November Solicit for Batman

BATMAN #693
Written by Tony Daniel
Art by Tony Daniel & Sandu Florea
Cover by Tony Daniel
Pandemonium breaks out at the inaugural ceremony of the new Arkham Asylum. Will the combined forces of Oracle, Huntress and Catwoman be enough help for Batman? Plus, the debuts of both the Gotham Shield Committee and Black Mask’s Ministry of Death!
On sale November 11 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

I *was* planning on dropping Batman once Tony Daniel came back on board, after not being very impressed with Battle for the Cowl, but then they go and let him write about Oracle, Huntress and Catwoman! Hmph!

Huntress is also on the cover for Streets of Gotham again, I should note. Birds of Prey characters are all over the place right now. Which I do kind of like, in that they are not just bound to their own little corner of the DCU, but boy do I still miss Birds of Prey.

Also, anyone know what the Gotham Shield Committee is supposed to be? Something to do with those Red Circle titles I've been steadily ignoring?

Which is exactly the reaction I had when I first read the solicit. I'm still a little iffy on the issue, however, since I'm not actually sure Daniel can write a good Catwoman, Oracle, or Huntress, much less all three.

Well, aside from the "I'll draw Huntress in the Jim Lee outfit because I think it's sexier" thing, and Catwoman getting punched out in a cave that exploded and then re-appearing just fine later on, and Oracle ejecting the girl Damien randomly picked up from the Batmobile (to have possibly met her fate getting eaten by Croc)... I don't know. I think it's possible he may be able to write them okay, but I'm still unsure and I still dislike his art style.

I was NOT impressed with Daniel's Catwoman in BFTC. She was a bit too flippant. It seems the only one who can write her well these days at DC is Dini. The only mention of her feeling about Bruce's death for instance during the whole BFTC period came during a few panels in "The Underground" one-shot by Chris Yost. Considering how recent Heart of Hush was you'd think his death would hit her a little harder.

And as much as I love seeing Huntress, I'm a little worried she's going to be written three different ways by three different writers. Well, Rucka I'm not worried about but the others... :(

(Is it just me, or does that look like Jason on one of the card-things there?)

I'm not going near it, myself. After the debacle that was Battle for the Cowl, Tony Daniel is persona non grata for me.

Ugh, I hope not. Tony Daniels needs to stay away from Jason.

Get it? That Tony Daniel is so subtle.

It's so weird how Morrison doesn't write Catwoman. Not really.

I'm nervous about Daniel.

*misses BoP with you*

Has he ever written Catwoman? I guess it would make sense, since he's much more interested in Talia, what with Damien and all. (Helena Kyle and Damien should so duke it out when they're grown up.)

I just find it highly amusing that now that Batman is dead (or otherwise indisposed), there are literally a dozen Bat titles out.

I suppose it's because there's a very small window for people, or DC, if you prefer, to have their stories set in a world without Bruce Wayne.

Okay, so I can recognize most of the people on that cover, (looks like they are keeping carved up face Joker. urgh.) but does anyone know who crazy looking dude in the right bottom corner is?

Also, as much as I don't like the slicey smile Joker, I must admit I love how the artist drew Riddler. Oh Eddie, you're just so charming.

Given established writing patterns, when they say Will the combined forces of Oracle, Huntress and Catwoman be enough help for Batman?, what they really mean is will Dick be able to save the day once all his utterly useless female allies pop in, pose sexily in stupidass costumes, and get clocked within a panel to demonstrate the seriousness of the threat, to which the answer is of course he will. There, I just saved you the trouble of buying it. You're welcome.

On the plus side, "Oracle." Not that we didn't already know, but I think that's the final nail in the "Babsgirl returns" coffin, thank His Noodleyness.

Which should be a good thing, yet instead I often find myself cringing and just wishing they'd be left alone.

Pandemonium breaks out at the inaugural ceremony of the new Arkham Asylum.

Who could've seen that coming? You just know Gordon gets up in the morning, sees a headline like "Arkham Asylum being reopened!", and thinks "one of these days I'm just gonna call in sick."

Oh, I'm still dropping it. If it has the name Tony Daniel on it, especially on writing, I'm pretty sure nothing good will come out of it.

No, no, no, get Tony Daniel out of my Bat-titles!

The guy seems a lovely bloke and all that, and I enjoyed his art on Teen Titans, but dude cannot write to save himself, and his art on the Bat-folk is just...blah.

Wesley Dodds? What's he doing there?

Hrrm, he was mentioned to be one of the people resurrected during Blackest Night, so maybe he's alive again and a member of this "Shield Committee" whatever that is, what with him being the first superhero in the modern DCU (chronologically speaking) as well as being a detective that even Bruce Wayne said he admired.
