Too bad that they didn't explain why the Sapphires had to turn in their gems for rings.

They already did, in Green Lantern #20. The gems possess too much power over the host. The Rings are more manageable.

Thank you. I still think Star Sapphire > Violet Lantern, but that reason works. It now makes sense that Carol is in control of the ring.

it was also mentioned that the ring doesn't influence her as much as the rest of the new Star Sapphires because she's had a lot of experience with it before.

Gems were too out of control, overcoming the weilder, as the gem took attempted to take over the Zamoran queen.
