*bangs head against wall*
Saw the recent Green Lantern post here. Was not impressed with the depiction of Fatality in it. Thought I'd post a comparison with the first issue of Green Lantern she showed up in.

*sarcasm* I can't imagine why any comic fangirl wouldn't fantasize about being one. */sarcasm*

The new version, courtesy of the GL post a few entries down:

The original (GL v3, #87):

That's way too much difference to just be the scene lighting (especially since she's backlit), but I suppose it's possible the colorist just made an error for that page.

I'm not going to be able to get to the comic shop until Friday afternoon, so tell me...

...does her skin tone get back to normal after that, or does it stay the same as it is in that first pic?

I'm also going to complain about her new costume. It makes even less sense for Fatality than the rest of the Star Sapphires. She's a trained, experienced warrior whose original outfit had complete coverage of all vital organs, and her species apparently isn't much tougher than humans. I can see her wearing the new costume when she's not in combat (given that it's designed a LOT like what she was wearing when she initially tracked down Kyle -- can't go running around New York in extra-terrestrial body armor after all, but a low-cut leather-and-fishnet top and some plain ol' jeans fit in reasonably well), but it's a bad choice on the artist's part to put her in this for a fight scene.

You're making the foolish assumption that Star Sapphire uniforms are designed for anything but sex appeal.

Nor do other ringbearers typically wear armor of any kind anyhow, relying on their rings to protect them. What's the difference between exposed skin and a thin layer of spandex?

The complaints definitely seem misplaced.

No, I'm trying to make a point about why I don't like artists favoring sex appeal over common sense in their designs.

Pandering to the lowest common denominator is just...kind of sad, really.

Fatality could be in a full-coverage uniform (common sense for combat), and if it was drawn sufficiently skin-tight, it'd still have plenty of sex appeal. Ring constructs are pure energy -- they don't need to be big and bulky to be protective.

Also, I want to say I can't believe people actually defend the Star Sapphire floss, but it would be a lie.

"Wow, it really is endemic.

It's passing "endemic" and heading for "epidemic."

Also, I want to say I can't believe people actually defend the Star Sapphire floss, but it would be a lie.

I was figuring someone would defend it eventually, I just wasn't expecting that to be the very first comment.

And while I'm thinking about it, did you ever read that issue of Green Lantern featuring Wonder Woman and Jade? (Or the one with Wondy and Kyle, for that matter, but I figure you'd prefer the former.)

I want her staff back.

The rest is horrific, and a bad direction for the character.

But taking away her signature item, the thing most closely associated with the character? That's just unforgivable.

Let me rephrase that.

It'd make her more distinctive, and it'd give her a non-ring option for fighting.

Seeing as how she's brainwashed, the costume clashing with her previous characterization isn't surprising or even out of the ordinary.

It's not just her, there's an annoying lack of protection for the ring-bearers in general. Even when you're fully clothed, it dosen't really help much. Just ask Hal 'Stumpy' Jordan how effective the Guardian's garmets are.

When you mentioned bleaching, I automatically was looking at the hair and trying to get what you mean, took me a while to realize you meant skin...wow, that's a big change!

And even as a male I have to say some of the Star Sapphire outfits, Carol and Fatality's most obvious, are a bit too hentai-esque even for me. I love a view of breasts any time I can get one, but I never understood the need for every female warrior to only get an iron clad bikini. A book I read once, Split Infinity I think it was, mentioned that a woman clothed in a sexy way is always more enticing and sexy than that same woman naked. What can I say, men love what they can't see more than what they can.

And not even touching the oh-so-convienient location of the "star".

Perhaps we need to start a list of "Characters who've been Whitewashed in comics"

So far we have Fatality here, and Empress during that magic-themed crossover thingy I can't be bothered to remember.

Any others that people can remember?

Well, Vixen gave her name to the practice because it happens to her so much. Akila got it in Wondy #30. On the Marvel side, Misty Knight was lookin pretty pale (and straight-haired) in the Capital Cities of Heaven arc. Connor is, of course, one of the rare but repeated male victims.

I wonder how much of her is real anyways. It seems everytime she popped up, she ended up losing a body part..I think she lost both of her ears and both of her arms...And you got to love that name. "Fatality". It just screams 1990's. She probably spent her off days hanging around with Bloodscream and Bloodaxe at the nearby space-mall trying on giant shoulder pads and finding just the right pouch to cover one's leg with.

No, wait, I mean Ryderified. Or should it be Cloakified now since we saw the Dodsons' hair fail with the new design for Cloak over in Not So Dark X-Men?

Here's the problem with dressing the guys in outfits that are as...provocative sexually as SS's here.

You can certainly do it, but it won't read as the same kind of thing, which is to say, it will be read as "homoerotic." Which is how it always reads nowadays if you do that, just about any overt presentation of male sexuality. Which is fine, unless that's not what you're going for.

Myself, I've always wondered about this assumption. So women never, ever are attracted to men physically or objectify parts of their bodies? Not in the real world.

My god, this is just so disgustingly horrendous. The broken limbs on both of them. The made-up thigh and shoulder muscles. The horrible facial foreshortening...

Oh yah. And the completely sexist, offensive costume with a side of white wash. I am always reminded why I read so very few "super" books.

Hey guys! Winter is definitely upon us! For me it means that now I'll spent my leisure time at home- because this place is warm, dry and anytime you can get a cup of hot tea and sure some favorite comic books. After reading your post I decided to purchase the full collection of Green Lantern comics, so, thanks a lot for the great winter idea!
P.S. winter is also the time when you go to bed earlier, so don't forget to take some sex toys with you.
