Blackest Night
First time poster, so if I'm doing anything wrong please let me know. :)

Spoilers for Blackest Night #1.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl are discussing their ~destined~ relationship and Hawkgirl's refusal of it when, well, this happens:

I'm more upset about the fact that we've seen Ralph and Sue as ghosts already, and even that I'm willing to hold off on judging because it's only been one issue. We have no idea about the mechanisms behind the Black Lanterns yet, really.

Other than that, like people have said, rebirth has become the whole point of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. In that respect, having them be the big death at the end of issue one is a lot more powerful than just some meaningless death (coughUltimatumcough) and is pretty compelling.

I see no reason to believe their souls are involved at all.

Wo things make me take the opposite stance on that argument.

1) Sue looks awfully regretful and unwilling as if questioning her actions at every moment, suggesting a spark of 'good' remains. Similarly, even if it has turned sadistic, Ralph retains his vigorous and enthusiastic streak.

2) Deadman is involved, as a skeleton; we can surmise that when a person becomes a BL, any ghost they have floating around is sucked back into their body and subjugated.

Although, admittedly Ghost Dibnys versus Zombie Dibnys would be surreally awesome.

Well, when Ollie Queen was brought back to life without his soul by Hal, his reanimated body was virtually indistinguishable from his former, complete self. He was the same person mentally, even if (spiritually speaking) he was nothing more than a soulless clone.

Could be the same thing going on here. "Their souls are trapped inside their corpses" does seem more likely, but "here come their ghost-selves to fight off their zombie-selves" would be kind of neat as a twist.

Well, the same solicts also say Deadman's on DIck's side against the undead circus. So it's up in the air exactly what ghost compared to body interaction might be.

where'd you see Deadman involved? I didn't see him in Blackest Night. If you're talking the cover with Batman, I think people are leaning towards that being the Dick's father.

Promotional art on IGN showing the Deadman costume as a Blackest Night variant inhabited by a skeleton ala Kingdom Come, also the figure appears on the Blackest night #1 Variant with fellow Black Lanterns.

Plus, the solicit for Blackest Night Batman mentions Deadman and the Zombie Flying Graysons separately; also, why introduce a new Deadman out of the blue instead of just re-employing the old one with even more decay?
