Invincible Iron Man #16

This is from Invincible Iron Man #16, by Fraction and Larroccas. I'm posting four pages, but two of them are cropped so it's essentially three pages. Someone else can post four pages from the main storyline with Madame Masque, or something.

Later, Maria Hill is taking a shower when...

That's the only way Fraction could make this boring, turgid storyline vaguely interesting - the vague promise of tits on show.

Also, am I the only one bothered by the sort of voice and attitude he's chosen for Natasha? I struggle to believe she'd be this much of an asshole to Maria, despite the fact Hill's obviously made some dubious choices.

But this storyline still reeks of some forced penance for both Maria and Tony, to me. You make some bad decisions with the best intention at heart, and you get mind-raped for it.

I thought it started out good, but it's really been dragging without much change for a while.

I expect it's because this book is coming out faster than the Dark Regin garbage, which will likely end up with Norman melting down and Tony saving the day, thus having all charges against him dropped and being the hero ago (since normal human occupants of the Marvel 616 universe are largely morons). So, they're just tossing in the filler while Norman melts some more.

If anything, based on Fraction's interiews, Tony looks to be in an even worse situation when this story is over.

That said, I still can't get over the numbingly bad art to the vapid brain-erasing tripe. I don't know if it's the pencils themselves or the colorist, but EAUGH.

Really? Because to me, Natasha seems to be pretty much judging Maria on current operational issues, not things like Civil War etc, etc. (well, there was that one bit about the 'right side' last issue, but I read that as more whether Maria is working for Osborn) Maria's supposed to be a top-notch field agent, she's coming in with an urgent message and unknown tech from Tony Stark... and at the same time, she's doing it in a rather ridiculous and overt way. Seriously, painting Natasha's logo on the front door of her building?

To me, Natasha's simply being practical and trying to get something approaching a proper SHIELD agent out of Maria. (In a panel not shown here, the phrase 'best agent of your generation' is thrown out). They are in a bad situation, with very bad people coming after them, the stakes are high, and the current Maria is likely to get them both killed in action. (And honestly, yes, Maria is suffering from post-mind-rape trauma... but she's still a high-end agent of SHIELD. If anyone should be able to bounce back from this sort of thing...)

But the thing is that Natasha, who has little to no reason NOT to trust Hill in the current climate, given she's associated herself with Stark, the Widow and the MA, is being ridiculous and overly sceptical of Maria, in my eyes.

I'm not a huge Maria Hill fan, don't get me wrong, but it does seem that Natasha's been shoehorned into the role of someone doubting her just for the Hell of it. If Maria had gone to say, Bucky or Luke Cage, I'd expect the reaction she's been given by Natasha throughout this arc. As it is, Natasha would clearly recognise the fact that Hill's been through Hell, and rather than chastise her for being unclear, would help her shape up and sort things out.

As it is, it just looks like yet another effort on Fraction's behalf to drag this out even more.

If anything, I'm more bothered on how Black Widow isn't *angrier* at Maria for all the horrible things she's done for the SHRA and the Civil War.

I agree about the forced penance, but surprisingly, it doesn't do much because I can't take much joy in Maria and Tony suffering. A little satisfaction, perhaps, but not much joy. It's pretty much at the point where I don't care much about either character to hate them.

It's like I pity Maria, but I definitely don't feel sorry for her.

BW was pro-reg during the Civil War, so I don't see why she'd carry any particular grudge against Hill.

Well, the problem is, it isn't penance. Penance would involve Maria and Tony actually admitting they were wrong. Instead, it's "oh, we are so noble and brave, look how we suffer for our noble braveness." This title actually had "the law is the law" Tony and Maria patting each other on the back for defying Osborn and running away from the law, and then smugly criticizing others for "just fololwing orders."

Nthing this. I don't even think that this is Natasha; it's some B-movie actress that got beat out for the part in the new Iron Man movie and is just going around in the home-made costume that she wore to the audition, cosplaying.

What the hell did Marvel bribe and or blackmail them with? I know it's eclectic with some art issues, but Air is light years ahead of this tripe. And did they even consider Agents of Atlas?

Okay, so everything Hill did during Civil War and such was because the Controller was pulling her strings? Or was the controller thing more recent.

If she starts to think about how other people feel, that would qualify.

It was never that Hill did things that Fury didn't, it was that she did them without any empathy or respect.
