An unusual piece of Bill Sienkiewicz commercial art... (And some Perez Titans)
I came across this years ago on holiday in France, and only just found it again whilst spelunking through several strata of old boxes in my flat.
But NOT the teenagers you might be thinking of by default...
It's scanned from the the French packaging for a board game based on the 1980's "Dungeons and Dragons" cartoon which in France was called, for no reason I can think of, "Le Sourire du Dragon" ("The Smile of the Dragon").
It's a fantastic piece of artwork, and I'd love to see the original, but I have to wonder who thought his style was a natural match to the cartoon, which couldn't be more un-Sienkiewicz-like if it had a large subtitle saying "This is not a Bill Sienkiewicz art" flashed across the screen every three seconds. Enjoy at any rate.... And to provide a suitable accompaniment, I'm adding in the French opening of "Le Sourire de Dragon", sung by the inimitable Dorothée, who as head of "Club Dorothée" seems to have pretty much been the French kids TV in the 1980s version of Oprah Winfrey!
As this wasn't a comic, for legality I bring some nice Perez artwork.
I have no vested interest in the auction (beyond envy), and not nearly enough disposal income to bid for it, but this is a rather nice page on e-bay. It's from New Teen Titans #2, page 10 pubilshed in 1980 and features Starfire meeting Robin properly for the first time... The team have just rescued her from the Gordanians who were chasing her, and he's just had to tackle her to prevent her from going wild with her starbolts.
The first panel is great all by itself.. Dick's nickname for Kid Flash is deeply suggestive, and his comment about Starfire bodes interesting questions about their eventual sex life.
Kory's face here makes me believe she's musing, in Tamaranean, "Oooooh baby, I wanna have me some of THAT!"
I love Robin's expression in this panel, but only someone trained by Batman, or gayer than a of bucket of rainbows, would ever be able to say that many words before surrendering to the moment with Starfire...
And his flailing arms and legs here are just adorable... (Starfire on the other hand has never seemed more predatory... She's holding onto his head so tight that one might suspect she's part face hugger laying an egg down his aesophagus...
And when they finally do break the liplock, Starfire can suddenly speak perfect English... And I imagine Dick isn't able to to say anything for quite some time, and possibly has to sit down for a few moments with his legs firmly crossed and his hands clapsed in his lap as he thinks of cold wet mornings, tax returns, calculus mid terms and other examples of utter tedium until everything.. ahem... returns to it's proper place and the feathers on his briefs are once more unruffled!
Oh, and a little something for those of you who prefer the ladies (You strange, strange people you! :) )
