Susan Sto Helit Meets New York and the Doctor
Who: Susan Sto Helit and the 11th Doctor
Where: A random street
When: Thursday afternoon
What: Susan arrives in town and is Not Amused
Rating: TBD
Status: In Progress

Susan Sto Helit had packed an overnight bag and left her apartment in Ankh-Morpork for her grandfather's Realm. Taking her furled umbrella in her other hand, she had Left. Having a way with Time and Space, she traveled outside of both, since the Realm of Death was not in a normal time or space. She was rather surprised to find herself on a city sidewalk. She was not where she expected to be. She tried to Leave again, and was even more surprised to find that she could not. She was Not Amused.

She tried a Call to her grandfather with no results. She tried to summon Binky, her grandfather's horse with a similar failure. Susan couldn't even seem to locate Death of Rats, despite his habit of following her around for his own amusement.

Focusing on the place she found herself, this New York of 1964, she discovered it was not on Discworld, not in a universe she was familiar with, and even more irritating, found she could not leave the general area of the city, although she could probably travel around it in her usual fashion. She glanced at the people around her and adjusted her wardrobe accordingly, guessing it would be better to blend in for now until she found out what or who was responsible for... for all of this nonsense.

It was the sort of joke Ronny Soak might have pulled, but she didn't sense him anywhere around either as Ron or as his aspect, Kaos. Someone must be in charge, though, and she intended to give whoever it was a serious talking to.

Susan glanced around to make sure nobody was paying untoward attention to her, then tucked her umbrella and bag into that Place she kept things she didn't want right then but would want sooner or later. "I should say that if many people are finding themselves stuck here like we are, it is a most unusual New York. The fact that I can't leave makes it even more unusual. Not a place I've ever been to before."

"The Doctor? Odd, doesn't sound familiar. Grandfather and I generally know everyone." She chuckled, " Grandfather and I have a Way with Time and Space. Dimensions, universes, that sort of thing. I was taking a short holiday to visit Grandfather's Realm, which is outside all of those when I ended up here. I can still travel about this New York, but can't leave the area, and seem to be stuck in time. It is irritating, but a sensible person does not panic when there is a problem, she solves the problem. What about you?"

"Not a place you've been too?" So this woman was a traveler, she must be, at least she sounded like she was. Of course soon the Doctor got the explanation to his questions, well mostly.

"Generally know everyone?" What Susan was telling the Doctor, became more and more interesting with each word she spoke. He pulled out his sonic screwdriver and flashed it over her. "Don't mind me," he commented as it buzzed.

"You can travel through time and space then, but how? What sort of device do you use. Dimensions is impossible. Could destroy the whole universe." It wasn't really impossible per say, but it wasn't something that was meant to be done. At least not anymore.

The Doctor lifted up the sonic screwdriver to his face and read the readings, he just nodded his head, not making any notion of what he thought of the readings.

"Travel as well..Time and space in my ship, got stuck here, ship is gone. There seems to be no way out, only a way in at this moment." He stepped closer to her. "You are beautiful, aren't you. Solving the problem instead of panic! Would you look at that! So what are you? Or, should I say who are you. You're not human, not in the usual sense, immortal."

Susan felt herself slipping into her teacher persona. This Doctor had more questions than a 7-year old on sugar cookies. She gestured at the city around them.

"People are apparently born her, live, die. But Grandfather doesn't come for them here, I'd know if he was around. So this must be a place that operates on a different system of some sort, because if Grandfather has taken another holiday and this was one of his places, I'd no doubt be called to take his place again. But people seem to die here without calling for either of us to make an appearance. So not someplace I've ever been before."

She nodded, "Well, generally everyone. Some are not on his list and of course Grandfather can't see them. But I generally can, because I'm part of both worlds, the supernatural and the normal."

Susan felt a slight tingle from the small glowing object Doctor held. "Device? No device, we just do. Oh, I sometimes use Grandfather's horse if I have a lot of luggage. Binky is such a dear that way. But time and space are easy, just are. Universes can be hard if Grandfather isn't believed in there, but as I said, I'm part of both worlds, so I go where I please."

"Your ship vanished or left you? Best to be precise in this situation. And beautiful? I've been called attractive in a sort of underfed way (she declined to call herself skinny as Ridcully had), but you'd think given who my grandfather is, I'd have had better cheekbones. But hardly beautiful. As I told you, my name is Susan Sto Helit, and if you must know, I do not choose to let the rules of mortality apply to me. Do try to keep up. Pointing out someone is not entirely human is hardly polite. I mean, I didn't make any comments about you now, did I Doctor?"

The Doctor listened to her explain things as he just nodded his head from time to time. It was a rather interesting tale that she had to tell about this place, her grandfather and what they do. It really wasn't what he was expecting to hear one bit, he just thought maybe she was some alien. But, what she was saying, was much, much more then that.

"Let me get this right. You're saying that whatever you're grandfather does, has to do with making an appearance when people die. And, you do that if he is gone, yet this place does not require for you two to do that? Am I getting this right?"

He thought for a moment. "The Supernatural and the normal. Supernatural as in more then just aliens...ghosts, demons, angels.." He did already meet a man that claimed to be an angel and as much as the Doctor didn't believe in that sort of stuff at times, it seemed to all be real. Usually the appearance of a ghost, demon or angel was really the work of an alien. At least here on Earth, where the people make up whatever they can to account for what they just saw.

"You can just travel with out anything? Just do it? How?" That was something that the Doctor had never seen before, there was always something. "A time and space traveling horse," he laughed, "I like that one. Wouldn't mind getting myself one of those. Not that I really need it, got my ship, well, usually have her. But, a horse," he rubbed his hands together and laughed again. "Could you imagine that!"

"What does this part of both worlds mean?" He could take a guess and he was pretty sure he knew the answer by now, but it wouldn't hurt hearing what she had to say.

"Left me, vanished, a little bit of both. Stepped out and something took control over her. Had a friend in there, still in there, hope he's okay." He looked away for a quick moment as he thought about Rory and how Amy would kill him if anything happened to Rory. "She normally doesn't do that, I think something took control of her. Which, is mostly impossible." Mostly in the fact that it had happened a few times before, but was something that shouldn't happen.

"What's not polite about it?" He shook his head. "So you know I'm not human. How can you tell? Another trick up your sleeve?"

Susan nodded in agreement. "Exactly right, Doctor."

"The supernatural as in the Monster Under the Bed, Hogfather, the Tooth Fairy, the Four Horsemen, angels, demons, Auditors, ghosts, all the mythic. When enough people have the same belief for long enough, the Universe tends to oblige by giving that belief form."

"What do you mean, how?" Susan raised one eyebrow and contemplated giving this Doctor a Look. "Grandfather could hardly say, 'Just take a number and I'll get around to you when I can'. Death has to be there on time every time, no matter how many of those times happen at once or where they happen, or how long they take. How would he ever get any time off if he couldn't go outside Time and Space for a little holiday every now and then? Of course for extended vacations, I have behaved as a proper granddaughter and taken care of things while he was away."

"I was conceived and born into Grandfather's Realm. He says that sometimes things are inherited through the soul rather than genetics."

Susan looked at the city around her before replying. "Impossible? Perhaps we should believe six impossible things before breakfast every day."

"Not the doing, the saying in public. You wouldn't comment on a physical handicap, would you? Then why a metaphysical one? Its not a trick or something. Its like the traveling. It just is."
