Aetheric Mechanics
Title: Aetheric Mechanics (Avatar Press, 2008, 46 pages)
Creators: Warren Ellis (writer), Gianluca Pagliarani (pencils)
Availability: In print.

A Sherlock Holmes pastiche as written by Warren Ellis. When I first posted this back at the old comm, I described it as "what awesome will be once it grows hair on its chest and finds the confidence to talk to girls". I stand by this opinion.

1907. London, England. Our POV character, Dr. Richard Watcham, returns home from the Ruritanian War...

...and meets up with a familiar face, currently working to puzzle out the mystery of "The Man Who Wasn't There" (but who is doing a good job of knifing scientists nonetheless).

In case you're not interested yet, here are some out-of-context scans of other fine pages.

It's not what you think.

Anyway -- good book. Lots of fun. Deserves your money.

I think it's suspiciously similar to something we saw over Christmas...

I could have lived without the Cyber Iron Giant, and traded it in for a few steampunk repaired Cybermen instead!

Actually, that ship-robot reminds me of the end-ish boss from Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner.

I prefer Poirot myself. At least he uses a jetpack.

Surely you jest... Poiroit would NEVER risk the headwind unsettling his perfectly waxed moustache (or worse yet, insects being caught in them) or scuffing his shoes when he landed.

Miss Marple on the other hand!

She only ever uses that thing to please whichever niece or nephew gave it to her.

As I said when this was posted on the other comm:

First, that's a marvelous description by the Navy man.

Second, "world's most objectionable goldfish." Hee.

Last, good show Watcham. Holmes Raker does occasionally need to be reminded that the rest of mankind was not put on this Earth to marvel at his cleverness.

Pick this up, ladies and gents. Had one of the best endings I've seen in years.

I thought those were supposed to be the Niagra Falls.

I dunno. I read the complete Holmes when I was a child, and I really had enough of his eternal unchangingness.

Give it a try. "Unchanging" is something the ersatz Holmes here is NOT.

Looks like one more thing to grab for my next trip to the 'local' comic shop.
