Justice Society of America #29

Continuing from when the preview left off...

The All-American Kid gets possessed by something.

Disappointing; I was mainly interested in how Willingham would write Obsidian, and he spends the first issue as a black egg. :/

Retread of Geoff Johns' stories where Courtney and Jakeem are being told to stay at home in the sandbox? Check!

Terrible writing of Michael? Check! (At least Eric Trautmann is writing a soulful, introspective, and NON-DICKISH Michael over in JSA vs. KOBRA.)

Eww on the art? Check!

Worse exposition than Geoff Johns? Check!

Yet another America!!!!! themed character? Check!

I'll pass.

Oh man, Eric Trautman. Just reading that name makes me sad. Why couldn't they let him write JSA? Or at least continue Checkmate, instead of letting Bruce Jones brutally murder one of DC's best books in a dark alley.
At least Trautman got the voice of all the characters and knew how to craft an interesting, suspenseful plot.

Eric's incredibly meticulous and careful with the characters that he's charged with. All his recent work for DC has been tightly plotted, complex, and just the kind of story that I love in the superhero genre - good character moments, people actually acting SMART and seasoned, subtle and enjoyable character moments, everything. Plus, he writes an incredible Peej! I agree - he should be writing an ongoing team book. And DC failed to properly credit him on a few issues of Checkmate which...given the quality of Rucka and Trautmann's collaboration is downright insulting. On the other hand, he's got a bunch of new projects coming up for DC, so we'll be getting more Trautmann goodness.

(And the fact that he's put at least three panels in the JSA vs. KOBRA miniseries specifically for me only adds to the whole package.)

Oh, Trautman's doing more work for DC? Well, at least that's something to look forward to, now that JSA is apparently going off to No Thanks Land.
I remember there being some concern about a drop in quality when he did his first solo issue of Checkmate, but in the end it simply stayed as excellent as always. I really hope Eric Trautman gets to make a name for himself in the industry, as he's really quite talented, for exactly the reasons you've named.

I'm actually not quite sure. All my awesome looking icons come from Jack Shoegazer's Iconomicon over at the LJ, he collects images from all over the place and makes them into fantastic icons.

I reckon Trautmann is DC's unsung hero... Greg Rucka got most or all of the credit for Checkmate - and not without reason, because his work is also fantastic - but Trautmann just feels kinda glossed over.
