As soon as the bus' doors parted open, Hester had hopped off a grand height from the step and practically submerged herself into the thick snow when she landed in it. That made Lee feel wet and cold and everything, but there was a warm, fuzzy feeling with it deep within his chest and he grinned at his little dæmon when she shook the snow off her hide and attempted another dive bomb but that failed a little. "You ever think I'd get cold with what you're doing?"
"Save it for the bed, Lee," Hester said to him carelessly. "It's not all the time we get this much snow and I plan to indulge."
"In a summer's day, too!" Lee laughed. "What the world's turning into these days..."
He let Hester hop through the snow as she trailed behind him while he led the way into the big department store sitting surrounded by small piles of snow gathered from all over the parking lot. It was an amazing sight, he thought, a place filled with white land and the air was so cold there was fog in his words and the snow was so high, walking forward was like hiking! It didn't look like he was having an easy time trekking through all that snow but really, Lee couldn't be better. This must be something like what his father had seen and felt when he went out on an expedition!
"What d'you suppose we'd find in there, Hester?"
"I dunno," Hester said from within the snow. "Coats?"
"I'll bet. Lord knows how good I am at picking coats, though!"
Now Lee was not a fashion guru and he and Hester had never been one for high fashion and prim clothes. As a pair, they worked with whatever had room for movement or didn't make them itch or sneeze and when the big bomb of snow exploded in New York, they were happy to have Lee walk around in the thick woolen coat he wore during cold nights in the air and it was so big, it made him look like a hunched nomad from the north -- which really, they didn't mind.
But happy as they might be, there was really only so much one piece of coat could do and on top of that, it was the one coat they'd had for years. And if they want it to survive until the next winter -- or the real one -- they had to do something about it.
And that was why Lee and Hester had taken time off their day to visit the magical world of department stores and find another coat for their one to share the burden with. Inside, it was warm and filled with people shopping around for the last season's winter leftovers but Lee kept his heavy, woolen coat on -- because lugging it around by his arm would be troublesome.
And, Hester pretty much just played around in the snow. That said a lot about his body temperature now.
"Reckon we should ask someone for help, Hester?" Lee didn't ask her in particular but it was a question closely tied to his sentiments as he stood in the middle of a huge space. Because really, it had been years since he found a coat that he liked. Now he'd forgotten all about doing it and all these people are just really making him feel intimidated about trying!
