Five days on the road with the horses had been a trip and a half. She probably could've done it in four, but she wasn't keen on pushing things. Each time she stopped at a hotel for a night, she brought the horses out, one at a time, to let them walk around and stretch their legs and to clean up the trailer a little. To replace the water, the hay, to give them their dinner. And of course every night she called her dad to tell him how far she'd made it. And now, she was home. Her new home. A place that didn't feel anything at all like home. Even now she wondered a little why she'd come here. She could've used the trust money to fix up the place then sold it ... instead she'd moved into it. But it was renovated and furnished and all hers. Hers alone; emphasis on alone. She couldn't recall a time she'd ever been alone-alone. When she wasn't living at home with her dad, she'd had a few stints where she attempted the whole committed relationship thing. None of them had panned out; she hadn't looked too closely at the way she'd probably had a hand in self-sabotage. Either way, here she was now. She'd backed the trailer close to the gate of the paddock attached to the barn and turned the truck off. The first thing she planned to do was get a smaller car. The truck was great for hauling the trailer but she wanted something smaller for just driving around. And work. But that was farther down on her to-do list than the immediate future, which involved settling the horses. She dropped the trailer gate and pressed a hand against Reggie's rump as he started to back up. "Not you, fuckwit," she said. But this was kind of standard - Reggie was not great at backing out of the trailer and she preferred to have Belle clear of it before she unleashed him. She unclipped the barrier from behind Belle and tugged lightly at her tail. "C'mon, Bellerina," she coaxed. The mater was a little better at it and managed to get down all right. Jaime clipped a leadline to her halter and then crouched down to remove the shipping wraps. They were the cheat kind - the ones with the velcro straps - but she'd doubled them up. Once she had all eight of them off, she led the black mare to the paddock. Unclipping the lead, she swatted her lightly on her rump, closed the gate, and moved back to the trailer. Reggie's departure from the trailer was, predictably, less than graceful. He sprang back, tripped over his own feet, but managed not to fall. Good thing; she hadn't nailed down the equine vet's number. Once he'd gotten his balance, she removed his double wraps as well, tossing them toward the pile with the others; later, she'd throw them in the wash. Leading the big gelding to the paddock, she unclipped him once he was on the right side of the gate and watched as he trotted over to join Belle. While she knew her dad really would rather her have the horses together - he didn't really ride that much anymore - it still felt weird to have Reggie here but not her dad. She guessed eventually she'd get used to it. Leaning against the fence, Jaime watched the horses for a minute or two. The paddock was adjacent to the road, but she'd had the fence moved in some so it wasn't quite as close as it had been. The last thing she needed was for someone to crash into the fence and for the horses to escape - or worse, be caught in the crash. Extending the distance didn't make it perfect, but it made her feel better. Not, she saw, that there was much traffic. Since she'd been there, only a handful of cars had passed by. Leaning her cheek against the fence, she watched as another car went by, slowing slightly as a little girl in the back seat pointed excitedly. Why not? As far as Jaime knew, no one had been here in forever, so why not some interest about the horses in the field? While she figured she should probably get her ass in gear, put the trailer away somewhere, detach the truck, and figure out where the grocery store was, she didn't. She leaned on the fence, her eyes half-closed as she listened to the horses explore their new home. |
