JUSTICE!

One scan from the preview for Justice League: Cry for JUSTICE! #3.

The full preview is here:

Supergirl gets two "Justice"s in a single panel, and apparently Ollie thinks Hal has a small penis.

Should we have a Proactive Superheroes Done Right week? There seem to be so many instances of it being done wrong.

I'm trying hard to think of examples of it done WELL. Usually they either end up RE-active (Winick's Outisders) or it's shown as being a bad idea (Gruenwald's Sqaudron Supreme) since it innately goes against due process of law (much moreso than vigilantism)

Much of the early run of Birds of Prey was Proactive Superheroes Done Right. Around half their missions involved going after slave traders or drug czars or political prisoners or whatever; sometimes to defuse a situation before it happened, almost always to deal with a problem that would never even have crossed the cape radar if Babs hadn't gone looking for it. (A lot of the time this resulted in Dinah getting kidnapped, at which point of course things inevitably take a reactive sort of turn, but nobody's perfect.)

That's arguably not that different from stopping Grundy from tearing up downtown Metropolis, since in both cases you're basically stopping a crime in progress, but it's certainly a notable step up from "badguys target Titans, Titans defend themselves, this has become a completely meaningless contest of Red vs Blue and no one is actually protecting anyone from anything or saving any lives beyond their own," sort of thing, which is so ubiquitous and annoying across the comic landscape that you can see why the whole "this team will be PROACTIVE!" concept keeps resurfacing regardless of how many times it's sunk disastrously before.

Sorry, I guess I just don't view it as arguable; pursuing an active crime ring of any sort isn't pro-active behaviour to me.

I'd classify the bad guys targetting the Titans, or robbing a bank and the Titans intervening as the same category.

The Outsiders had sort of the right outlook in their mission statement. They'd go looking for Sivana before he could build his assault mechanoid or whatever, they'd go looking for the smuggling ring etc. Of course, the series never delivered on that.

How is protecting yourself from harm remotely comparable to protecting civilians and public welfare from harm?

They'd go looking for Sivana before he could build his assault mechanoid or whatever, they'd go looking for the smuggling ring etc.

That's not proactive, by your definition. If the smuggling ring exists, how is that not an active crime ring? Sivana is a wanted criminal, who has already committed umpteen bazillion offenses; him being free and out in the world is already a crime in progress, and if he's got the blueprints for an assault mechanoid out on the table, he's actively beginning the commission of another.

Because they choose to insert themselves into the situation where THEY becomes the targets rather than the civilians.

True, but in this sense, and in my worldview, it's because they're unaware of it until they go looking for it. How much of the Birds work in picking targets was Babas going looking for it and unearthing that which was hidden, and how much was assessing existing Police reports she had accessed.

Sivana is a wanted criminal, who has already committed umpteen bazillion offenses; him being free and out in the world is already a crime in progress, and if he's got the blueprints for an assault mechanoid out on the table, he's actively beginning the commission of another.

Fair point, though I think someone mentioned that Sivana is usually in hiding in a place without extradition agreements. So a crime is still in progress, but it's not one the law enforcement agencies can do much about.
