Preview of Captain America #49

After the 6-issue sojourn to China, we catch up with everyone's favourite Manchurian candidate, Sharon Carter, and her retconned-aunt (used-to-be-sister) Peggy. They have a lot in common, starting with both having fucked Steve.

Now, when Sharon first showed up in the mid-1960s, she was said to be the younger sister of Margaret Carter, a love interest Steve had in World War II; now, this was perhaps on the outer limits of what fertility would have allowed, but not impossible (my father has twelve siblings, born between 1940 and 1961; if Sharon was born around 1940, that would fit).

Obviously, this was not a backstory that could easily withstand much of the 'ol sliding timeline. Peggy appeared a few times in the 60s and 70s, but afterwards the comics started to ignore her because of the problem she presented.

Anyway, Ed Brubaker finally pushed her off the sliding timeline in Captain America (v.5) #25:

This essentially invalidated all of her appearances in the "present-day" period, while preserving her place in World War II and in Sharon's family history (which, really, was the more important thing). Though even "aunt" is kind of stretching it; I imagine they'll be calling her "great-aunt" in another twenty years.  I've never been quite sure what I think about the idea that Steve's present-day girlfriend is related to his World War II girlfriend (and, particularly, that the latter grew up hearing all about him from her sister/aunt).  It's a bit "small world", and it can be a bit creepy ("Farewell, sweet Margaret.  Make sure your brother marries well!").

Anyway, the preview for #49 contains her first post-retcon appearance. And this is apparently going to be the most talked-about issue since #25.

I'm glad we're getting back to Sharon's story; I've missed her in the book since #42 (same with Falcon); also, little defensive about the 'as a friend' thing, Sharon?

It would be really cool if Sharon and Sam started dating.

As far as the timeline goes, it will probably get easier as time goes on, actually. Peggy doesn't really need to stay alive, and the more "great"s you add to her relation to Sharon, the more it becomes a 'family legend' or 'funny coincidence'.

I do love Sharon Carter, and Brubaker is taking her to really interesting places!

I'm tired of hearing about WWII. I want to hear about WWI.

I have a hankering for the Philipine-American War myself! It had coked up crazy Muslim rebels who wouldn't fall down when shot multiple times (which is why the .45 was developed--stopping power is important)!

I never liked the idea of the Peggy-Cap-Sharon thing. Your woman now too old for ya? She has a sister! They are all the same!

Was Sharon always a member of SHIELD? Or was that just added in with feminism? Either way, if Sharon is a member of SHIELD, they can meet through that, and she's not related to Peggy. Otherwise, isn't it a bit strange for Peggy that her former love is married to a younger family member? Separate the Margaret and Sharon characters. Make Margaret a minor passing by character who is the niece of Peggy who also has a crush on cap, and have her narrate Peggy watching the news reels. Make Sharon's connection to Cap as a SHIELD one.

Sharon has been a SHIELD agent since her first appearance in 1965. Actually, for a while, Cap only knew her as "Agent 13", because Nick Fury refused to allow Sharon permission to divulge her real name (because Cap is a security risk or whatever, I guess; dramatic contrivance). He only found out she was related to his old girlfriend after he fell in love with her.

Yeah, the SHIELD agent bit's always been there. When feminism came along, though, that's when we got the "Femme Force", a whole team of female SHIELD agents! Which lasted like, one issue.

From the time I first started reading Captain America in the mid-80s (during Mark Guenwald's legendary run), Sharon Carter has always been my favorite Cap "love interest" character. Even though she was dead at the time, and Cap was with Bernie Rosenthal in my earliest memories and soon to be hooked up with Diamondback with no hope in sight for a reunion with Sharon, I always hoped that somehow she'd come back and they'd get back together.

I love that Brubaker has brought her back front and center, I love how strong and yet human he's shown her to be, and I love how prominent he's made their pairing. She's not just another girlfriend, she's a central part of the Cap mythos now. And I could not be happier.

It would be fucked up if it were revealed that Peggy actually got preggers and gave birth to Sharon, who was then pretended to be her brother's daughter in order to avoid public shame.

Bonus if American Dream in the Spidergirl universe were Sharon and Steve's sekrit daughter!

Isn't naming her Shannon Carter pretty much a giveaway?
