Migration Timeline
By now you will have (we hope) heard that Scans Daily IJ will be taking up residence at DreamWidth. This will be the community's permanent home. Reasons for the move are outline in previous mod posts, available here and here. Outlined below is our rough timeline for the migration. We've built in some buffer time, in case comments or entries go astray during import.

1. Mods post a link to the invite code generator. Today.

Existing members should be able to see the post under the mod tag on both comms. New members, please email us at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com. Don't request a code at SD_Invite - we're saving those codes for after the migration.

2. Members use the invite code generator to create a DreamWidth account. Throughout the week.

Early birds, please take advantage of all of DW's excellent FAQs, to play around with your account's options, and to make yourself aware of LJ -> DW code changes. When Scans Daily DW is opened, we will be posting links to DW FAQs, all of our old FAQs and some new ones being written by mods and volunteers.

3. Scans Daily IJ is closed. Late night Saturday.

After Scans Daily IJ has been closed, a memorial post will go up, directing people to our new digs at DW, and celebrating our time on IJ. You will still be able to comment on old entries, but posting access will be limited to mods.

4. ScansDaily DW is opened. Mid day Sunday. Monday at the lastest.

Posting access will be granted to all members, as soon as we've ensured that the import has gone through without issue.

That means that yes, there will be a period of downtime while we import all the bajillion entries and comments from IJ to DW. We will have a moving day party post in NoScans, to tide us over.

Miscellaneous

- The icon space at DW has been upped to 15 for free accounts.

- The invite code system is currently under discussion. There is a possibility that the site will eventually do away with it. This will not affect migration, but is of interest to some members.

- DW is working on a fix that will allow open-id owners to edit imported posts and comments.

- We are still looking to put together a Delicious Tag Archive, in order to protect our entries from tag vandalism, and to archive more detailed metadata than journal-site tags are able to. If you'd like to help us get this project off the ground, please join SD_Volunteers.

No. Dreamwidth is the comm's official backup, especially now that we know we can back up comments. A few people have asked if they could take over modship of the IJ comm when we move (for a few different reasons) and the modteam agreed that we will not be adding new maintainers to IJ.

You just didn't learn anything from LJ scuttling SD did you? Has anyone even used ljArchive to make a backup of this SD?

A different program, but yes, there is a backup of this comm saved externally. When it's imported to Dreamwidth, the entries will be reproduced there and remain here. So if this comm gets nuked in the future, the entries will still be on Dreamwidth. If Dreamwidth gets nuked, they'll still be here. And if both get nuked, there's an external backup. Although, the more backups people make, the merrier, of course.

That's not how backups work. After Sunday, when people start posting to DW, IJ will no longer be a viable backup for SD, because it won't have all the same posts as the DW version. It's the same problem that happened last time, SD (thankfully) had a backup but it was months out of date.

(The only reason I asked for mod access here on IJ was I figured I had more of a chance to get mod access on the defunct community than the new one. The gap I mentioned above would still exist, but it would at least give me a chance to make and share that backup like I did the SD 1.0 backup.)

I'm not sure I follow you clearly then. Dreamwidth will have all the posts this community does when the import is done. Once Dreamwidth Scans_Daily is opened for posting then we'll be making regular backups of that comm, complete with the imported entries, in addition to an external backup of this comm. This community will continue to exist, so I'm not sure I see the benefit of having a third version of the Insanejournal SD posts online. Unless I'm missing something?

Let me see if I can say this a bit clearer.

I asked for mod access to this SD (hence referred as SD 2.0) after it was locked down so I could make a backup. I wanted a backup of SD 2.0 for two reasons: (1) so I could post it online for anyone else who'd want a copy; (2) so I could work on integrating the SD 2.0 posts, tags, comments, etc. with the SD 1.0 archive, putting them all into a searchable Wordpress blog.

The reasons I asked for mod access on SD 2.0 are: (1) so I can make the backup without having to trouble any of the mods while they're moving and (2) because I didn't want to presume to ask for mod status over on DW. Since I wasn't going to change anything, I thought, as an SD Volunteer with a history of trying to help archive the community, getting mod access to a shuttered SD 2.0 wouldn't be a problem.

There's no long-term benefit to a third version of putting the SD 2.0 archives online, but in the short-term it's an easy way for you mods to give me access to all the posts, comments, and tags to work on backing up, until the time someone sends me a copy of the backup.
