Hi everyone! I'm Samantha and I'm the new kid on the block. :) I'm a 24-year-old upstate NY native working as an Education Coordinator for a local museum, and I'm bringing you Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan of Kathryn Stockett's amazing novel The Help. I haven't seen the film yet but I can't wait!
Skeeter (no one calls her Eugenia except her mother) was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and is contemporary to the game timeline. She has never fit the mold of the perfect young Southern woman of means, although she tried for many years to be someone she was not. Skeeter recently came into her own through the writing and publishing of Help, a book about the lives and stories of several black housekeepers in Jackson. For obvious reasons, the book was published anonymously, but Skeeter has learned a lot through her journey and is no longer afraid of the person she really is. She's opinionated and always tries to push boundaries -- to test ideas to their limit and prod them for weaknesses and flaws. Help was a huge success and scandal, but Skeeter is realizing her dream of being a writer when it's popularity earned her a job with Stein Publishing in Manhattan. Now, away from the stifling constraints of what is "proper" in the South, Skeeter is excited and nervous about what lies ahead for her. You can read more about her personality and background here!
