Who: Lee Scoresby + Angel + Anyone!
When: Winter morning
Where: Macy's or Gimbels, whichever you prefer!
What: Lee needs a better set of warm clothes, the kind that doesn't make him look like a hobo.
Rating/status: ~G/ongoing.

As soon as the bus' doors parted open, Hester had hopped off a grand height from the step and practically submerged herself into the thick snow when she landed in it. That made Lee feel wet and cold and everything, but there was a warm, fuzzy feeling with it deep within his chest and he grinned at his little dæmon when she shook the snow off her hide and attempted another dive bomb but that failed a little. "You ever think I'd get cold with what you're doing?"

"Save it for the bed, Lee," Hester said to him carelessly. "It's not all the time we get this much snow and I plan to indulge."

"In a summer's day, too!" Lee laughed. "What the world's turning into these days..."

He let Hester hop through the snow as she trailed behind him while he led the way into the big department store sitting surrounded by small piles of snow gathered from all over the parking lot. It was an amazing sight, he thought, a place filled with white land and the air was so cold there was fog in his words and the snow was so high, walking forward was like hiking! It didn't look like he was having an easy time trekking through all that snow but really, Lee couldn't be better. This must be something like what his father had seen and felt when he went out on an expedition!

"What d'you suppose we'd find in there, Hester?"

"I dunno," Hester said from within the snow. "Coats?"

"I'll bet. Lord knows how good I am at picking coats, though!"

Now Lee was not a fashion guru and he and Hester had never been one for high fashion and prim clothes. As a pair, they worked with whatever had room for movement or didn't make them itch or sneeze and when the big bomb of snow exploded in New York, they were happy to have Lee walk around in the thick woolen coat he wore during cold nights in the air and it was so big, it made him look like a hunched nomad from the north -- which really, they didn't mind.

But happy as they might be, there was really only so much one piece of coat could do and on top of that, it was the one coat they'd had for years. And if they want it to survive until the next winter -- or the real one -- they had to do something about it.

And that was why Lee and Hester had taken time off their day to visit the magical world of department stores and find another coat for their one to share the burden with. Inside, it was warm and filled with people shopping around for the last season's winter leftovers but Lee kept his heavy, woolen coat on -- because lugging it around by his arm would be troublesome.

And, Hester pretty much just played around in the snow. That said a lot about his body temperature now.

"Reckon we should ask someone for help, Hester?" Lee didn't ask her in particular but it was a question closely tied to his sentiments as he stood in the middle of a huge space. Because really, it had been years since he found a coat that he liked. Now he'd forgotten all about doing it and all these people are just really making him feel intimidated about trying!

The sudden snowstorm that had blanketed New York had taken most of the citizens by surprise, Angel included. While the cold had never bothered him, he had to keep up appearances. It wouldn't do well for him to show up for the night shift without, at the very least, a heavy winter coat. The one from last season had become the victim of a flood in his basement apartment. Now he was forced to purchase another one, long before he had planned to. This did not put him in the best of moods.

Standing in the men's department, he tried to keep to himself. The winter storm at least afforded him some time to cautiously walk the streets, though he still stayed close to alleys in case the sun came peeking through and he had to duck into the shadows for protection. It was so strange to be out during the height of the day, with people milling around, going about their daily business. It was more difficult for him to navigate with all the bustle of the daytime New York but it was a necessary evil.

Lee was hardly the only one intimidated as Angel stood there, his features knitted into a mix of disappointment and consternation. His fingers ran over a few of the jackets, a deep frown setting on his face when he noticed the prices of them. It was highway robbery! If it wasn't for the fact that he enjoyed having nice clothes, he probably would have just made his way down to the cheaper stores or even the Salvation Army.

Looking up from the rack, his eyes caught sight of the older man. He looked just as out of place and confused as Angel did. He gave the older man a nod of his head. It was a form of greeting but nothing too inviting. It was merely the type of gesture that indicated they were brothers in arms here, two old men in need of a jacket while neither of them really wanted to be here.

In Lee's dictionary, though, that spelled, "Hello there, friend, why don't you come over here and fight the war with me?"

Before anyone could accidentally step on Hester, he'd chosen to pick her up behind a camouflage of a group of three friends passing and tossed her into the wide pocket of his woolen coat where she buried herself until she was squished comfortably. Threat gone, Lee tipped his hat to the brunet as he began his relaxed approach.

"Lee," Hester whispered to him as they came closer in case the other man could hear or see her although since he had no dæmon and didn't look like an alien from outer space, she rather doubted it but... "I don't like the way he smells!"

"Good morning to you, Sir," he began with an amused sort of smile as he placed a gloved hand -- the kind that left his calloused fingers unguarded -- on the metallic beam of the rack and looked around. "Wild world we got here, don't we?" This would be the part where he would inject "Fancy some new coats yourself?" but he knew grace better than to do that.

What had been little more than a polite gesture now found Angel with a man approaching him. He almost groaned to himself. Social graces and even being social were not his strong suits. He much preferred to stay within the confines of his basement or within the library where he had found work. Interacting with humans was always tricky at best and deadly at worst.

"Morning," he said simply as he looked the other man over more closely now. He was careful to keep that coat rack between himself and the other man, just in case. "Yeah. I've never seen snow like this in summer."

It was almost painful for him to make even the smallest bit of conversation. Part of him wished he could have gone back in time, forgone the nod to the man, and just kept his head ducked down into the collar of his shirt.

Or maybe that was merely what he liked telling himself. Truth be told, it had been a lonely life without his family. He missed Darla, missed their cavorting and cutting a bloody swash across Europe. He could still hear Dru's little nursery rhymes, haunting him in the dark corners of his mind. Hell, he even missed Spike. At the core of it, he did miss companionship so perhaps that is why he felt the urge to nod his head at this total stranger rather than just continue on his shopping.

Lee laughed. Snow in summer! Now if that wasn't the darnedest thing he'd heard for a long time...

"I'd say," he said to agree as he began looking at the coats that hung in-between him and the younger man and holy cow, what prices they were tagged with! Lee never expected this and it was clear in how his eyes grew that looking at them alone had just about cost him half his leg. This wasn't right, at this rate he would never get a new coat!

"And just when you think these things sell like pancakes..." He slipped the tag he'd checked back inside its coat and pushed it off his mind. "This place's got more money than they got snow." Then to the man, he asked, "Don't suppose you have any idea where an old man like me could find coats without losing my hand, Sir?"

There was actually an odd bit of comfort when he saw that he was not the only one who was taken aback by the prices. For what one coat cost him, back in his day he could have bought not only an entire season's wardrobe but a place to house it in as well.

"I actually don't know the city that well yet. I was thinking of going over to the Salvation Army."

While he was reluctant to trade style and fashion for money, the truth was that he had never been very good at saving. His meager pittance from his library job was hardly going to cover the expenses of a brand new coat and his rent. It was probably a good thing that he didn't eat solid foods but even his blood supply cost him money. Bribing a night guard at the local hospital got to be very expensive.

The Salvation Army? Now why the hell didn't Lee think of that! Probably because even if he knew mostly that he wouldn't be able to afford it, he still wished he could get himself his very first fancy new coat after a long time. But well, clearly new things were not the argument now. Money did the talking.

"Sounds like a mighty fine idea, Sir," Lee said with good agreement as he ran his thumb through the fur on the coat he had been selling. Mighty fine, it was...

"Would you care to join me at Sally's, Sir?"
