Snape's possible career post Hogwarts

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hi all. I think last week was successful as far as responses go. So this week, I'd like to know what Severus planned to do after Hogwarts, before he decided to make a career of Death Eating. We know he took his OWLs seriously, he seems to have been gifted with both potion making and spell creation. He's a dab hand at Dark Arts and healing them. I don't think teaching would have been his choice. Although, at a higher level, perhaps.

What sort of profession would Snape have gone into after Hogwarts, Dark Lord notwithstanding?

How Powerful is Severus Snape?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hello all! Here is the first official question of the week. [info]cardigrl wanted to know . . .

Just how powerful is Snape magically? And how competent a wizard? Some early fanon explained his derision of wand-waving by showing him as basically incompetent at anything other than potions. And there was his frustration at not being able to get the Marauder's Map to produce (which the gals at snapecast had a good laugh about, as I recall, as a good example of his cluelessness). But then fanon seemed to move to a powerful!Snape, when we saw his ability to do nonverbal spells (and how much of that was wandless?) and his cleverness in creating spells while still a teenager. And anyone who can manage to cover a class of hostile kidlets equipped with fire and explosive materials without serious injuries must have at least some power. So, where does he rank on the power/competence scale? And to what extent does one depend on the other in the Wizarding world?

To this I will only add that Snape owned Harry in HBP, but of course, Harry is only a kid, however, he's also one of the luckiest and managed to get away from nearly everyone he's ever tangled with so . . .

Canon/fanon Snape questions

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
As you may have noticed I have been asking canon questions on Fridays. Well, [info]sylvanawood and I were thinking of making it a regular feature at [info]snapedom. But I will also try to come up with fanon questions too. So everything from where did Severus spend his summers while teaching at Hogwarts (Spinner's End? Somewhere else?) to why does he always smell like sandalwood and bitter herbs (Don't all the Potterverse men smell like Sandalwood?).

So, to start off-do you have any questions like that about Snape? I'm going to collect suggestions and post them once a week, probably Tuesdays. (Cross-posted to my journal.)

These posts will be shorter and less involved than meta or essays but I think it will encourage some interesting and hopefully fun conversations.

My rants on the Lexicon trial

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I posted 2 rants on my journal regarding recent info about the Lexicon trial. Although it's general JKR news and not Snape-specific, Sylvana gave me permission to make a similar post in the past here on the Snapedom LJ, so I'm assuming this okay. If not, let me know, and I'll delete this post.

The first rant deals with JKR's testimony, in which she says that the information on the Lexicon is "sloppy" and full of errors, and that it was not "of immense use," despite the fact that she's previously stated that she used the Lexicon for fact-checking in the past.

The second rant (titled "Uh, so now it's illegal to dislike the epilogue?") deals with Steve Vander Ark's testimony, and how WB's lawyer actually questioned Steve about whether he liked the epilogue (see my post for the context).

Forgot to mention that the rants are also cross-posted to LJ here and here.

Eileen and Tobias

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've posted a couple of canon questions at my ij about Snape's parents if you want to gander at it. Although Severus Judge Turpin doesn't like gandering.

. . . How did these two meet? Why did Eileen marry outside the wizarding world? Did Tobias know Eileen was a witch? And where are they now?

Steve Vander Ark being sued over Lexicon book

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Sorry for the cross-post to those who are on my Friends list. This was HP-related news, but not specifically related to Snape, and I wasn't sure if it was okay to post it here, so I went ahead and posted a rant on my personal journal. However, Sylvana gave me permission to post it here at Snapedom, and I thought some of you might be interested. Feel free to ignore if you've already seen this.

When I saw this article on the Leaky Cauldron about Steve Vander Ark of the Harry Potter Lexicon being sued, along with his publisher, by Warner Bros. and JKR, I was shocked. I've never met him, but he seems like a nice guy and die-hard HP fan from his Pottercast "Canon Conundrum" segments, various interviews, and his posts on the Lexicon. Obviously no one but a fan would have put such a tremendous amount of work into building the Lexicon. And JKR has praised the Lexicon in the past, given them a fansite award, even admitted that she used it to check up on facts sometimes when she was writing.

Last night I went looking for a certain fan story I enjoyed, but the link was broken. So I went to the author's blog and, what do you know, she had taken down all of her fanfics, basically because they disagreed with Joanne Rowling's ideas about the nature of Severus Snape, and in her estimation Joanne Rowling is a genius, so she'd rather not be reminded that she ever got it all SO WRONG, thanks very much.

How ironic: she's a much better writer than JKR. DH was utter crap: Rowling wrote herself into a corner throughout the span of the first six books, and then relied on several Old Saws to cut herself an exit, right through the wall she was backed up against. Unfortunately, it was a load-bearing wall, and by the end of DH the entire structure had collapsed.

It troubles me that so many people would rather suck up to an author who got most of her characters' psychology, not to mention the morality, all wrong, than to think for themselves.

Of course, she's rich and popular and rather attractive, so it fits in neatly with her philosophy of life. Sad, really.

A Response to JKR

I am thoroughly fed-up, as I am sure most of you are, of JKR's constant bad-mouthing of Snape any chance she gets to be on a public platform. Is she taking subversive delight in ticking us off? Instead of going into a rant however, I thought of posting this poem, an excerpt from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Edward Fitzgerald, which seems to aptly sum up my feelings on the issue.

Question about Snape and purebloods

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Original poster: geri_chan

Something has been bugging me ever since Half-Blood Prince came out: did Snape's fellow Slytherins and Death Eaters know that he was a half-blood, or did they think that he was a pureblood? The Prince's Tale chapter in DH seems to indicate that he was readily accepted into Slytherin--welcomed by Lucius Malfoy and befriended by Avery and the other budding Death Eaters. I can't see them welcoming a half-blood into their ranks so easily, but wouldn't they have been able to tell by his last name that he probably wasn't a pureblood?

A Question and an Appeal

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

The other day I was contemplating the new information Deathly Hallows gave us on Snape, and I found myself puzzled at an odd chink in the chronology of events in Snape's schooldays:

- In Prisoner of Azkaban, we learned that Sirius lured Snape to the Shrieking Shack on a night with a full moon when he was sixteen.

- In Order of the Phoenix, we learned that James hung Snape upside down, and Snape called Lily a Mudblood, in fifth year when they were taking their OWLs, and would have been fifteen.

- In Deathly Hallows, it transpires in "The Prince's Tale" that the Shrieking Shack incident took place before the Worst Memory.

What do you make of this? I would very much like to know your opinion on how to deal with this. Which do you think is the logical sequence, and why? Or how would you explain away the apparent contradiction?

On another note (cross-posted to my own journal):

In their latest episode, the staff at [info]snapecast has asked their listeners to compose epitaphs for Snape. I am really not good at this sort of thing, but many of you are, and therefore I would ask you to please, please contribute a short crazy poem or a snarky line or two.

Send your epitaphs to severus (at) snapecast (dot) com; or if you like to send a soundbite, you can phone Snapecast through Skype; their username is (surprise!) "snapecast". The deadline is 11 August.
