Who: Kaylee, Neville, and anyone else who wants to join!
When: Friday evening
Where: Central Park - between the great hill and harlem moor. Right about where 105th and 7th would intersect.
What: crash-landing a shuttle and being very very very confused!
Rating: Low
Status: closed/openish!

It was impressive how much the ship could fall into disrepair when Kaylee was out of commission so to speak. The wound had left her sore for a few weeks afterward, but with the doctor's help - and was she ever pleased the doctor was staying - she'd gotten back to her feet in no time at all. After making sure Serenity wouldn't drift off aimless, she set off to fix the comm link in the other shuttle. Inara's had been fixed up no problem, but this one was proving just a bit trickier. As she crossed the two copper wires, the door hissed shut and the shuttle shot out of Serenity. "Cap'n!" Kaylee yelled into the comm stupidly before realizing that she hadn't fixed it. No matter, she'd just pilot her back and face his wrath and everyone's snickers when she redocked.

The shuttle seemed to have a mind of its own and it careened towards the nearest planet, which Kaylee was shocked to see looked almost exactly like the maps of Earth-That-Was. How had they managed to terraform it like that? The shuttle wasn't turning around, and oh, of course it was heading for the city center. The shuttle had enough manoeuvrability so that she could direct it towards the only green area she could see. The wasn't a docking pad to be had anywhere around, and Kaylee wondered if this was a failed planet of some sort. No matter. The Cap'n would come. Angry, but he'd come.

Landing wasn't nearly as tricky as she thought it would be, and she glided down, skimming over a body of water and coming to rest near a large open-topped hill meadow area. There were some picnic tables about. First thing she did was open the control panel and see what was up. The haltmac coil had fried. No matter. It was an easy enough fix. She stepped cautiously out of the shuttle, wincing as she saw all these people looking about at her.

"I'm lookin' for a haltmac coil," she said, addressing the first person she saw, a rather nice looking blonde man. "So if you can just point me in the right direction, I can be outta your way again real soon." Granted, the Cap'n would probably come before that, but that was okay. She needed someone to pay for the coil.

Neville wandered in the park, looking at the different plants and smiling. It wasn't so bad, the park. No magical plants that he'd come across, but he held out hope. It wasn't so bad, living in Queens with a couple of strange people. I mean, it was a bit awkward, but it wasn't half bad.

He looked up in time to see a strange sort of machine flying overhead, frowning. He hadn't seen one of those before. He'd seen the aeroplanes, but they didn't look like this. This looked like a hunk of strange metals all put together as haphazardly as possible. He walked over towards where the machine was gliding to a landing in the distance. Maybe it was for the World Fair?

He raised an eyebrow when a pretty (if grease covered) girl clamored out of the machine. When she started talking to him about some coil, however, he was bewildered. "I, uh, I'm sorry. A what? I don't- what's a haymack coil?"

"Haltmac," she corrected grinning. She brushed a strand of hair out of her face and looked around. Seemed this grassy area was the thing separating two developments. Though looking around, there was some developments on th' other side of the grassy area too. She couldn't see the final direction - looked like the grassy area just went on an' on.

"Where'd I land, anyways?" she asked. "Ain't like none of the planets I've seen before. Y'got some nice development here!" She circled in place, coming back around to grin at the man again. "Just take me where I can get some engine parts then. They should have it, just a common part'n all."

"Haltmac?" Neville shook his head, frowning. He knew he wasn't really a master of muggle things yet, but he was fairly certain he'd never heard of a haltmac coil. Maybe he had and he didn't remember. But judging by the group of people who didn't seem to be displaced in time who were looking just as confused, he guessed she wasn't from around here.

"This is Central Park. New York City. In New York? In the United States, on Earth?" He smiled nervously as she grinned at him. Girls weren't really Nev's strong suit. "Uhm, I don't know about engine parts. I don't know anything, really."

The crazy man was saying crazy things to her, but everyone else around was nodding. Some people were peeing at the shuttle, but most were drifting away. Like she wasn't important. In the grand scheme of things, she really probably wasn't, but Kaylee couldn't imagine not helpin' someone who'd crashed and just needed a simple part!

"Earth-that-Was don't exist no more," she told him. "So this is either some sorta re-enactment or ta me da, I'm in hell." She swallowed. "We was flyin' outta Boros headin' anywhere, I guess, and I was just fixin' a few things. We wasn't near any planets, and I think I know all of 'em by now." She was getting more and more nervous. She looked around again. No sign of the Cap'n. He should be here by now.

"Okay," she said quietly, her face crumpling. "D'you maybe have a comm link I could use to contact a Firefly? It's my ship and my Cap'n'll be all worried about me, specially if he can't find the shuttle. I think the radar's been shot on her too, I don't know, but if you could get me to a mechanic shop and then maybe a comm link. She'll be safe here, you think, yeah? Ain't nothin' worth takin' outta her anyway. I can lock her up good and all unless there's a dock? I didn't see none when I was comin' in."

"E-Earth that was? You're on Earth. This isn't a re-enactment. What does that mean, that ta thing?" He was getting nervous, almost unconsciously stepping backwards as she became more obviously upset. She must be a new arrival. But she was also still a woman- a pretty woman, and she was sad and confused, and- "I'm sorry? This is- this is New York City in America, in the year 1964."

Her face crumpled, and so did he. "Look, I'm- I'm Neville Longbottom. What's your name? Can I get you something? Something that isn't a coil or a- a comm link? How did you get from here to a ship? From a ship to here, I mean?" He didn't understand most of what she was saying, but he felt bad for her- he was probably the worst person to run into when you first landed. Ginny was one thing, he could explain things in terms he knew she'd understand. But this girl- he didn't even know where- or when it was possible for her to have come from.

She laughed as he spoke. This had to be a joke. "1964?" she said. "No, it's pretty solidly 2517. You don't speak none of th'other language? Shuh muh. I'm sorry. How far from the Central planets are we? Some of them's the one's I never been to."

It was hard not to take a soft likin' to the man. Maybe they didn't get visitors very often. "Kaylee. Frye. And a mechanic shop'll do just fine, don't worry none about the technical stuff." She frowned, unsure if she should tell him, but he might be able to help her get into contact with everyone on Serenity. "I was fixin' the comm links when somethin' went wrong and I was trapped inside. Couldn't steer her none, that's all gone too, but I can do a little turnin' and stuff. Didn't see a dock anywhere, so I just put 'er down here." She clapped her hands, "So! A mechanic shop, then? And I'll be outta your way right quick."

Oh, she was definitely new. "I'm sorry- I'm sorry, Miss Frye, but this is 1964. I'm not- from around here either. More than the accent might give away. I was- travelling. In the year 2006. And then I ended up here. I don't speak any other language, no." He smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring way. "I-I know it sounds mad, but you're on Earth, in New York City, in 1964."

He knew nothing about what she was babbling about, but she did talk rather fast, and she seemed to think she would be able to leave quickly. "Miss Frye- Kaylee, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you aren't going to be able to leave."

She shook her head, "Y'can't time travel. Nothin' goes faster than the speed of light. Not even an Alliance cruiser." She faltered at his smile. "1964?" she asked. "Before Earth-that-Was got all used up?"

Her next words caused her eyes to go round with fear. "Y'can't," she said, backing up 'til she was against the shuttle. "Cap'n'll kill you for nappin' me." She hoped it came out sounding a lot more brave than she felt. She'd heard stories, border planets that had very loose interpretations of the law, lonely men needing wives an' other things.

Simon had heard about the crash of the 'strange plane thing' not so very far from the hospital, and his first thought was River. That'd she'd somehow tried to find him and made it here. It was ridiculous, he knew; if she was here, it wasn't because she'd done anything to get here. He didn't think the place worked that way.

Still, he'd hunted down his supervisor and with the tracing paper thin excuse of going out to look for injuries (though surely any would have been reported by now), Simon headed out to go see what was really going on out there. It was probably just luck he'd even heard about this at all; a chance conversation in a hallway he was passing through.

He recognized the shuttle; he'd seen it often enough, hadn't he? "River," he whispered as he started to look around to see which of Serenity's crew had crash-landed in 1964. He followed the sound of voices through the dispersing crowd, and was simultaneously relieved and disappointed to see it was Kaylee, and she was apparently unhurt. He was sorry she was stuck here now like he was, but glad to see her here, and alive.

"Kaylee," he called softly to try to get her attention, though he did nod to the other person she was talking with so he wouldn't seem quite so rude for interrupting their conversation.

Neville quickly backed away from the terrified girl. "Miss Frye, I'm sorry. I'm not- I'm not going to hurt you. I wouldn't hurt you, I wouldn't hurt anyone. I haven't- I wouldn't- I'm not-" He found himself stumbling over his words, tripping up in his rush to explain himself. He didn't know what to do, or how to explain what had happened.

"I promise, I swear, this is Earth. Earth, 1964. Lo-look, I-" He frantically checked his pockets, wishing and hoping he'd bought a paper that day. Of course I didn't. That would have been too easy, wouldn't it.. He held his hands up, out slightly and raised, in the universal sign of surrender. "Look, I don't have any weapons. I'm not going to hurt you, Miss Frye, I swear that to you." When a well dressed young man in what appeared to be a doctor's uniform appeared and recognized her, he let out a sigh of relief.

He was one of the more curiouser 'bad guys' she'd ever come across. And he seemed to be doing a really bad job at it. "Kaylee," she said, rubbing her palms together. She was relaxing a little. No one this terrified of her was going to hurt her, right? "Maybe you're ill," she said softly, mostly to herself, when she noticed Simon.

"Simon. Xie tian xie di," she said to him. "Where's the Cap'n 'nth'rest of 'em? I think ..." She paused, then added in a much softer and kinder tone. "I think he's not well." She believed him when he said the last time that he wasn't going to hurt her, but he had said she couldn't leave, and well, Simon was here now.

Simon had arrived in time enough to gather this man was trying to explain the situation to Kaylee, and he flashed a little smile in his direction for the effort. "He's ... I'm sure he's fine," Simon said, glancing briefly toward Neville. "It's New York, '64, on Earth-That-Was before it wasn't."

He exhaled softly. "The others aren't here. It's just me. It's been just me for ... a few weeks," he admitted, uncertain just then how long it actually had been. Two weeks? Three? Time had blurred a little.

"We ... we're stuck here. As far as ... anyone seems to know." He glanced again at Neville before extending a hand. "Simon Tam," he introduced himself in an effort to avoid the awkward 'third wheel' situation.
