First Wave

This is taken from the Source.

Not much info is given, but I assume this is an alternate Earth story where it is still the Golden Age. Doc Savage, the Spirit, and a golden age style Batman seem to be the main cast.

Bat before the dickery, I suppose?

Wasn't Golden Age Bats at the height of his dickery though?

Aside from using guns he was the one who would kick criminals into thousand foot falls into the ocean because as criminals they weren't to be treated like people.

I'm bummed because I though the Crimson Avenger was going to be part of the First Wave. THAT I would read SOOOO hard.

Golden Age Bats also clubbed people using other people.

That's not dickery. That's awesome.

Only launching polar bears at the enemy is more awesome.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; Aquaman did that. THAT'S RIGHT! AQUAMAN IS MORE AWESOME THAN BATMAN!

I think there are more characters who are a part of this.

The characters mentioned so far are Doc Savage, Spirit, Batman and The Avenger (not the Crimson Avenger, a pulp character I believe)

Ah, OK. No idea Batdickery is historic.

If anything he's become less of a dick over the years.

Considering the author, considering he's little better than a cut-rate Frank Miller, I'm as far from "in" as possible. The fact that he seems to think that Doc Savage means "watching the poor suffer" says it all.

Actually it's been stated many a time that Doc Savage is this world's Superman ish figure thus why he's the biggest hero of this Earth, so he'll be very heroic and for the people, presumably. Batman on the other hand...well...

Don't care. Not reading. And ordinarily, I'd kill for a Doc Savage ongoing.

...Okay, incorrect "cut-rate Frank Miller" comment aside, nothing in that preview puts Savag in the "watching the poor suffer." I think that the writing here, the Batman description aside, is just describing the world that these characters inhabit, not who these characters are.

Yeah, I'd agree. It's misreading the blurb to think that "watching the poor suffer" refers to Doc. He funded more charities and free clinics and soup kitchens than all the other super-heroes put together. I wouldn't let that misinterpretation of a caption put me off this series.

cut-rate Frank Miller

Could Frank Miller have produced anything like Architecture and Mortality?

Considering your 'cut-rate Frank Miller' comment, I'm as far from listening to you as possible.

Azzarello's like the medium's Ellroy, he's absolutely fantastic when it comes to crime fiction, and whilst his Batman run was a little subdued, and his Superman garbage, I'm definitely on board.

Quite so. The head honchos put the kibosh on Batman killing shortly after Robin arrived on the scene. Batman was ready to kill for only about a year of the "Golden Age."

I'm not sure how well the Spirit fits into Azzarello's noirish vision. Maybe as the comic relief? He is generally a pretty happy-go-lucky character, and the last time someone played him absolutely straight was, well, the Spirit movie.

The interesting thing about the Spirit, though, is that, while he himself is a fairly lighthearted guy, he lives and operates in a very dark, film-noirish world. As such, I would think he'd fit in perfectly.

I really enjoyed both Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and the Joker GN so this sounds interesting.
Then again, maybe I'm just a Brian Azzarello fan.

It's not impossible, is it? I mean, King Features does license the character to different comics publishers (including DC in the past). Maybe Lee Falk didn't agree to crossovers, but he passed away some time ago.

OK, I am officially interested now. I'm a sucker for the Golden Age. Give me a world where men still wear fedoras and women sing in nightclubs wearing slinky dresses, a world where cops have Irish accents and every mob boss is based on either Cagney or Edward G. Robinson, a world with kid sidekicks and cab drivers wearing derby hats and fiendish, cackling villains - give me such a world, I say, and I am a happy camper. I'm looking forward to this.
