I'm sorry, but that last page is just...

*headdesk*

Before that page, the entire issue Tasted Like Diabetes, but that just pushed it way over the top. Having Starman actually there? Sure, why not? The rest of them? Ah... no.

Yeah, I definitely flipped past that page, flipped back, and said, "wait. That was canon? That actually happened, it wasn't just Court picturing what would happen if she said yes so she could dismiss it on the next page?"

And then I facepalmed. Story where nothing happens except nifty character interaction and Court's birthday? Sure! GREAT! Seriously, I love that idea. Story where everything is inexplicable, juvenile fapping over the "big happy family" concept in ways that do not even make sense? Seriously Johns, way to go out on a weak note. (The whole "everybody make a big deal about the braces," for example, would make a lot more sense if she'd mentioned them even once, ever, in the entire history of the last two volumes of JSA.)

I like this issue - It's a bit of a change from the norm, and I love the punchline of that final page.

That said, the panel of Courtney blowing her candles out is the single-most terrifying thing I've seen this year, and I made the mistake of going to see Wolverine, yesterday.

I never thought about it until you said it, but Motto on the Birthday Surprise. I just read Green Lantern: Rebirth, so now I keep expecting the next panel to be her opening up even ... wider ... and IT'S PARALLAX OH GOD WHY DOES IT HAVE AN EXTRA ROW OF TEETH ICK ICK ICK

Yeah, that panel will haunt me tonight. It's like Abra Kadabra decided to pop in and temporarily turn Courtney into a doll. The creepy kind that lonely Japanese men like to marry..

Terrifying? Ugh to me it looked like such a porn face it was as if Greg Land drew it.

You'd think remedial dentistry would be a heck of a lot more common in their line of work. Especially Ted.

I don't think having animals and ice-cream at the dentist is entirely sanitary

... and then the monkey threw poo all over the sterilized dentist equipment.

I kind of like the JSA being all after school special wholesome and whitebread every now and then, but this is seriously pushing it.
It's like Stepford Wives, but with super powers.

Where's Patricia?

Also, on another note, that last scene could have been funny if it were the team watching via one of Terrific's T-spheres on a monitor. Then you get the same "everyone cares about Courtney" without the "every villain in the world knows Stargirl's dentist" aspect. Plus...plus! You want to make it funny, split the page in half. Top half:

PANEL 1:

[COURTNEY is sitting in the dentist chair, being worked on by her dentist.]

COURTNEY: I'M GLAD THEY WERE KIDDING. CAN YOU IMAGINE...

PANEL 2:

[COURTNEY is on a monitor at JSA headquarters. THE TEAM is sitting around the monitor watching a POV just outside a window.]

COURTNEY: ...EVERYONE WATCHING ME GET THESE OFF?

But no...we can't acknowledge heroes have access to high technology and act with discretion. No, no. That would be wrong. Instead, we get: HEE HAW! HEE HAW!

I hope the monkey taks a giant crap in her mouth.

It's fun, people. Sheesh.

The Marvel Adventures has pulled stuff like this all the time, and we've loved them for it.

Yeah, I'm thinking if something like this had appeared in Tiny Titans or the Superfriends comic, people would be swallowing it up.

I think the problem is the cognitive dissonance of this kind of scene coming right after the last few issues, which were most certainly not Marvel Adventures grade material (in terms of lighthearted adventures). That final scene would fit in a Marvel Adventures book, in fact I can easily see Ben, Reed, and Johnny crowded around a dentist working on Sue's teeth.

I dislike that last scene for the main reason I stated: it completely destroys any future pretense of Stargirl maintaining a secret identity. The dentist will blog about it, people in the waiting room probably took pictures with their cameras, and I'm not even going to address the issues that arise because of the two animals in there. This scene...if we're to take JSA as a serious book, which I've assumed to this point because of the various tie-ins...paints a target on the entire Whitmore family in a way without parallel.

Not that it matters, since I don't read JSA. This post is mostly to defend any potential attack on the Marvel Adventure books.

That was hilarious.

(The pervy end of my brain thinks either we find out that everyone has a dentist fetish *or* everyone has been waiting for oral, but the thought of braces put them off?)

I'm a bad man. ^_^*

Part of me says, "Don't chew Johns to shreds over this, given that Stargirl's his way of paying homage to his dead little sister.

Part of me says, "If it meant we were going to get stuck with bad writing like this, I really wish he'd found another way to remember his sister."

Maybe DC should cough up and get Johns some therapy? It doesn't seem like he's dealt with his grief very well.

The whole issue hearkens back to the JSA issue where they had Thanksgiving Dinner with the JLA. And that's a good thing.

Seriously, after the trainwreck that was One Nation Under Gog and the annoying Black Adam and Isis story, it was good to see the JSA acting like a family again. They need more stories like that, even if the dentist scene is a bit ridiculous.

And c'mon, Starman was great in this issue.
