Martial Arts Week: Kung Fu Nomenclature (with the Immortal Iron Fist)
First post after finally migrating to the new community.

One of the best martial arts book on the market right now is Marvel's Immortal Iron Fist. Heavily inspired by classic Wuxia films and literature, this book has brought back into the mainstream one of my favorite tropes of martial arts fiction: crazy names for combat forms.

The use of such names was a staple of the first arc, but in the second arc, featuring the Tournament of Immortal Weapons, it got cranked up to 11.

I love the art by David Aja in this series, if only because of how well he understands some of the actual mechanics behind movement in martial arts, and can at least try and follow some ground rules when dealing with superhuman fighting physics. I'm only posting a tiny fragment of the awesome fights from this book; if you don't already have a copy of volume 2, GO BUY ONE NOW.

Also fun is how the language seems to come not just from traditional mangling of grammar and syntax when translating between English and Mandarin, but also multi-cultural allusions.

Damn. Punched her so hard she bled Steranko.

And the coup de grace...

In real-life martial arts, forms are described through poetic allusions to their mechanics, but also usually numbered within their greater style or system. Because if you've got fifty ways to throw a strike or block, you want somehow to tell them apart in a verbalized or written language for brevity's sake.

I've only studied three martial arts so far, none of them from the Chinese mainland, but they all had an interesting way of naming the moves. The most literary of them had to be Aikido (then again, anything in a foreign language sounds exotic).

You have to hand it to Fraction/Brubaker; it's an awesome part of the series. I encourage any readers to come up with their own hyper-descriptive maneuvers in the comments.

KI-AAH!

Couldn't they just have someone use an attack literally called "Adjective noun verb!" :)

I always wanted a shapeshifter called the Indefinite Article (Her real name would be Ann)

Damn. Punched her so hard she bled Ditko.

I think she's bleeding Steranko, actually.

I want to be able to unleash something called Hell's Unfurling Hurricane on somebody.

Oh.

Oh, that would be the best name ever for insanely hot buffalo wings. "We have mild, medium, hot, Infernal Supernova, Incandescent Sun Tiger's Claws, Burning Phoenix Chi, and Hell's Unfurling Hurricane." And if people ever asked what about the wings was like a hurricane, I'd just tell them to wait a few hours.

Nothing to say, really, except to agree to all above.

Welcome back, prime.

A lot of the nomenclature depends on the whimsy of the person(s) who systematized the art, of course. It also depends on the general philosophy of the art. Karate-do tends to use very utilitarian naming conventions, being descriptive of the mechanics. Haiwan-hineri-uke is simply "twisting forearm defense", for example, and it comes mostly from the desire of Funakoshi and his contemporaries to make the systems open to be accepted by the Japanese. Same thing happened in judo with Jigoro Kano.

There are however exceptions that I think derive from the old, Chinese origins, from simple things like the standard punch being called a seiken-tuski, or spear-fist, and a certain lapel-grabbing throw being named after that part of a priest's robe. Others come from the Bushido spirit of seeking to meld the poetic with the practical when referring to inspiration/description; thus the kenjutsu "flowing water cut" and "red leaves cut" in Miyamoto Musashi's GO RI NO SHO.

Of course, there are more recent innovations crediting important personages. The gyaku-ude-garami armlock is commonly known in jujutsu circles as the "kimura" after famous Japanese fighter Masahiko Kimura.

Argh. That should be seiken-tsuki. My keyboard-fu is sooooo lacking. Gomen nasai.

Dammit, that is it! As soon as the end of Wednesday Comics frees up some money for me each week, if I pull one 616 title, Immortal Iron Fist is the one!

I cannot recommend this series high enough. The pacing gets a bit too decompressed at times and we get a bit of a Stephensonian rush at the end, but the "texture" of both art and story is always worthwhile even in those stretches.

I think this series did for Iron Fist what Robinson did for Starman: added gravitas, depth, drama and opened enormous unsuspected venues of exploration.

I had that exact same reaction. I'm probably going to start with the trades, though.

Question--have there been any stuff after Faction/Brubaker with Iron Fist, and has that been any good?

The moment from the splash page that I loved is Davos and Danny using the Bastards Black Heartcrusher just at different points in execution given that they have almost the same powerset and know mostly the same kung fu. Its those little details that made the first 15 issues or so plus the filler one shots among my favourite comics ever. Plus fat cobra is awesome.
