My Response to Millar's use of Doctor Doom. Greetings True Believers! I have a problem with the "Masters of Doom" storyline. The problem is that Victor Von Doom does not have a master(s), Doom IS the master. Pride has always defined Doctor Doom (and led to his defeat at times) so the thought of Doom willingly and eagerly bending knee to any being flies in the face of the character Marvel has been building since 1962. I realize that Millar might be planning for Doom to betray his "master" and may have always been planning that. That is the ONLY way to salvage this storyline. Below the cut is one page from the 1987 Marvel graphic novel, "Emperor Doom" and this one page explains why Doom would never kneel to any being and it's a powerful display of the awesome. Enjoy!

The ONLY time in memory Doom bows to another. It is debated whether or not it is canon, but the power and epicness of Dr. Strange / Dr. Doom: Triumph & Torment cannot be denied, even all these years later. A classic tale which captures all of the players at the peak of their game and true to their natures, and offering a heck of a lot of insight into the two men: Dr. Stephen Strange and Dr. Victor Von Doom. Also, at long last, we bear witness to Mephisto's monstrous TRUE form.
I will post the 1/3 allowed after debating through which great pages should go up. (for those of you impatient, there are tons of Respect threads that have the scans).
In the meantime, as an active monarch, Dr. Doom is a master of many things, most especially his manners.

Triumph & Torment: Part 1 - I Hear and Obey A master becomes coherent, a gathering ties test fates, and 2 separate and distinct powerful being paths come together. A contest, a training montage and the Big Fight against the Biggest Bad. No, this is not Rocky III, nor is it Dragonball Z.
This is Marvel at it's finest, with 2 of it's most formidble and powerful mortals taking on one of it's greatest villains.
Warning: Big pics, not dial-up friendly in any way. (*Some are mine, some are not mine.)
*for the mods*, the story is 72 pages, not including covers, splash page with writer and artist names, etc.

The final issue of Tom Strong Towards the end of Tom Strong, Alan Moore stopped writing the title and it was handed to a series of guest writers who each did one issue or one arc, including Brian Vaughan, Geoff Johns, Ed Brubaker, and even Michael Moorcock. Moore returned for the final issue though, to give his characters their proper send-off.
This issue has a significance within Moore's oeuvre. When it came out, Moore's work on all the other ABC titles had already wrapped up. As such, this was not only his farewell to Tom Strong but to the ABC line and mainstream comics, as well (as he's made clear in interview's that he's washed his hands of that scene).
It's a real delight. If only all swan songs could be this elegant and graceful.

Conversation With A Dead Person
Aka When Stevie Was Dead: Epilogue. Argh, there's more? Well, kinda. After my post of recent myth stuff, I thought about posting something from the current Thor series that got lost in the shuffle, and this sprang to mind since it relates to the death of Captain America: in #11, Thor attempts to summon Cap's spirit.

Green Lantern/Superman: Legend of the Green Flame So...I had no idea Neil Gaiman wrote a Green Lantern story. Apparently the tale has a pretty interesting history ('How do you lose a Neil Gaiman script?'- Mark Waid). It's a pretty decent story, with a lot of talented artists attached (plus cameos by Deadman, The Phantom Stranger* and Selina Kyle).
*Due to certain constraints the Phantom Stranger may not appear as advertised. Or at all

Golden Age Wonder Woman This one was published in 1946. I gather that the issue had multiple stories about Lana, whose mental turmoil about her relationship with her no-good boyfriend Carl Ambishun AKA Silas Sneek had the side effect of taking her and the Holliday girls to other time periods, where they would temporarily forget that they hadn't been born in ancient Greece or wherever and behave as if they belonged there. Since Lana said "Oh, my formula", I'm assuming she made some kind of chemical thingie that she drank that gave her this ability. I really, really want to see how this concept was introduced. But all my collection includes is the last of the stories about Lana.

The difference between "clever" and "smart" I'm not a scientist, but I DO work at a place which has some of the cleverest people in the country on staff; brilliant engineers who have built everything from satellites and landers to particle accelerators, software developers who helped build the Internet, physicists of every flavour from particle physics to the sort that require more dimensions than the Great old Ones inhabit... Seriously, their combined IQ would be terrifying.. But are they SMART as well as clever? That's a difficult question.
A former Chief Exec used to tell a story about visiting another research establishment, and asking how many scientists were employed there. Their CE told him "We have around two hundred scientists, and one inventor"... when asked to elaborate on what the difference was he was told "The inventor isn't the best scientist we have, but it's his output that allows us to pay for the two hundred scientists!"
And how does this relate to comics, well, this is a case study, as it were, of the difference between the two concepts of clever and smart...

*bangs head against wall* Saw the recent Green Lantern post here. Was not impressed with the depiction of Fatality in it. Thought I'd post a comparison with the first issue of Green Lantern she showed up in.
