Doesn't she always end up going home to an empty apartment?

At least she's got a content half-smile. Shulkie must be saying something entertaining.

He refused to do any more work for Marvel because they canceled X-Men: The Hidden Years when it was still making profit. He stated as much himself. He claimed he wanted nothing to do with a company illogical enough to cancel a book that made money. It's a bit of a weird move on his part because it's hardly the first time the comics industry canceled a book making money. In fact, when DC initiated Byrne's Superman revamp, they did just that, canceling one of the auxiliary Super-books that was turning a profit. I guess it's different when the cancellation personally affects you.

I'm not completely sure but is one of the characters on the bottom center (behind Batman?) one of the characters from his The Lost Generation series?

Does anyone know if Byrne goes to conventions?

That guy is from "Lost generation" yes. Naked girl holding up his signature is the hottie he drew himself hooking up with in "the Art of John Byrne"

I know he offers commissions online and such but it's not quite the same. My favorite part of a convention is getting to meet the people.

Or Star Brand...I remember seeing him talk about the Pitt (when Pittsburgh blew up in the New U) in NYCC in the 80s. Very lively.

But didn't he pretty much used Star Brand as a punching bag for his anger at Jim Shooter and his heavy-handed editorial policies?

What do you mean?

Well, from what I understand, John Byrne had a problem with what he saw as Jim Shooter's heavy-handed editorial policies (strong inter-title continuity, the need to at least pay lip service to basic rules of signs, instituting line-wide crossovers, overruling the writers on plots and characterizations, etc). So when Jim Shooter was ousted, the EIC that replaced him hired a group of authors (that included John Byrne) to revamp and reinvigorate the stagnant New Universe line. John Byrne took over Starband, a title with a protagonist with many traits and background details that were similar to Shooter's and proceeded to turn Starbrand into a conventional superhero, have that backfire on him as he faced ridicule and lots of second-guessing, which, in turn, led to Starbrand trying to get rid of his powers, which resulted in a cataclysm that turned Pittsburgh into a pit full of mutagentic slime. Pittsurgh, btw, was Jim Shooter's hometown. Then, Starbrand's girlfriend died a rather gruesome death, Starband went insane and lots of other crap kept happening to him until the title was canceled.

From what I understand, many New Universe fans at the time accused John Byrne of sour grapes. I am inclined to agree.

I kind of doubt that it was all Byrne's revenge on Shooter. The "Pitt" storyline was a Big Event that was meant to renew interest in the New Universe line, a la the destruction of Wildstorm Earth lately, and the stuff that went on with Star Brand struck me as more of Byrne trying to make sense out of the few sketchy details of Star Brand's origin as much as anything else.

*Shrugs* It's possible. I won't presume to have any special insight into Byrne's though process, and all these events were over a decade before my time. In other words, you may well be right.

Of course, John Byrne having a grudge and wanting to tell a good story don't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.

I get a real sad nostalgic vibe looking at this, in particular seeing 'his' costumes for Woverine and the Fantastic Four. As to me that is the definitive costumes for those characters..(I know anytime I play The Marvel Ultimate Alliance Game I always choose those versions of the costumes..)

I also think he drew a nicely heroic looking Superman, and an absolutely gorgous She-Hulk.

And I sooo miss seeing his artwork at Marvel and DC. But I think there's way too many bridges burnt there for us to ever see his work in their titles again. Which is just so sad.. :(

While I like a lot of current artists, Byrne for me still does the best Thing, Doom, and Captain America.

Byrne recently said on his board that a lot of stuff Marvel puts out makes his skin crawl, and even if they threw tons of cash at him, and let him do whatever he wanted, he still wouldn't take them up on it because he feels working for them would seem like he was giving Quesada/Bendis/Millar, etc. his approval.

Yeah I really like his Thing, Doom, and Captain America as well. Especially his Doom, who came off as being every bit as regal and majestic as he should be. (Although as far as classic marvel artists go, for Captain America, I would give the edge to Mike Zeck whose take on Cap I really, really loved..)

I'm not going to go into the disagreements and various falling outs that area said to have happened, as not being a fly on the wall at these things I don't think I'm qualified to judge what exactly went on there. There's a great line from Thor in the mutant massacre issues of that title.. (373-374?) where he says to Cyclops that he learned a long time ago not to judge a man by what the newspapers says about him. And I honestly believe that that sort of caution should these days probably apply to about 99% of behind the scenes disagreements 'reported' on the Internet.

In other words..If we weren't there, and didn't know what exactly happened, then we probably shouldn't jump to conclusions. I prefer to let people's work speak for them. And there's been very few comic issues I've encountered where I didn't like John Byrne's artwork, and that's good enough for me..

O-Kaay, I see... uh... well, let's go from top to bottom. That's Nova, I think, and then we have Hal Jordan, and the Silver Surfer, and Wolverine, and the Fantastic Four, and the Hulk, Iron Fist, Power Man, Spidey, She-Hulk, Dr. Doom, Kitty Pride, Wonder Woman, Cyclops, the Scarlet Witch, a kid who is probably Franklin Richards, Namor, Darkseid (rippin' up the artwork, that naughty boy), ROG 2000, Cap, OMAC, Robotman, the Beast, the Torch of Liberty (I think it's of Liberty, anyway), Puck, Superman, Batman, Guardian, and the Demon. That leaves *counts* 16 characters I don't recognize. Anyone wanna help me out?

On top of what volksjager said...

The guy on the board with the Surfer is Star-Lord (thanks to the other commentors for that one). Leaning on the Thing is a character from Byrne's Danger Unlimited. Tapping ROG on the shoulder is someone from Next Men. The four kids around the drawing board are the Prototykes. In the lower left corner, the two teens are from Byrne's short-lived Lab Rats. To the right of Batman is the Black Fox, from Marvel: The Lost Generation. The astronaut in the lower left is from the same short story as the naked woman. Oh, and you probably know him, but don't forget the Mole Man, his face peaking out below ROG's feet.

I don't know who the Darkseid fan, the woman next to She-Hulk, and the woman behind Batman are, though the one with She-Hulk might be from Byrne's Babe, a title I know next to nothing about aside from its name.

Oh, John Byrne...I wish I could quit you.

This commission makes me happy on a couple of levels. One, it's just great to see more Byrne art. Two, I've seen what his rates are and, last I heard, he charged double for drawing Marvel characters; someone laid out some serious dough for this piece. As often as you hear of creators who helped define characters getting little to no long-term benefit from it due to the old work-for-hire contracts, it's a bit heartening to get the feeling that some of them are doing all right anyway.
