Dick and Kory

Okay, I don't really keep up on Dick and Kory stuff, but I remember on the old scans_daily that someone posted scans from Titans where Kory was saying that they shouldn't get back together again since it would pretty much be just another fling and not lead to anything serious. So, what, that lasted for like, a month?

Yeah, I actually liked that bit from Titans.

It's funny, I don't really ship Dick/Babs all that much, but new Dick/Kory stuff bothers me in part because it isn't Dick/Babs. Hmm.

I have almost the same problem. I put it down entirely to fandom. I've pretty much never seen a Kory/Dick fic or argument that didn't take at least a few sentences to put down Babs or cast her in a negative light, even if it's just a repeated meme by Kory that Dick's other girlfriend sucks or super!petty bitch!Babs taking issue with Kory. Thanks to my general choice of fandoms, it's pretty much the only virulent ship war I've been a real party to, and it's the only one that's actually crept into the canon (find a panel where Babs talks about Kory. Any panel).

As a Babs lover from before I ever knew who Kory was, it's made me loathe the ship, even having come to like Kory and regardless of how well it's presented, because it's inextricably linked with Babs-bashing in my head now (fortunately I can ship her with Donna and mostly sidestep the issue).

Yes. Yes. Exactly that. All of that. Especially:

because it's inextricably linked with Babs-bashing in my head now

That.

It's not fair to Kory as a character, to the Kory/Dick relationship, or to Kory/Dick shippers, who, especially if their favourite or starting-point part of DC was Teen Titans, see Kory/Dick as the default pairing. Whereas I'm so bat-oriented, I just think it doesn't quite fit or make sense, especially with Dick as Batman now...

But, I feel like half the time Dick and Kory have been thrown together in recent years is only because TPTB want to have a "hot" scene between two hot characters. And by extending that logic, I feel like saying "what? you're saying that Babs isn't hot enough? that she isn't good enough?" And my obsessive loyalty to Babs cannot abide by anyone who answers "yes" to those questions.

It's such stupid-weird defensive logic on my part, but there it is.

(Gah. Fixed HTML.)

Yesyes. And I think we all know I'm the last person to ship Babs/Dick, so it's not like I'd even want it to be her instead that hot!Dick-who-needs-hot!Woman hooks up with. But that does not matter! Reason and logic are the first casualties of a ship war! I was there when we buried them, and I know we will not see their like again.

Hahaha yes.

Recently I've found myself not entirely opposed to Dick/Babs, it just absolutely cannot work if it's all destiny-laden or if they wind up with the same problems over again (entirely new ones, sure). I'm not sure I can even blame Dick if there is a possibility for future Dick/Kory, but it's more the editorial/creative thought that goes into future Dick/Kory, and how readers will perceive it and respond to it that I think bothers me the most.

Incidentally, the throw-away Dick/Kory scenes make it look like they can have a friendly romantic-tinted relationship without it dripping over with angst, something which Dick and Babs have decidedly not had for a while now. But I never got the feeling you did reading Kory/Dick scenes, so...

This picture up there looks like a recipe for disaster, however.

(For the record, I fiercely ship Dick/Babs. I like my trainwrecks, thanks.)

Yeah, I think that's definitely part of why Dick/Kory crops up so often. It's sort of been set up in the past that they can have a one-night stand and it's not a big, heavy emotional deal, but something the two mutually enjoy for pleasure or comfort or both.

But in Titans Kory pretty much said that she didn't want to keep doing that if they weren't ever seriously getting back together. (I think there may have also been another instance further back where they had sex, and it hinted that Kory was kind of hurt that it didn't mean they were back together.)

So I can't see Dick starting up again unless it's serious. Which makes the Babs-fan in me irritated.

Hope y'all don't mind if I toss my two cents in.
I prefer Dick/Kory because I'm a DCAU'er and I have fond childhood memories of watching Teen Titans. Also, Kory and Dick are closer in age (last I checked anyway). Their relationship showed a growing point for Dick. It was his first time away from Gotham and all the bats, he was moving on with his life or "spreading his wings". Kory was his first 'away-from-home' girlfriend, who while resembling Babs somewhat (mainly the hair colour and killer rack) was very different from women he was accostumed to.
Babs/Dick bothers me for a few reasons. The main one is because it's always been a bit... squicky IMHO. It's like batcest or going out with your babysitter. (Oddly, I don't have the same problem with Tim/Steph.)
At the same time, I can see why Babs/Dick could be logical. They have a comfort of shared experiences in having to deal with Bruce's bat-angst and all of Gotham's wackiness.
My other reason for being kinda anti-Babs/Dick is because he seems like the beard between Dinah/Babs. And you know, Dick has no place between Babs and Dinah. *Shot for bad pun*

Er, I thought this comm might be 18+ because of the more-than-occasional NSFW scans?

Oh, so only adults are allowed to read comic books?
And for the record, I refer to teen years as childhood memories. Titans was like... five years ago right?

Babs/Dick bothers me for a few reasons. The main one is because it's always been a bit... squicky IMHO. It's like batcest or going out with your babysitter.

Dick/Helena (Earth 2 take) bugs the crap out of me for this reason, but the power dynamic's a bit different between Babs and Dick, and there's of course the complication of the Crisis shuffling. Babs is older, but Dick had at least a couple years' experience on her when they met - longer in the Bronze Age - and if there was any point when they didn't act like peers in the field, it was *him* condescending to *her* from a position of theoretical superiority (the whole "you don't need to know my and Bruce's identities" thing frex). Post-Crisis, the year gap between them closed by roughly a half, and the creation of Oracle, a manifestly adult identity often explicitly portrayed as *peer* to Bruce rather than disciple, retroactively imposed a great deal more youth on the Batgirl identity. This in concert with Dick's adult identity of Nightwing gave them a pretty strong "grew up together" vibe, I think, that dispelled a lot of what trappings of babysitterness existed in their Bronze days (at least for the writers).

Not that they're not an utter disaster together all the same, of course, very literally star-crossed lovers, and I prefer them to have the sense (or at least luck) to keep themselves to a much less celestially calamitous friendship.

And you know, Dick has no place between Babs and Dinah.

Depends if your definition includes the plastic kind.

Ahh, Kory/Donna. Is there anything that OTP can't make better?
