Preview for the new Batman
From the DCUBlog, some Preview pages from Batman 688

I'll skip over the first four images, which show Dick getting the shit kicked out of him by a shadowy figure, in the Bat-vault, someone who clearly knows where it is. Is it Lucius Fox PO'd at Dick nicking all the good R&D toys? Is it Jason? I don't know, but it IS a Winnick story. Whoever it is had better be in line for a righteous smackdown, as I thought we were past "Dick gets taken down by a mysterious badguy to show how badass they are" when he put the ears on... it would appear not alas.

Oh, and appropos of little, click here for a 45 minute animated superhero fanfilm you might enjoy, as it has just about EVERYONE in it. The style is a little too close to Family Guy for my tastes, but IS thorough... sort of

Although I can't really see Bruce being anything other than methodical or leaving a crime scene tainted, I like this as a nice little nod to Dick's history as a former cop who wouldn't want to do anything to make a fellow officer's job any harder than it has to be.

Oh, that rascally 'old' Batman, leaving his guano all over the crime scenes....

All joking aside, I do rather like this.

When and how Dick managed to put on at least fifty pounds of muscle in a couple of weeks is clearly deserving of a story all its own. But I do love the smile at the end.

I'm starting to believe that Dick's arms really are pregnant with Starfire's alien babies, all of which will come to light in that creepy Titans story.

His rib cage is definitely pregnant too, then. And possibly his thighs.

Oooh, then I'm guessing it's some sort of....infestation.

He didn't actually put on that much extra muscle. Some, but not that much. See, his uniform contains a layer composed of a kevlar-like polymer, which has been shaped to make it appear that he's more heavily muscled than he is, in an effort to both maintain a Batman silhouette as close to the original as possible to avoid arousing suspicion and preserve his secret identity, while decreasing the chance of serious injury on the job. [/theoretically possible bullshit]

And before that, back in the Golden Age, Dick had a Batman costume that basically was a Batman shaped foam rubber bodysuit, with a Robin shaped gap in the middle. It could be told from the normal Batman costume because it had a Robin shaped chest symbol, even down to the red breast.

Robin shaped gap.

I... am sleep deprived and too easily amused by certain word groupings.

That actually does make quite a lot of sense. I mean, people are already commenting on his height, but you would think his leaner build and bendier fighting style would be even more conspicuous than that. But the extra padding and armor probably weighs him down quite a bit more too, hence limiting how many Nightwing-esque flips he can do in the cape.

Plus now he has the cape to hide his most distinguishing feature-- his glorious derriere, that fundament of fundaments that even non-human primates have grown to appreciate.

I had a silly idea yesterday for a Bruce robot suit Cass could wear to pretend she's Batman, there's no reason Dick couldn't do something similar.

For some reason I'm reading that last panel as somehow ominous (This NEW Batman is working for US = DUN DUN DUNNN!) but maybe...

Wait, it's comics! What could ever go wrong?

Yes, I was okay with it until it was ARGH BATMAN SMILING! And not just the patented BatSmirk or BatUpturnedLips that usually constitute Bruce's smiles. SMILEY BATMAN IS CREEPING ME OUT.

Dammit, Dick, you're in the Bat-cowl. Stop smiling! It's. just. wrong.

It's a sad state of affairs when I think "O yay, Winick!" simply because I need a Jason fix.

I want to trust Winick - the last Batman issue hit every point I wanted to get hit since Bruce died - and I do, but then I remember it's only a matter of time before he breaks out the Kryptonite. ;_;

Dick giving Batman good PR is an excellent idea.

The implication here, I think is that, while Bruce was more concerned with his bogeyman image, and therefore tried to stay out of the limelight as much as possible, Dick is trying to do the direct opposite, in order to reassure the public that yes, Batman IS still on the job.

And also as noted a couple of times Dick IS a natural performer, playing a Bruce-like bogeyman isn't natural for him, so there's not that much point trying.
