“Hello, and welcome to Wizarding Wireless’ Words with Winolda Wimple. I’m Winolda Wimple and I am pleased to welcome a very special guest back to the studio. Rita Skeeter, senior correspondent for the Daily Prophet, columnist for Witch’s Weekly and noted author is joining us today to talk about her newest book The Secrets and Soul of Severus Snape. Rita, welcome!”
“Hello Winolda! It’s lovely to see you again!”
“Likewise, Rita. It seems just yesterday that we were talking about The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. You’re certainly prolific!”
“Well the stories are there to be told, Winolda, and it’s my job to convey them to the wizarding public.”
“And how fortunate we are that you do just that Rita. So tell me, in the aftermath of the war and the death of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, why did you chose to focus on Severus Snape rather than Harry Potter or Remus Lupin or any of the other seemingly more deserving subjects?”
“First of all, Winolda, You-Knew-Who is dead, so let’s refer to him in the past tense please. And, to answer your question, there are more books in the works. The Secrets and Soul of Severus Snape is the first of many books that my editor and I are planning and both Harry Potter and Remus Lupin will get their due. But I would disagree with you that Snape is undeserving of a deeper look. Why, just a bit of digging led me to some of the most interesting information I’ve ever run across. And let me tell you, I’ve seen it all!”
“I’m sure you have, Rita! So tell us, what did you find?”
“Well, did you know that Severus Snape appears to have been a double agent? I’ve found evidence that he passed information to both sides and maybe even supported the Order by giving them advance warning when He-Who-Was-Not-Named was planning attacks!”
“You’re kidding! But Hogwarts under Snape was a Death Eater training ground! My daughter has told me about it, how he let the Carrows teach Cruciatus and make the students practice it on each other!”
“Remember he had to keep up his image, Winolda. You-Knew-Who watched his every movement. But consider this- the death rate at Durmstrang, which was under Death Eater control for much longer than Hogwarts, was over 25 children per year. When you subtract the poor dears that died in the Battle of Hogwarts, not a single student perished under Snape’s reign.”
“You don’t say! Well, I’ll be checking those facts myself, but I must say it gives a person something to think about.”
“Indeed it does. But the man was hardly light and kittens. I’ve unearthed evidence of an unhealthy relationship between him and the Malfoy family, both father and son- that’s in Chapter Four. In Chapter Seven I discuss Snape’s love-hate relationship with Harry Potter, who he tutored in Occlumency during Harry’s fifth year and whose life he saved multiple times during Harry’s school years.”
“What kind of unhealthy relationship, Rita?”
“Now now, Winolda, you’ll have to read the book to find out about that!”
“Yes, of course, but perhaps you’ll give us a bit more of a preview? No? What about Snape’s motives for his double agent role?”
“Well, that appears to tie back to his complex relationship with Harry Potter. I’ve dug through several years worth of Muggle and Magical residence records and interviewed several people and what I found was most surprising. Severus Snape lived in the same neighborhood as Lily Evans- Harry Potter’s mother!”
“You don’t say! Did they know each other?”
“Indeed they did. Not only did they know each other, but they played together regularly and young Severus seems to have been quite enamored with the little Miss Lily! On pages 98-124 I’ve reproduced some of the notes the two of them wrote to each other, starting from the age of nine all the way until their fifth year at Hogwarts. If I may quote from page 111:
“Dear Sev, You were simply awful in charms today, I don’t know how you can stand to be around those people you call friends. Meet me at our normal spot after lights out tonight? I have something to show you. Lily
“Lily, I was not awful and you know it; I only give what I receive in return. Look to your own friends for blame. What is it that you have to show me? Is this like last time? I’d rather like that. Severus”
“Oh my! An inter-house relationship, how juicy! And when did Lily begin dating James Potter?”
“Sometime during their sixth year, though the exact date is unclear. Severus never got over losing his childhood love.”
“How very tragic!”
“It’s extremely tragic, Winolda. Severus Snape returned to the side of light in a futile attempt to save his Lily and continued in his dual role to try to protect her son.”
“And how did he die, Rita?”
“Ah, well, I’m afraid for that one you’ll have to buy the book. But I will say this- he died abandoned by both of the men he served, sacrificed by one and manipulated by the other.”
“My Rita, I may actually read this one! The station will get an advance copy, I hope?”
“Of course, Winolda!”
“Wonderful! The Secrets and Soul of Severus Snape by Rita Skeeter, folks, in stores starting Monday! Thanks for coming in today, Rita.”
“My pleasure, Winolda.”
“And up next on Words with Winolda Wimple we’ll be speaking with Kingsley Shacklebolt, Minister of Magic, about the continuing Death Eater trials and the ongoing attempts to capture the remaining followers of He-Who- … He-Who-Was-Not-Named. Stay tuned, more after these words from our sponsors!”
