A/N: Thanks to lemondropseven for the beta. Okay, I have no idea how this happened. I really wanted to write porn for National Porn Day, and this came out. My only defense is that my WIP is getting very dark right now and apparently some fluff was needed. My apologies to torino10154. I'll try harder next time.
Neville was glad Harry was happy.
Really.
But he had to admit it was odd watching his close friend be completely head-over-heels for Severus Snape.
He thought he understood how their personalities meshed, at least after a few celebratory gatherings of the Order. He'd always thought Snape was a cruel bastard, but he had to admit he didn't seem that way with Harry. Watching closely as they interacted with each other, Neville was forced to think that there must be layers to Snape's personality that maybe only Harry knew about.
That wasn't too much to assume, he thought. And besides, Harry looked happy which is all Neville really needed to know.
There was just one thing he really couldn't understand.
"So," he asked Harry as they stood next to a punch bowl at yet another party, "how are things with Snape?"
Harry smiled that goofy-looking grin of his and his eyes wandered to where Snape was standing by Kingsley.
Snape, who looked like he was wearing a teaching robe that had seen more than one exploding cauldron. His hair was still lank and hung in greasy strands across his face. Not that that wasn't an improvement. His complexion was still sallow, his cheek bones even more prominent after a year of (what Neville now realized) stress from running the school under Voldemort. His hooked nose stuck out on his face like a bad joke.
Kingsley must have said something funny, because Snape grinned just then, showing just a bit of yellowed teeth. The grin didn't look like a grin should to Neville either.
"Um, Harry..." Neville started to ask, then realized he was probably a few words away from being hexed.
But frankly he didn't understand how Harry could be attracted to Snape. I mean, it wasn't like he was perfect, but sometimes it seemed like Snape went out of his way to be ugly.
Harry was looking at him now, and Neville searched for the proper thing to say.
"I was just curious...um...the thing is..." He scratched behind his ear and started again. "With Snape, how can you..."
"What about Severus?" Harry asked. They both looked towards the man in question, who took that moment to scratch what looked like a bad case of psoriasis on his hand. Neville nearly gagged. Harry smiled.
When he turned back to Neville the goofy grin was back. "What were you asking about Severus?"
"Um..." Neville said, turning again to Snape who was now looking at Harry. He watched as Snape's face relaxed from its scowl, as his eyes seem brighter, his entire face more youthful.
It was difficult to see, but Neville thought he caught a glimpse of what Harry saw in Snape as he watched them look at each other. He smiled into his cup of punch and remember that not all mysteries could be solved. He might not understand it, but that didn't make it any less real.
He sighed. "I really hope I love someone someday the way you love Snape."
Harry looked confused. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing," Neville said, then walked away as he saw Snape coming, his steps somehow lighter than they had been before.
