Supergirl Annual #1

This is from Supergirl Annual #1, by Sterling Gates and Fernando Dagnino.

First off, Lucy Lane is alive. She absorbs the life essence of some guy, killing him, and gets reborn or something.

We see her growing up, and how she was jealous that her father always gave Lois more attention. We don't see any mention of her relationship with Ron Troupe, or their child, which is disappointing.

Six weeks after Sam Lane gets apparently killed, she enlists in the army.

She gets injured when the Amazons attack, but Codename: Assassin, under the orders of Sam Lane, saves her.

Gah, I'm still just waiting for Lois to kick her Dad's butt for being an ass.

lois is deserving a kick in the ass too. This issue had more anti-lois vibes in it.

once Superwoman comes back her problems with Kara should go away.

That still doesn't change the fact that Lois's opinions of Kara have been exposed.Unless Lois comes out and says she was completely wrong and she has faith in Kara's actions and decisions this could taint the whole relationship. In this annual the idea of Lois as the high and mighty reporter who always got what she wanted and still complained sheds light on her actions ealier. Especially when Superman sided with her against Kara despite obviously siding with Kara in the matter.

her opinion of Kara was tainted by Lucy's death, it wasn't her normal attitude

She wasn't that great earlier on in Supergirl either. I don't think the reaction from Lucy's death brought out what wasn't already there.

Lucy thought that Sam treated Lois better. Even if this were true (and Lois seemed to think the opposite here), that's not Lois's fault.

That is irrelevant, Lois has lead a priviliged life and has never really experienced failure. She has got everything she has ever wanted. That has to inform how the character behaves. (and you can still get everything and complain you don't have more)

Compared to whom, exactly? How are we defining failure? She certainly hasn't had everything she ever wanted. For example, she wanted her father's love, which she felt she never really received. She wanted a nice normal relationship with a guy she liked, but ending up falling in love with the world's foremost hero. She frequently doesn't receive what she wants, but she adapts and moves on with life.

I think that one could argue that Lois received more attention than Lucy from their father, though the attention was usually negative. I guess it also says a lot about Lucy's character* that she envies the negative attention received by Lois.

*Though I refuse to take this story as a good example of Lucy's behavior, since it contradicts pretty much everything I thought I knew about the character.

I don't understand how this is an anti-anything sentiment. How does this make her need a kick in the ass? 'Cause she needs to be less...privileged?

Are we to assume that the Lane/Troupe marriage and little Sam Troupe have been SuperboyPunched! out of existence along with the old version of Sam Lane who was just a cantankerous old retired enlisted man and is now a super soldier and 5 star general. And how long has Sam supposed to have been dead? The Imperiex War must have been less than 5 years ago DCU time (Lex was President). Could former stewardess Lucy who must have been 25 at least when she enlisted (if Lois is in her mid-30s) become a major in less than 5 years? And why does she suddenly not look at all like Lois when in the 80s and 90s artists made some semblence of an attempt to give them similar features (as sisters should have)? Comic book logic? I liked the New Krypton idea but this Patriot stuff is so much meh to me.

Back in December 2008, Matt Idelson said "Lucy and Ron are no longer a couple, though she did make a vague allusion to their marriage in the NEW KRYPTON SPECIAL. Her joining the military to try and honor her dead (so far as she knows) father and gain the approval she'll never get - even at the expense of her marriage - is meant to be a step forward in her character growth. As for Sam (Ron and Lucy's son), lets just say he may be gone, but he ain't forgotten! (And that's all the comment I'm going to give on THAT topic for the moment.)"

http://www.supermanhomepage.com/inter-action/inter-action.php?topic=ask-editor/ask-matt-1208

At the very least, their relationship hasn't been retconned away yet.

I'm curious why they didn't just say "Ron is a single father now."

It's not like Ron Troupe is playing a big role in the super-books, and they should know retcons annoy the fans.

I think Sam Lane pulled some strings; Lucy mentions "I rose through the ranks quickly. Faster than I should've."

Maybe she was still really weak from her injuries, and she was walking toward her father, but then suddenly started collapsing, and so she braced her legs stiffly against the floor so that she wouldn't fall, and then kind of sagged over at the waist until--

Okay, I got nothing.

also, last two panels:

"Of course I will, Dad. I'll do whatever you need me to."

The art on this a mix of Ed Benes and the current artist on Supergirl (forgot his name). Also, the artist for Red Tornado mini is another Ed Benes light artist...not a good thing.

What is up with the Ghost Costume? Magic? Lucy sucks up souls now? Weird...

One of my idle fanboy ideas for a Superman sequel was Brainiac kidnapping Lucy Lane to use as a weapon against Superman. He'd alter her with Kryptonian DNA he had from Kandor (full of dead Kryptonians) into a hybrid he names XTC. In her "super" form she'd look like XTC/Brainiac's Daughter from KINGDOM COME. Superman would fight a foe with most of his powers (but not at his levels) that he can't really hurt as it's Lois' sister.

Here's a pic of XTC from KINGDOM COME

Lucy Lane getting "super" powers for nefarious ends must be a common fanboy idea. I'm not crazy about General Lane being nutty, though.
