lots of coffee. She bit her tongue from making a comment and instead focussed on Tony. "I might need to scout out materials, and the formula for the injection cores are complex. What experience do you have with alien technology?" Again, she was just learning both men and piecing together their skills. "I'm good with buildin' things. If you need help, too." Just a means of keeping busy for now.

Strange could feel his limitations closing in. The lack of sleep, the things he saw when he closed his eyes, the withdrawal from the opium...he could only keep it at bay for so long with the magic he had at his disposal. And the last thing he wanted to do was to be perceived as weak by his colleagues.

"You two are the experts when it comes to technology. I don't think I will be of any help in that arena. Why don't I return home and ruminate further on these frequencies that the Doctor brought up?" He smiled briefly before his mouth returned to a neutral line, much like a rubber band snapping back to form after being stretched.

"Luckily, there are plenty of empowered individuals who can create energy at the drop of a hat to jump-start a generator or experiment. Although I'm not sure Thor is exactly a student of the scientific method, hmm?" Another wry smile, this time the joke was accompanied by a flick of his eyebrows.

"We will get through this yet, doctors. Historically we have an excellent track record for problem-solving. At least this time nobody's in agonizing torture at the hands of demons or dark gods, hmm? Feels like we have all the time in the world."
