Tony Stark: Earth's Best Defender ([info]allaboutego) wrote in [info]snapthread,

WHO: The Genius Club (13, Strange, Stark)
WHAT: The first meeting AKA Tony’s coffee date with two doctors.
WHERE: COFFEE.
WHEN: Sunday, April 28
RATING: Low? There might be a few Endgame spoilers in here because Natasha said stuff and Tony’s really thinking about it.

Tony would be the first to admit that if this was a meet that had already happened regularly or even once before now, he might very well have called it off just because with the appearance of Natasha, he had an awful lot on his mind that didn’t just have to do with the concepts of time and dimensional travel.

Like a lot. The kind of stuff that wasn’t intellectual so much as existential.

But in the end, he decided that bouncing ideas and concepts off the walls with like minded people (with different areas of expertise than him, even) would be a wonderful distraction. About as good as one could be, actually.

So he texted Stephen (which, weird, but there it was) and then The Doctor about when they ought to meet and made his way over earlier than all that in order to get a chat in with his two favorite Avenger Baristas to see how they were doing and to apologize ahead of time for what would most likely be a good deal of yelling. And to tell them to just keep the coffee flowing, and in return offered to build them whatever it was they wanted next for their shop.

It worked out for everyone, really.

After that, all he had to do was set up shop by pulling out some pencil and paper (ugh, how archaic) and the new tablet that he’d been working on building lately (less archaic, but not completely up to his speed either. He’d get there, once he found the right parts).

"I agree that the House seems like the key to understanding this place." Stephen rubbed his tired eyes and put his hand back into his pocket. It felt like his veins were vibrating.

"We know that a pocket dimension exists inside the Soul Stone, and if we operate under the theory that this place is the result of a flaw in the conjunction of the Infinity Stones one could hypothesize that this space is something similar. If we extrapolate on that theory, the doors might be symptomatic of the Space Stone, but instead of just tearing open doors into space, the Reality Stone is taking that one step further and opening doors to other realities. The influence of the Time Stone seems clear, there are people here from all different times."

He squinted, staring at...who could say.

"I'll let you both know what my spell, or, sorry, program reveals. I'll be on the lookout for Doc's frequencies. I'm guessing people are organizing expeditions into the doors to get survival goods in the meantime?"

"Have we checked under the floorboards?" Tony asked, because it was never too late or untimely to reference Poe, particularly when sitting across from a probably retired goth hobo wizard.

He picked up his cup again but didn't drink from it quite yet -- opting instead to nudge his tablet and paper both in the Doctor's direction. Notes were needed for him to even begin imagining what kind of build he was going to have to work on.

The rundown on the Stones left Tony with a few questions -- more based on what they were capable of singularly and perhaps if there were any differences between the stones in his universe and Stephen's. It seemed more like a later conversation though, admittedly. Still, he smiled a little crookedly over program instead of spell.

"Yeah, people are going on --" Tony raised his free hand like he was searching for a word to grab out of the air. "Field trips," he decided on finally. "But scavenging for things we all need seems to be going...fine. It might be better if we sorted it all out and wrote down a list of things we absolutely need. Everything's new and shiny now, but the second someone gets sick or hurt, we're up shit's creek."

She was happy to start drawing as they talked, working on the schematics and listening- sort of. "You're gonna have to explain to me about these Infinity Stones of yours. What are they? How many are there and what do they do? And what do they have to do with this place?" There she went again with all the questions.

The Doctor smirked at the mention or programs, too. She said nothing else of it, knowing better. Field trips? Was that what they were calling it?

"Definitely need to list out what we need- you should do that." She nodded to Tony as she drew. "I mean, you're their leader, right? Our leader, I guess. That's weird. " She cocked her head and inspected the first bits of her drawing. "I'm a better artist than I was before. Huh!"

As she wrote some notes, quickly scratching out the Gallifreyan symbols and switching to English, she went. on. "You need a hospital. And perhaps assign someone to be on the lookout? People are good right now, but wha' happens when someone isn't? Not sayin' it will happen, but probably need something of a plan for that, right?

"Not to mention makin' sure everyone has food and water. How're we doin' that?" She finished the first bit and slid it over to Tony. It was...complex. And just the start. A ventilation unit for what she hoped would be the equivalent of a small nuclear reactor core. She trusted him to be as good as he said he was.

Stephen took it upon himself to explain the Infinity Stones, complete with magical images and Celestials and explosions to simulate the Big Bang. Power, Mind, Space, Time, Reality, Soul. Six crystals that represent one of the cornerstones of reality, the apex of possibility without channeling extradimensional energy, challenged only by cosmic powers of a similar scale.

"The Infinity Stones are fraught with conflict, always sought by those who would wield them for their own agenda. We have prevented their union on multiple occasions. Their completion, obviously," Stephen gestured around them, "leads to cataclysm."

He banished the magical powerpoint presentation and returned his hands to his pockets.

"Food, water, generating power, medicine..." Stephen sat back down on the edge of his seat, like he wasn't going to get comfortable, "I know a lot of us are used to a lot of comforts and easy living. We need to strategize for survival now. Agricultural infrastructure, a power grid. These things take time but if we're anticipating to play the long game-- they're worth the investment. I'm a medical doctor, but we're going to need the basics like Penicillin if we encounter something more than the common cold."

Tony had to sit back a little and think about that - about the title that the Doctor was putting on him. He hadn't really considered it before, he'd just jumped in headfirst to help however he could, but he hadn't thought that had made him anyone's leader. Particularly since someone like Steve was here, too. "Maybe," he said, because it seemed like a stupid thing to question. It was best to just... take charge. He owed it to a lot of people to try his hardest.

He peeked at the Doctor's sketch even while Strange showed off with another light show. Turned out, yeah, not much was different at all about the Stones from one dimension to another. Maybe they were just a constant. Things that deserved to be put into black holes. Tony rubbed his hand over his face, sighed a little. "I'm so fucking tired of these stones," he admitted.

"Water's no problem, but I'll get people to bring back the bottled sort if they find it from now on," he said, checking a mental box. "Food is a work in progress - scavenging only does so much, I agree. So who knows anything about growing things, because I'm not that guy." The power grid he'd already taken care of. "You get me a list of the basics, Strange. You know my usual method for injury is waiting for death to make a point."

He drained his coffee cup. "And we should meet up every so often. To keep updated."

Brilliant. These stones were definitely intriguing and if they were as powerful as Strange said, they were something she'd wish to study. At a later date. If they were as dangerous as he said, then it was probably better they were hidden or kept apart. "Alright. Soooo supernatural powered stones with infinite and very dangerous potential. Understood."

Turning to Tony, she nodded. "Yes. Dr. Strange is correct about comforts. It's nice, but people are going to rely on each other to keep this place running and save. Especially as we have more and more newcomers." Though it was brilliant to see people already taking over in some regards. "Maybe we could ask others to start up gardens- I saw one already, but we'll need more. Oh! Farm-animals. Can we get farm animals?? Should we? There are benefits to veganism- I'm not a fan, but there are. I'm told."

She bit the tip of the pen and nodded to the plans. "They make sense to you? If not, I can add notes. Also should note that's just the start."

"We are fortunate enough that we haven't had to deal with threats yet, but we should be prepared. There are interdimensional entities that prey on isolated dimensions like this." Doctor Strange clucked his tongue and moved to stand. "Including the realm inside of the Soul Stone. The Sorcerer Supreme exists to defend his world from these kinds of threats. Investigating and bulwarking this place may be the best use of my particular training and talents."

"Agriculture is a baseline must for everyone. Finding a place to plant crops. Solar energy. Perhaps using the water in the pond to generate energy in some kind of high-tech water wheel? That seems to be in your wheelhouse, the both of you. We have no need for transportation, thank goodness. The town is small enough."

Strange pressed a hand against his temple, trying to think. It was getting more difficult. He was so bloody tired.

"And a dedicated medical facility. At least preparing a sterile space to receive patients and let them convalesce and receive treatment, whether magical or scientific."

"I'm already working on solar energy, what kind of amateur do you think I am, Strange?" He was a doctor too, thank you. But was apparently the only one at the table who didn't need to be reminded of the fact every few minutes. "Don't worry about the power. I've got that handled. I'll get the rest handled too. You just work on studying up on that House and hoping you don't have to do any kind of medical things." Strange was getting a little repetitive and Tony didn't miss how tired he looked, or how pressure to the temple sometimes helped. He knew the signs of not sleeping when he saw them because he lived it most always. It was best to be a little firm and then send the guy on his way for a nap. Or meditation. Or whatever it was Sorcerer Supremes did.

As for The Doctor? Well, she was perfect in every way and had clearly done nothing wrong, obviously. "Add some notes. But I think we can work on it together so maybe not to many notes. Also I'm not killing Betsy the cow for a hamburger no matter how much I wish I had one. That's not a decision I'm making."

The Doctor was still pretty bad at reading people, but she was already sending a bit of irritation from both of them, staring between them as she listened. Tony seemed on top of the basics, which was good. Strange had his things handled. She was just trying to think if she could help and how.

"Will do", she nodded, staring at the plans and sort of glad Tony had said he wouldn't go there. Yet. Twelve wouldn't have hesitated. Of course, he was far more a pragmatist than she was. Tony would have probably liked Twelve.

She had noticed how irritable Dr. Strange seemed, but the way he was drinking coffee spoke volumes. Lots and lots of coffee. She bit her tongue from making a comment and instead focussed on Tony. "I might need to scout out materials, and the formula for the injection cores are complex. What experience do you have with alien technology?" Again, she was just learning both men and piecing together their skills. "I'm good with buildin' things. If you need help, too." Just a means of keeping busy for now.

Strange could feel his limitations closing in. The lack of sleep, the things he saw when he closed his eyes, the withdrawal from the opium...he could only keep it at bay for so long with the magic he had at his disposal. And the last thing he wanted to do was to be perceived as weak by his colleagues.

"You two are the experts when it comes to technology. I don't think I will be of any help in that arena. Why don't I return home and ruminate further on these frequencies that the Doctor brought up?" He smiled briefly before his mouth returned to a neutral line, much like a rubber band snapping back to form after being stretched.

"Luckily, there are plenty of empowered individuals who can create energy at the drop of a hat to jump-start a generator or experiment. Although I'm not sure Thor is exactly a student of the scientific method, hmm?" Another wry smile, this time the joke was accompanied by a flick of his eyebrows.

"We will get through this yet, doctors. Historically we have an excellent track record for problem-solving. At least this time nobody's in agonizing torture at the hands of demons or dark gods, hmm? Feels like we have all the time in the world."

"All the time in the world," Tony echoed, although it wasn't necessarily in agreement. Somewhere out there the future was happening without him. Time was moving along and the longer they waited, the less likely it would be for him to get back on track.

Then again, he didn't know if he wanted to be there anyway, so maybe Strange had a point. There was nothing terrible happening, nothing pressing. They'd work it out while making the least amount of mistakes possible, hopefully.

"Well," he said, more in sardonic humor than because he felt he had any real control of the situation. "Meeting adjourned, Doctors. Until next time?"
