The Brood homeworld is destroyed, and Kitty is sad that her friend was apparently killed. Back on Earth, Professor X demotes Kitty to the New Mutants squad. ("Professor X is a JERK!") But an alarm goes off while Kitty is alone:

Aww, wonderful scans. Love Paul Smith's art.

Why did they have to age Kitty so much? Now she's dead because nobody liked her any more.

Heh, I'm one of those people who wishes they aged Kitty more. ;) I liked her. Not Whedon's direction for her, true, but Rachel needs to fly across space and get her out of that space bullet pronto.

No, she's dead because Joss Whedon liked her too much, and that's what he does with the ones he likes.

Yeah, it's pretty sad that people were betting from day one that Kitty was going to "die" after Whedon said that he really liked her character.

I used to be a fan. Then I realized the man has only one act, one schtick, one line of patter. And after you see it a couple of times, it gets old.

He also said that Cypher had the power he most wished he had. Thank heavens Doug was already dead...

Probably because, like most fans and/or gamers, he thought of a hundred ways to twink it into Ultimate Power. Alas, it wouldn't actually work for the same reason that Reed Richards hasn't turned the Marvel U into a sci-fi wonderland - Status Quo Is God.
(I have omitted the TV Tropes link. AM I NOT MERCIFUL?)

Actually, to be fair to Whedon, he said he liked the power because he's hopeless at languages himself.

I don't think they aged her very much. They just made her crankier.

In years they've aged her about eight or so, about the same as Rahne.

In terms of mood, well can you blame her being pissy sometimes?

That's why we have "Wolverine: First Class," aka "The Awesome Adventures of Kitty Pryde (and Her Sidekick Wolverine)."

This is one of the first X-Men comics I read, after spots of the Brood storyline. I forget how old I was at the time, I think this is mid 80s? So between 13-16 I think, and I totally fell in love w/ Kitty. She's easy to relate to, while being almost accidentally bad ass. It doesn't hurt that Smith's art is his utterly fantastic (thanks for the name, btw).

Paul Smith was always one of my favorite Uncanny artists. Such clean, expressive artwork.

I love how the brood are all, "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, RUUUUNNN!!!!" and then we see a full body shot of Lockheed and he's just this teeny little dragon.

Love the art in this, especially the panel of Kitty picking up Lockheed and him going, "Cooooo". So cute.

Also have to add that I'm looking forward to the upcoming Brood story in Astonishing X-Men. The Brood is one of those groups of villains that has always managed to creep me out.

I liked Lockheed so much better like this, when he was basically an ur-Pokemon, not that talking alien spy whateverthefuckthatwas.

Oh yes. One of my lead favourite parts of Whedon's run. And there were quite a few to choose from.

I love those two issues. The issue with the first appearance of Lockheed was the first issue of Uncanny X-Men that I ever read. I was 2.

I love Lockheed. I think the fact that comics can accomodate the concept of a tiny alien dragon alongside serious drama is an excellent reason for my continuing interest in them. What's happened to the little guy, anyway? I haven't been keeping up with the X-books, but it's my impression that he's pretty much vanished since about the late '90's.

Lockheed is still very much around! He was recently in the Pet Avengers mini, and in Astonishing X-Men there was a big reveal that he was a super intelligent government agent who could speak more languages than Professor X. (Um...no thanks Whedon. I like cooing Lockheed.)
