Martial Arts Week
Issue #4 Legion of Super Heroes (1984)

The Legion of Super Villains have conquered Orando (Princess Projectra's homeworld) and tucked it away in another dimension to use as their base of operations.
Nemesis Kid, Princess Projectra, Karate Kid, and Ferro Lad all applied to become Legionnaires at the same time (1966 real time). Nemesis Kid was revelead to be a spy for the Khunds and booted out. He had tried to blame Karate Kid as the traitor, that failed and he fled.

18 years later, its time to settle old scores:

Princess Projectra tries to come to her husbands rescue but fails miserably.

Back in those days, dead Legionnaires stayed dead.

KK really needs a better name.

I remember this mostly by how the cartoon played out. Karate Kid joins on a recommendation from superboyman, but gets little respect from the other legionares because he doesn't have any powers. A guy called Nemises Kid joins at the same time, who's power is to take other people's powers away.

I'm sure you see where this is going, right?

...well you're wrong, as the story's big bad has nothing at all to do with Nemesis Kid, and when Karate Kid inevitably beats said big bad and proves his worth, Nemesis is one of the Legionares who thanks him and apologizes for his earlier behavior.

It was just one of the many ways the series loved playing with your expectations.

According to the Legion consititution, KK's lack of powers would mean he doesn't keep anyone else out of the group from overlap. Or would it mean that no one else without powers could join? Or just someone whose powers give them martial arts?

Technically he shouldn't have been allowed in BECAUSE he lacked powers. Unpowered beings were not permitted. Karate Kid was given an exception only because his skills were extraordinary (being able to fight Superboy to a sort of standstill... ish) to the point of being as much a power as Brainiac 5's intelligence.

The Legion has a weak consitution.

In all seriousness, I don't think that the cartoon version of the Legion had such a constitution - it was more like, if you wanted to join, and you had useful powers, you were in. If there was such a rule, I don't recall it being specifically stated.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Will you post Projectra's reaction?

When did martial arts training become a super power?

When you are the goddamn Karate Kid. they tried to make up some bullcrap about him being hyperaware in the lightning saga.

When it becomes developed to the point that you can hurt Daxamites with it?

Tell that to the guy who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z back in its furst dub run.

Extreme Martial Arts/Ki Attacks/etc. are all defined by the fact that they are not "Granted" as powers are, biut earned through HARD WORK AND GUTS (or cheating).

It's one of the reasons I liked Karate Kid of all the legion stuff I've seen (which is mostly what was posted). He's the badass Normal who can kick everyone's ass.

Yeah, when you can kick some Kryptonian/Daxamite ass, the questions about power vs skills goes real quiet.

I see that scene happening in a Quentin Tarantino style.

I don't think he directly hurt a Daxamite did he? Inconvenienced one a bit, but not hurt per se.

When you can do what Midnighter needs to use machines for naturally, that's when.
