Happy Independence Day! Today is the day the Continental Congress voted to approve independence from England, which makes today the actual day of independence. The fourth is the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, though most of the delegates didn't actually sign the document until August. And the document that was adopted on the fourth was really just Jefferson's first draft. He gave it to John Adams to edit before it was presented to Congress. Adams actually believed that today would be the day that the country would mark for celebration. He was close! It wasn't actually officially celebrated on the fourth in the beginning, either. Philadelphia first celebrated independence on the eight. The British government did not know that we had declared independence until August 30th. Isn't that crazy? It's so hard to imagine not being able to instantly communicate with anyone. But yes, happy Independence Day everyone!
