Who: Don Draper, Ginny Potter
When: Friday morning
Where: a diner
What: Faced with the apocalypse, Don drinks some coffee
Rating/status: Low / Ongoing

He had woken up to the telephone ringing, and taking a cue from the strange dreams he had been having (locked in a firehouse with the alarm bell constantly going off), he guessed it had been ringing for a while. He groggily answered, the dulcet tones of Conrad Hilton greeting him.

"Welcome to the end of the world,"

"Already?"

"Have you looked outside lately? California's already hearing about it,"

He placed the phone down, considering the possibility of waving this all off as a bad dream and going back to sleep. But something about how quiet it was outside, save for the wailing of a distant siren, stirred him. He crossed to the window and pulled open the curtains.

All of it white. Don rubbed his eyes, groaning. It was too bright. He must've been blinded by a very eager August sun. He opened them again. The buildings and streets were covered in snow and ice. The few people on the streets were wrapped in heavy coats, trudging through what must've been at least two feet of grey snow. If it weren't for the fact that the window was cold to the touch, Don would've been convinced he was dreaming

He picked the phone back up.

"Connie-"

"Wild, isn't it? They're saying it's got something to do with all the hairspray the girls are using. I think it's hooey. They announce we're going to war, and the next day, New York's a Popsicle. I tell you, the end of the world,"

"I'm going to call my wife,"

Well, ex-wife, but that hardly seemed as urgent. Betty answered in a panic, but the children were fine, and enjoying being able to build a snowman in the middle of the summer. He then called Sterling-Cooper, though nobody answered. This seemed as good a reason as any to stay home from work.

So wrapping himself up in what winter clothes he had that weren't in storage, he made his way down to the coffee shop on the corner. He sat in a booth, and stared blankly out the window. Maybe Connie was right. Maybe it was the end of the world.

Well, he might as well have a cup of coffee.

Ginny shook her head. "Yell a lot," she offered. "The only thing I really sing are ... lullabies to the kids." She looked away for a moment. "James is a little old for it now, but Lily likes it well enough. She sings along, at least until she gets sleepy. I think if there's any acting genes in our family, she'll have them."

Realizing she was heading off on a tangent that was going to make her sad, Ginny exhaled softly. It was better not to think about them. About a home she couldn't get back to.

"I don't think I'd be much of an actress. I have trouble taking direction," she added with a grin. Well, that wasn't entirely true, and she'd definitely have a stage voice. She could yell halfway down a Quidditch pitch; she could certainly manage to project to the back of a theater. But really, her heart wasn't in acting and she wouldn't even know where to begin.

Still, she bet it paid well, and that was something to consider if she started to get desperate for a position.

"Well I'm sure most directors will tell you that all great actresses have their own ideas when it comes to direction," he replied wryly. He knew that, in Betty's younger days, she had butted heads with several photoshoot directors of her own. She had lost that spark for most of the years he knew her, though it had reared its head in a very ugly way in the past year. In the same way that Ginny was about to become melancholy reminiscing, Don cleared his thoughts of his ex-wife.

"Ex-wife"

He exhaled, and shrugged, "Well, with the British invasion, as they're calling it, I'm sure a girl like yourself would be in fairly high demand, experience or not," He almost added a comment about her looks, but he swallowed it back. It seemed crass.

She nodded slightly. While she wasn't familiar with that in an acting capacity, she'd certainly known enough Quidditch players who'd had their own interpretation of things the coach had said, and she smiled a little. She was usually one of them.

A girl like her. She nearly asked what he'd meant by that, but that felt a little antagonistic to her and he probably hadn't meant anything by it. "It's something to look into if all other avenues fail," she decided. She thought about asking him if he had any idea where she should start, but that felt too much like committing to the idea, and really ... it was going to be a last resort. Maybe she'd be discovered on the street some day, and she nearly laughed at the thought of that happening.

"Suppose if you have any friends in the theater, you could put in a good word for me," she said, a grin on her lips and laughter in her eyes.

"I'll do that," he muttered, blowing out a plume, "Though I wouldn't get your hopes up. My friends in that world are...well, none, really," he added with a chuckle.

He glanced down at his watch. It was already ten. He hoped Sterling-Cooper had closed for the day, or people would certainly be wondering where he was. He quickly looked out of the window - there was still at least three feet of snow on the ground, and few people managing to trudge through it. Roger wouldn't have come in today, and he can't imagine Bert did, either. Still, no harm in checking.

"If you'll excuse me," Don said, extinguishing his cigarette. "I've got to make a quick phone call," he stood and, with a moment's thought, added, "Order some breakfast. On me,"

Ginny had no intention of getting her hopes up, and while it rankled her slightly to let him buy her breakfast, she wasn't foolish enough to let her pride make this an issue. Besides, then she could give Lily her money back -- or at least try to.

"That's very generous of you, Mr. Draper. Thank you," Ginny replied, a slightly sly smile playing at her lips. "Take your time," she added, and honestly she didn't expect him back. Surely something in his phone call would distract him or take longer than he expected -- and she had jobs to hunt, anyway.

Still, it was interesting to meet him; he didn't seem at all the way Lily had made him out to be, and that was interesting to her. Very interesting. With a grin and a shake of her head, Ginny resumed her consultation of the menu and then she'd move on to consulting the news paper.

He walked slowly to the pay phone in the back of the restaurant, looking back at Ginny as he plunked quarters into the machine. There was something pleasant about her, beyond the fact that she seemed a little, uh, loopy. Yet she was accessible at the same time - genuine. She didn't have that far-away quality that was present in Lily, the quality that was so maddening about her. He was lost in these thoughts for several moments before he realized Selina was on the other end, practically shouting, "Hello?!"

"Selina, it's Don,"

"I should've known,"

"I'm not going to make it in today,"

"You and ninety nine percent of the staff,"

"See you later,"

He stood by the pay phone for a few more moments, studying Ginny. Too bad she had mentioned a husband and kids earlier. That would complicate things - well, a little. He made his way back to the table, a small smile playing across his lips.

Since she hadn't expected him to return, she was a touch surprised when he did. "Welcome back," she said as she shifted the paper closer to herself so he'd have room if he was going to rejoin her for the time being. Whether or not he was actually inclined to stick around, she wasn't sure. She guessed she'd see though.

"So do you have any hints on job hunting for a woman in this time?" She asked, not honestly expecting a helpful answer but curious to see what he'd say all the same. "I don't have any experience with ... anything remotely useful," she admitted. She could fly, she could write about Quidditch, she could hex and jinx like no one's business, but survive in the Muggle world with an utter lack of Muggle-related skills? Good luck with that.
