Who: Steve Rogers (mcu) and Carol Danvers
What: Captaining
Where: Toward the trees
When: Wednesday afternoon
Rating: Low I'd say

It wasn't that he was avoiding the doors, people were going through them and returning, it seemed safe enough and a good way to expand on what they had. There were things Tony needed to upgrade the systems he was working on, tools and materials they'd need to make them more comfortable but Steve hadn't ventured through yet. There was actually plenty to do there to keep him busy, people were arriving and Steve wanted to make them feel comfortable. Of course there was also that he wanted to meet everyone and get a feel for them, so if there was a problem it didn't take him by surprise.

Not to mention Steve would be kidding himself if he didn't say there were moments of the quiet life that he enjoyed. That morning cups of coffee in hand he and Tony had walked along the water, not saying much just wordlessly taking the long way back to their house. There wasn't anywhere to rush to or worry about and it was quiet.

But Steve's latest project was a gym, so he'd come out to find some good sized trees to become the corners of a good old fashioned boxing ring. He'd already sized up a few, getting them the same size would help down the track.

Carol had been settling in alright. She'd met a few residents, but not all. It felt like people were scattered or busy with their own projects much of the time, and while the town was small, people generally kept to themselves if they were new. Which most of them were. But Carol wasn't one to shy away from people naturally. She wasn't exactly looking for friends, but it wasn't in her nature to sit still and twiddle her thumbs. She needed to be kept busy. Otherwise, she would go stir crazy.

Unfortunately for her, there wasn't much need for help at the moment and that just left her with two things to do. Sit and think (something which she wasn't a big fan of) or get out and do something. Right now, that something was a jog. Carol didn't exactly need to work out, but the physical activity helped her to clear her thoughts. And it was a good way to get to know her new surroundings. She'd even been lucky to get a pair of decent sweats from Jan (who somehow seemed to always have what she needed), so why not put them to good use?

She had decided to take the scenic route through the woods when she came across anyone else. But, there he was standing amongst the trees and seeming to be lost in some sort of thought. She slowed down, cocking her head and realizing after a moment who she was looking at. "Well if it isn't Captain America himself."

Carol would be kidding herself if she denied being just a little bit excited about having a childhood hero standing before her. Of course, she recognized him from the old movie reels and photos. But, she kept her cool on the outside as she walked over.

"Carol Danvers. We met on the communications system." She resisted the urge to salute, holding out a hand and hoping that would come across as somehow less awkward.

Steve knew when someone was coming, it was hard to sneak up on him and he knew that whoever was coming wasn't trying to do that. When she slowed Steve turned, especially when she knew him by name. Well by one of his names. He'd spent a lot of time under the ice and he'd missed a lot, only to come back and then end up a wanted criminal, so there was lots that he'd missed. Like Carol.

She introduced herself as she approached and Steve's smile widened as he held out his hand to meet her in the middle. "Carol, yes, it's good to meet you," Steve said, as genuine as the day was long. Steve loved hearing stories like Carol's, how she'd become a pilot, after living in the 1940's he'd seen how hard Peggy had worked for the respect that should have been given to her freely. Women like Peggy and Carol, well they should have been the ones on the television and in the comics.

As much as he tried to greet everyone he also didn't want to give the false idea he was somehow in charge. It wasn't a big place and in time he'd met most people just by going about his day.

"I'm just looking for a few trees about the same size, we're building a boxing ring to go in the gym," Steve explained so that it didn't look like he was out here alone talking to nature.

"The pleasure is mine, Sir." Old habits died hard, but Carol also held Steve Rogers with a special sort of respect. Even if it was hard to believe that this might be the actual Steve Rogers from her universe. He at least looked like he had on the reels.

Steve explained what he was doing and Carol's eyes traveled up the trees, nodding. "A boxing ring?" She grinned. "And exactly who are you going to box?" She figured he was just doing what she was trying to do; keeping busy and productive when there was nothing else immediately around. She could see a gym being useful, and even the boxing ring idea. She just wasn't sure there were enough people around who would take part.

"Need any help?" That seemed to be her catchphrase these days. She'd probably live to regret it eventually.

"If you go calling me Sir I'll have to start calling you Ma'am," Steve warned, but it wasn't serious all in good humor. He did have a habit of calling women ma'am even after learning their names but he tried his best not to sound too formal. Still, old habits.

He laughed as he shrugged, eyeing the trees again. "Anyone who's game really! I like teaching people and I can take a hit or two," Steve said. He'd taught Tony a lot of hand to hand combat over the years and he figured with a ring they might get back in it. Not to mention he felt like there would be a few others who might enjoy it. "Are you volunteering?"

Steve didn't need help, not really, but her offer sounded much like something he'd offer himself. Besides wanting help was just as good. "Sure," he agreed. "Think those two look the same size?" Steve asked as he pointed toward two of the trees he'd been considering.

"Touche." She couldn't argue with his point, clearly warming up to him. It was funny, he even held his head up and talked like a man out of time. Even Carol noticed that. Maybe people just got used to it after being around him long enough.

"I'm sure you could." She didn't mean it as a comment on his physique, though it might come across that way to anyone else hearing it. She just happened to know of the legend and the stories about what he had been able to do in the war. "Volunteering for the ring?" Okay, that earned a look and she laughed. "I didn't know you were willing to hit a girl, Steve. But...yeah, maybe. If you think you're up for a challenge."

She nodded at the trees as he pointed to them. They looked close enough. "Good pick. Don't suppose you have a saw? Axe? Or were you just going to rip them out of the ground with your bare hands?"

Steve could be a little formal, he was shy really more than anything else. It took time for him to actually get comfortable with people enough to joke and relax into himself. Not to mention he liked to keep layers of himself hidden, project being a soldier without giving strangers too much information about the man.

Part of bonding as a team always involved some good natured sparring, it wasn't always about winning as it was about bettering yourself or someone else. Although sometimes it was absolutely about winning. "I don't hit anyone unless they know it's coming," Steve said quickly. "And I love a challenge." Steve had no qualms about a good fair fight, woman or not.

"The last ten I took down gave me a few splinters so I bought this," he deadpanned before reaching for the axe. "You want to swing and I'll catch it?"

"Where's the fun in that?" She had always been a fan of sparring. It was a way to clear her head and focus on a single task. Of course, the last time she'd had a sparring partner, it hadn't ended well in the long run. She tried not to dwell on that these days. "And I love to challenge, so this should be fun."

She stared at the ax, considering for a second. She'd gotten pretty good at being precise with her photon blast, but she wasn't sure whether or not Steve would appreciate splinters going anywhere. Better stick to the ax for now. She picked it up and walked over to the tree, nodding to make sure it was the right one before she began to chop. It only two-three blows before it started coming down and she waited for him to catch it before moving to the other one. "So...how far along are you on this gym of yours?"

"I'm more interested in fair than fun," Steve said, because of course he was. It wasn't that he didn't like to win, he did, everyone did. It's that he didn't like to fight unless it was in good sportsmanship. He would have far preferred to be unnecessary than to be needed. "Any time you like, all the more reason to get this thing finished!"

She was strong, more than fit strong, super human strong and Steve was now even more sure of the challenge she would provide. The three came down nice and clean and Steve caught it before guiding it slowly to the ground. "Not very, just past planning and into collecting what's needed," Steve explained. Anything to keep busy and running only did so much, even if he couldn't swing at a punching bag with full force, it was a nice distraction.

Carol was impressed with how easily Steve caught each tree, clearly measuring him up in a way. She hadn’t assumed he would be an easy contestant, but she also realized he was probably stronger than he might look to the naked eye. Good to know. “Got it. So you already have the equipment? Nails, hammer?” She walked toward him, lifting the axe up and carrying it behind her shoulders, holding the handle with both hands and feeling quite at home like that.

“This brings me back. I used to help my brother with his projects when we were kids. Dad never really liked that.” She didn’t look upset st the notion. If anything, she looked pleased with herself. Carol had long since given up caring about what her father thought.

“Need help with those?” She was looking st the large trunks, wondering if he wanted to bail them as is or cut them up first.

The trees weren't huge and it was pretty easy to use the way they fell to his advantage, but it was true, Steve packed more of a punch than he might appear to. "I do, I was the first here I think, so found most things there were to find. Happy to share, mind you," he said as he leaned over the fallen log.

"I was never allowed to help with things like this when I was a kid, my asthma," Steve explained. "Had to sit and watch, help where I could." Which wasn't really anywhere, he knew better than to get in the way. Lucky he'd got a brother in the end, even if he wasn't by blood.

"I think we take the tops off, no need to take them with us, leave them here to compost," Steve said. "Then we'll do the rest back in town, Tony will have come up with something to make the job easier I'm sure."

"You were the first?" That was interesting. "How long until other people showed up?" Carol could imagine how she would react in a similar situation. She might have just gone through a door and not come back out before she realized there could be an issue there. Steve seemed to have more willpower than that. Too emotional. Yeah, that description still rubbed her the wrong way, even if it had some truth to it.

She nodded as he described himself, still having trouble imagining a scrawny version of the good Captain. "Sitting on the sidelines is the worst part."

She moved to the tops of the trees to do the job, remarking as she did. "Tony Stark? Which one?" She was still wrapping her head about two of the same guy, but different ages and it seemed even slightly different personalities.

"How do you guys know each other? Outside of here, I mean."

"I don't know, I mean I didn't see anyone else for a few days? They could have been here though. Then people started arriving," Steve explained. Honestly being here alone hadn't been the worst thing, he'd actually enjoyed a little solitude and quiet. Living on the run had meant living in close quarters and Steve had slept most of the first few days, utterly exhausted from what he'd gone through on earth.

Sitting on the sidelines had been Steve's entire life. With sports or games, he was relatively smart but not the smartest, so being invisible, well Steve knew what that was like. "I sure don't miss it," Steve said honestly. "But it taught me how to take a punch."

As she took off the tops Steve held the trees steady and then moved them into a pile so they could lift them. "The older one, he's from my own universe," Steve explained before he paused. How did he go about that one? The last thing he wanted to do was get into it, although at some point they would need to, that point wasn't now.

"We were on the same team, went up against Thanos and, well," Steve shrugged his shoulders. "We'd won a few before then together."

Carol gave a nod as she grabbed hold of at least one of the trees to help. "So...you were already a team? How did you meet?" It was strange to her that they had somehow found each other. "Or was it put together by some secret government organization?"

There was a sly grin as she said it, pretending that it was a joke. She half-suspected it was that was exactly what happened. But then, her voice grew more serious.

"There were other threats? What kind?"

The Avengers, it was powerful, it had been something created out of necessity but they'd stayed together for more than that. Steve was stronger when he was beside Tony and Nat, they made the team better and a man was only as good as the people who stood beside him. "Yeah, we were, put together by an Agency, or should I say a man really. Fury." Steve explained.

That face told Steve there was more to Carol than what he knew, but it would come out in time. It was easy to like her and trust her enough with a few harmless details. Besides he'd seen her bring down that tree.

"Aliens, world destroying robots, just the usual," Steve said, with a shrug.

Fury. She froze for a second, staring at Steve as he mentioned that name since it clearly had some meaning to her. "Fury." She didn't ask. She knew. "Figures he was behind this." She actually smiled a little sadly and shook his head. "It was SHIELD, wasn't it?"

And then he mentioned Aliens and she grew serious. "When did aliens come to Earth? What kind?" She had forgotten the trees for now. There was a strange chill in the back of her neck. Fury had the pager this whole time. He'd only just contacted her. It was one thing if a mad man or a group of madmen threatened a place, but aliens were another thing entirely.

"Fury was on the verge of retirement when I knew him. What changed?"

Steve wasn't surprised to see that recognition there, he'd had a feeling that things here could be a little bit connected. She wielded that ax with a strength that was familiar to him, because he felt it himself. If Fury had found him, like he'd let Carol slip through his grasp. "Isn't he always?" Steve asked with a raise of his eyebrows. SHIELD had fallen, but Steve still trusted Fury even if they hadn't quite been on the same team. "Of course."

He could hear that concern, the weight of responsibility and Steve raised his eyebrows at her. "Long story, there was a Thunder God and one of mischief, some Chitauri made a mess of New York City," Steve explained although it wasn't much of an explanation, they needed more time and a drink for that.

"I guess he saw something that made him want to put together a new plan to protect earth," he said.

"The Chitauri?" She knew of them, though she hadn't seen them before. There were legends about a former titan going mad and attacking worlds. Carol had been so busy fighting the Kree that she hadn't had time to investigate too closely, but now she realized that she should have.

Carol sighed and stared off into the distance, away from Steve. She was thinking before she looked back at him to ask, "What did you guys call yourselves again? Avengers? Was that his idea?"

Because if it was, Carol felt responsible for all of this. If Fury had put this team together because she left, then failed to call her when something as big as this Thanos came to Earth, why give him the damned pager in the first place? She would have been back in an instant had she known of alien threats to her homeworld. If she saw Fury again, she'd definitely be chewing him out.

In Carol's mind, she would see him again. She didn't think she could deal with the thought that he and so many others were killed because she wasn't there to act. No. She'd make this right.

"....I knew Fury before he even knew there were aliens in the universe, let alone ones that could threaten Earth. Back when I was with Starforce." That was another life entirely. She sighed. "He didn't seem too worried when I left, but I'm starting to wonder about that. My callsign when I was a pilot in the Airforce was Avenger. It seems too strange to be a coincidence."

"That's them, but we dealt with it, they didn't see Tony coming, that was for sure," Steve said and the pride was warm in his voice.

"That was the name of his project, The Avengers Initiative," Steve explained. The thing with Fury was there was always more than what was on the surface, he was a man with a number of plans and he played everyone, telling them when he wanted them to know. It was for the perceived greater good but it hadn't gone all that well, but Steve could relate to that.

They were putting things together now, Fury had clearly had the idea after meeting Carol and seeing what she could do. When the Chitauri had come to earth they'd handled it, as a team and Steve was proud of that, but Thanos? Well it hadn't seemed to matter how many of them there was, it hadn't been enough.

"I guess he named us after you then," Steve said with a little smile. "At the very least you qualify for membership, so welcome aboard I guess." What had happened was terrible and it felt like everything was his own fault, his responsibility. But at that point in time, in that place, there wasn't much they could do.

Except make do.

It sounded like Steve had a story there, and Carol filed it away in the back of her mind to ask for the full details later. What had Tony done to beat off an army of Chitauri, she wondered?

The Avengers Initiative. It sounded like something Fury would come up with. Leave it to him to make things more complicated than they had to be. She'd given him a pager for a reason- she had expected to be called sooner, especially if there was an alien threat. But, of course, he would have to come up with another solution. Maybe they wouldn't have even been here in this place if he'd just hit the button the first time.

Membership? She smirked a little as she realized what he was saying and cocked her head to one side. "Wait, does that mean I get to be the captain, now? Since the team was, technically, named after me? That's how it works, right?" She was kidding. Sort of.

There would be time later to exchange war stories and Steve wanted to, but maybe with a beer and a few more people, Tony was better with the details making them sound all impressive and Steve was more likely to downplay. They'd get there.

A grin spread across his face as she asked if she was The Captain and he gave a half shrug, half nod. "There's room for more than one Captain you know," he pointed out. "You seem at least reasonably qualified for the job and all," Steve added as he gave her a very quick once over. "Besides I've not really been Captain of much recently, so sure, I think the job's yours."

Steve gathered a few logs over his shoulder ready to get them back to there intended destination. "Especially with all your help here, how could I refuse?"
