The God of Mischief Has Been Cast. (Non-Girl Loki News)
Greetings True Believers! Here is the actor that has been cast to play Loki in the upcoming Thor movie. He looks reasonable but I see Loki with dark hair. He'll need some hair color. What do you TB's think.

Also, I'm providing the link to the first Sherlock Holmes trailer. Robert Downey Jr. is Holmes and Jude Law is Watson. I'm conflicted, the film looks entertaining but....it doesn't seem like Holmes. I'll be interested to see the comments on it.

Enjoy!

If I can convince myself that it's an AU (which is...probably unlikely) Holmes might be fun. But convincing myself will probably be difficult, as I really like Holmes quite a bit.

The way I've accepted it is assuming it's an AU version of Holmes which takes place in the same universe as Young Sherlock Holmes.

By the way, loving the icon. Well played, sir.

This isn't Holmes, it's "Wild, Wild, West goes to London", and the crappy Will Smith version at that.

*pouts* I LIKED 'Wild, Wild West', and I seem to be the only one who did, too. Sure, it was far from a masterpiece of modern cinema, but it was FUN - it had Kevin Kline and a GIANT ROBOTIC SPIDER! What's wrong with that?

Honestly, the Holmes movie looks a bit rubbish, but that's the utterly crazed fangirl in me. (I think it's the fact that Holmes is looking at that lady all lasciviously, but the real Holmes is damn near asexual. And that Mr Downey's portrayal seems to be too energetic and enthusiastic, while I'm used to seeing a somewhat more reserved, though still a bit sarcastic-ish, Holmes.)

Being a crazed fangirl, though, I'll probably go see it anyway, even if it does turn out to be rubbish. Because I love Sherlock Holmes, and I love movies of questionable quality. Either way, I can't lose!

Motto.

Basil Rathbone spoiled Holmes for me.

I'm afraid my Holmes was Jeremy Brett, but I do know what you mean.

Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone are both my favorite Holmes. They frequently fight for number one. X3 But yes.

Rathbone was the one I grew up with, and though the stories were frequently poor, he was magnificent as Holmes; intense, irascible, but quite brilliant and underneath it all, at some level, compassionate. Nigel Bruce was TOO much of a bumbler compared to the books, but he worked as a foil for Rathbone for the length of a movie.

They made me want to read the books.

Then when I was older and I HAS read the books, we had the sublime Jeremy Brett as Holmes, and he simply WAS Holmes... with all the fascinating flaws that even Rathbone wasn't allowed to get away with. And Edward Hardwicke as a suitably implacable Watson, nobody's fool, and intelligent by any ordianry measure, but completely outclassed by Holmes in terms of reasoning.

It was a great era for detective TV fiction - Brett as Holmes, Joan Hickson as Miss Marple (We will not speak of the more recent Geraldine McEwan Miss Marple out of respect for Ms McEwen's other sterling work) and David Suchet as Poirot (Thankfully we still have Suchet, and more of his Poirot to come!)

*thumbs-up* Hardwicke is my favorite Watson, by the way, simply because he wasn't portrayed as an idiot. That's the mistake that a lot of Holmes adaptations make. Sure, he's not as smart as Holmes himself, but nobody is, except Mycroft Holmes.

They're re-airing the old Brett series on my local PBS station and it fills me with so much squee. ♥

I agree with Jeremy Brett. In fact, that is the only Holmes I know.

From the trailer alone, I am prepared to hate the Holmes movie with the power of a million exploding suns.

Can I just say that the Loki guy looks perfect?

I'm still a mite iffy about the casting for Thor himself, but otherwise I'm pretty confident about the way things are shaping up.

I can't escape the feeling that Kenneth Brannagh is kinda slumming, though.

Aw, Brannagh's stuff is rarely meant to be high-brow; the glory of his Shakespeare movies is that he manages to find the populist heart of the story and bring it out, without having to modernize the dialogue.

What I'm concerned about is... I do love him, but he's never been an action directior. The action bits of Dead Again, such as they were, were downright clunky and stagy, and his other stuff, not much better.

Huh. That's a good point.

Wish I had Much Ado About Nothing on DVD right now.

I can totally see the guy from the first link as Loki. Most definitely.

Now, as for Sherlock Holmes... Holmes is supposed to be damn near asexual, and rather more reservedly sarcastic than portrayed in the trailer. Robert Downy Jr. seems to be well-suited to the eccentric portion, though. Well, this will be a somewhat different Holmes than most are used to, I'm sure, but I'm willing to give it a shot as an AU version, I think. I'm going to reserve judgement for the moment, but I'm hopeful.

Meh. I've already ranted elsewhere about the Holmes movie, so I'll keep it short and just say: I'm viewing it as an AU, so I'm fine.

They might go for the Walt Simonson era little rectangular winglets instead of the horns-and-ponytail look.

While I'm sure that Robert Downey Jr. will do a superb job as Holmes - he's got the voice down pat, if nothing else; that is a COOL Holmes voice - he just doesn't LOOK enough like Holmes to be convincing in the role. My picture of Sherlock Holmes is of someone rather thin and severe-looking, with a beaky nose and intensely thoughtful eyes. He should look like someone who, with a single raised eyebrow, can make you feel like you've just incriminated yourself somehow even if you are not, in fact, a criminal. RDJ does NOT look like that, and nothing you do to him will MAKE him look like that.
That being said, I'm still going to see the film. It may or may not be a good Holmes film, but I'm sure it'll be enjoyable either way.
Oh, and the Loki guy looks like pretty good casting. It remains to be seen just how good of a job he'll do, but those Shakespearians know their stuff.

... Slow motion in a Sherlock Holmes movie?

It seems more ACTION HERO FIGHTFIGHTFIGHT Holmes. Not to say that he didn't occasionally get an action scene. But that was occasionally.

But they seem kinda gay and surprisingly I kinda like it. Usually I'm anti-Holmes/Watson.
