first world problems
Who: Lee Scoresby + Galen
When: Early afternoonish
Where: Joe's Rental Hangar (or basically a hangar)
What: Lee checks on his balloon and remains to be faced with his never-ending financial crisis.
Rating/status: ~PG/finished.

"The valve cord's no good and the burner's busted?"

That was what Lawrence the mechanic-person said and he just repeated it so what was he to do but nod? "That's what I said," he even added before he waved to the gigantic wicker basket he was knelt beside, "On top of a lot of things but they're relatively smaller, if you ask me."

"Huh! Smaller," Lee must have snorted a little. "Small's not very small if they all cost you something, anyway." He thought about what stood ahead of him as he removed his hat, raked his white locks up, scratched the back of his head and then wore his hat again. "How long's it going to take once I get them to you?"

"Ehhh, give or take a couple of days," Lawrence sighed as he stood up and plucked his cap out of his balding head.

"And where can I get them?"

"Dunno." Lawrence shrugged sharply before he gestured to Lee. "Thought you're the balloonist here?"

"Ain't from around here," Lee stated honestly but he tipped his hat to Lawrence scratching his skinny side. "Anyhow, we'll take a look around. Good day to you, Lawrence."

"You too, Lee."

Outside, the sun was fierce. Under the shade of his hat, Lee scoured through what surrounded him before he pulled up his pants and started out to the city. "Well, don't suppose we were looking for much good news, anyway."

"Suppose you look for a new hangar, Lee?" Hester suggested at his feet. "See where that takes us."

"Mighty fine suggesting that after we paid the rent!" Lee smirked a little to the warm summer day. "We'll find ourselves those damn things and see what happens. If nothing better comes, we'll look for a new place, all right." And hope upon all hope that the rent would be just as affordable!

"And find a job while you're at it," as if Hester needed to remind him. "The last one was too short for comfort!"

"Least it let us pay the rent," Lee said. Find a job, find that valve cord and burner, find a new hangar -- maybe.

As if he didn't have enough things to think about. Suddenly, he missed the skies.

Once, Galen had been criticized by members of the Circle for not being showy enough with his magic, for just concentrating on the effect rather than the presentation. Over the years he'd learned that complicated magic was its own presentation.

"You might want to step back, Mr. Scoresby. Things will get a bit warm."

There was an electrical feed over in the corner of the hanger. He Attached to that - not much power by his standards, but enough. Cast a platform under the floating burner and set each part there as he used tractor and presser beam magic to quickly disassemble the burner into its component parts. Reach out with his scan and locate scrap metal and float it to him through an open window. Hold the Platform steady while he lifted each part one by one and used plasma to heat and energy fields to cast and machine, adding additional material as needed, occasionally reaching in with a shielded hand to fine tune the process. It was done in only a few minutes, and Galen let his computers handle the reassembly, then dissolved the Platform and lowered the renewed burner to the floor to cool, better than new.

He cupped one hand and concentrated on reprogramming some of the nanomachines that had replaced his blood. The nanites slipped through his skin and gathered like a silvery powder appearing in his hand.

Galen stepped closer to the deflated balloon, and, smiling at what his instructors would have thought, pursed his lips and blew the glittering silvery powder over the fabric. In time the nanites would renew the fabric and paint. The change was slow by Galen's standards, but he could detect it beginning to affect the balloon.

Then Galen was done. He clapped his hands together as he collapsed all the energy fields he had created, and Unattached from the electrical feed. "I should think you might want to give the burner a while to cool off before you examine it too closely. Oh, and it will take a few days for the spell to finish working on your balloon."

Trying not to show what the effort had cost him, he leaned on his staff and waited for Scoresby's reaction.

Lee must have forgotten to breathe the entire time Galen was performing his abracadabra and to be honest, he just kept stepping back and back with Hester pressed against the ankle of his pants. When the whole thing was over, he must have forgotten where he was next.

But no warning could have kept him away as he carefully made his way back to his burner which, in all forms and ways, was shiny and new. He could still see it steaming, sure, but he crouched close to it and gazed at the work that Galen had done, becoming blind to his business with his balloon.

"We-hell," he said with a choked laughter, "must say, this is a mighty fine job you'd done with my burner!" Of course he can't say for sure yet if it would really work the way he knew burners would work but well, every burner would have to be tested, anyway. Standing up to face the man, he said, "I don't know magic but it looks like you'd fixed it fine. How can I repay you?"

Gathering himself together, Galen nodded. "I do good work, if I do say so myself."

He slowly walked to where Scoresby was crouching and looked down at what he had done. "One day, you might have the chance to do something for someone who needs help. If you can, and the person seems deserving, pass on the good deed." He grinned, beginning to feel better as he recovered. "We all do our small part to make the universe a better place."

Galen turned to look out the door to where he had parked his Lincoln. "Would you care for a ride to the Welcome Center to see if they have any job openings that might suit you?"

"Truthfully happy to oblige, Galen," Lee began while Hester padded closer to the freshened burner, "But I've got a few matters I must deal with before I pay this Welcome Center a visit.

Hester and I'll drop by a little later," he added as he touched his hat lightly. "But I think we've troubled you too much." Never mind the fact that he couldn't even figure out what he really was, though!

"As you wish," Galen agreed.

"This is an odd place," he continued, "and an odd time. So much going on everywhere you look. Yet, the catch phrase for this decade will be, 'Turn on, tune in, drop out, get well.' So much technology, practicality, so little magic."

"Working a little magic, bringing a little magic to this busy, practical world, appealed to my sense of whimsey. And you, Mr. Scoresby, struck me as the sort of gentleman who could use a favor today. Repairing your burner there, and your balloon," Galen nodded to the fabric on the floor of the hanger where a small patch of 'newness' was slowly spreading as the nanomachines did their work, "seemed like the right thing to do. It was no trouble at all."

What, so he was something of a magician? Well, after what he'd done with his burner, he figured he'd had to be one. A magician from the future. And he thought he'd faster see pigs flying...

"I'm touched, Galen," Lee said with a hand on his chest. "Hester and I are truly grateful."

Galen lifted his staff and touched it to his forehead in a sort of salute. "I'll be off, then, and leave you too your duties."

"I can usually be found around Meadow Lake in the evening, and do check the notice boards fairly regularly. Be well, Mr. Scoresby."

"And you too, Galen," Lee tipped his hat a little to Galen's direction. After that, there was nothing much else to do but to slip his hands in his pockets and watch the man from his position.
