Captain America: Reborn #1
4 pages from today's Captain America Reborn #1 by Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch.

The truth about what really happened to Steve:

So Steve is bouncing around time and reliving bits of it. No clue how this jives with his spirit showing up in Thor which Brubaker signed off on. And it seems slightly similar to what Batman is going through.

Okay....okay.... it's plausible and I am not smacking my head on the monitor. So he has become like Desmond from Lost, jumping around to different imporant places in time. With all the exposure he has had to the Cosmic Cube, I could see that some of that energy to will himself around (subconciously) may still influence where he goes. And he may need Sharon to focus his will on being in the Marvel 616 present.

Boy, the time cops are going to love Steve....

I am curious whose body is in the chamber Namor is watching over?

He'll probably ignore that like he ignored the fact that the shield was buried in that chamber with him and not in a museum.

Easy. Thor wanted to talk to him, the Odinpower made it possible, and at that point in time, Steve was frozen in the iceberg.

Except the Thor talk happened after the machine was used to unstick Steve from time. The Thor talk happened the same day as Cap #600 according to Brubaker (both took place on the one year anniversary of his death) which was long after the machine was used.

The spirit made it clear that he wasn't passed on; he didn't know where he was (actually, depending on when that issue of Thor was relative to #42, when Sharon broke the machine, possibly he wasn't bouncing around at that point, he was just waiting to be summoned).

And it seems slightly similar to what Batman is going through

It does have some superficial similarities, but this was set up a long time before RIP (as Brubaker said elsewhere, it's inspired by Slaughterhouse-Five).

So basically this is "Slaughterhouse 5" with Cap. Hoo doggies. Some of the things he has seen, nobody should relive.

So how much is the Vonnegut estate getting in royalties for Marvel TOTALLY RIPPING HIM OFF?

"Time stabilizer damaged. He's unstuck in time. Zathras warned, but no one listen to Zathras, no."
"What do you mean unstuck in time? Where is he? In the past? In the future?"
"Cannot say. Saying I would know. Do not know, so can not say. Very damaged. Zathras can never have anything nice."

Started with Vonnegut. "Listen, Steve Rogers has become unstuck in time" is a direct lift of the opening lines of Slaughterhouse-Five. I can only hope that means the last lines will be "Po-tee-weet?"

I was excited to hear that Steve was coming back and was going back and forth on whether I wanted to buy that (especially with how many titles i'm stuck with this week), but now that I know how their doing it, I have to pick this up. That makes two Marvel titles, good job guys!

Fuckin' A is all I have to say.

I still hate Brian Hitch's art. It looks so WRONG most of the time (Fantastic Four was bad enough, thank you).

And couldn't they wait like two or three years before bringing him back? People are barely getting to like Bucky being Captain America, dammit!

I imagine the immediacy of the return (still, it's been almost two years, hasn't it?) is because Brubaker wanted the death and return to all be one big story. A couple more years down the road Bru might not have been on the book any more (for whatever reason) and then who knows how it would happen?

Wait, so the Red Skull's plan was to have Cap assassinated by the love of his life, keep him stuck indefinitely at what must've been the most traumatic day of his life, only to bring him back and kill him all over again..?
That's.. some Grade A villainy right there. My hat goes off to you, Herr Schädel.
That being said, I'd still rather have the book continue as it is now, an ongoing tribute to Cap's legacy rather than same old, same old.

With Hitch's art, and that helmet design, I can't help but see this as Ultimate Cap, not 616...
